Remember to put red 262 loctite on the main shaft and compensator nuts during reassembly.

your video's are great. they are easy to see and understand. unfortunatly my scooter was under water during hurricane sandy. i am in the process of rebuuilding it. i've been a mechanic for some years but not on motorcycles. it is a bit different. i wish you were here in jersey so i could tap your mind and get all my questions answered. thanks again for your help! george

Thanks for the tip! I tried one notch lower and thought it too loose, even cold. Perhaps I should install an aftermarket auto tensioner? Have to take it all down to do the belt next!

Hey, I'm just a backyard wrench when it comes to the bike. I spent 35 years turning wrenches, first on bikes and then on cars. Got a question? Send it on! I'll do what I can.

I have a small center lift that keeps the bike level and stable. My current storage for the Softtail doesn't have enough room for a full-size one...yet!

Here we are in 2018 with Harley Davidson now having a new updated motor from top to bottom and I want to know this: Why is Harley-Davidson still using a chain primary drive? A gear drive primary system is smoother and less maintenance all around eliminating tentioners etc etc. Harley-Davidson could use a gear drive primary and use the current primary cover for traditional appearance.

I think the chain was a tad tight, would have brought it down just to the next notch. Remember it a cold bike so we favor the loser setting of 7/8". Just my 2cents LOL

You never showed how to get off the front sprocket.. what size wrench is that ? I can't break it loose with channel locks..

4:38 over torquing!

Michael Byrnes Good eye! The torque wrench I was using didn't go high enough to meet the front torque spec., so I did "cheat" a bit. Later, I found out a neighbor (who is also into maintaining his own bikes) had a higher range torque wrench I could use to redo the tightening sequence.

Also what is the torque ? And what do you consider critical fasteners for the red loctite ? Just the main bolts ?
@MrChopemup

Rich Delano torque is 160 . But you can go up to over 250 . Old shovels 400!

no Loctite wrong

You never showed how to get off the front sprocket ? That is a bitch to get off .. can't get it with a big channel lock wrench.. what size socket is that ? And is it also righty loosey like the back ? Or would a regular wrench be better ? Don't have an impact

Sorry Rich. There is a special tool that essentially locks the two sprockets against one another. They are model specific so make sure you get the right one for your bike. This is the tool for the FXSTC: www.jpcycles.com/product/911-640 With the sprockets locked, you can use a long handled ratchet or breaker bar to break the nut loose. Don't recall offhand if it is reverse thread or not.
