Yes, the 5 digit is beautiful. I’m not sure why they ever changed it. Thanks for the comment. If you enjoy the content, I’d really appreciate it if you subscribed to our channel!
There is also the 14060M, which in its early stages of production, was not COSC certified, so it was still a 2-liner. When comparing the 14060M with the newer 114060, the only differences are physical differences, because they both have the same 3130 movement. Not exactly sure which one to choose, but it comes down to the dial simplicity and finer case aesthetic of the 14060M vs the sturdier, more resistant construction of the case, bracelet, bezel, the 4 lines of text, and the larger hour markers and hands of the 114060.
Yes, this is really the only debate. I think if you're just concerned over the aesthetics, then I think the old 14060 is the watch to get, it looks vintage while giving you the 'newer' movement that doesn't make it feel like you're compromising. But I got the 114060 because I wear that watch almost as my beater, so the tougher qualities (ceramic bezel, bigger more robust bracelet) comes in handy. I probably shouldn't wear it like that given the value and the way the grey market is going about pricing out these watches... but I have 2 other watches that I rarely wear and so the 114060 becomes 'the watch' for me. In any case, best advice I can give, is just wear it... that watch was made to be a tool and it's an awesome look either way you go.
This is my first automatic watch and I absolutely love it despite the negative reviews rolex seems to get. I think the weight on this watch is perfectly heavy and I love the metal band! Overall great buy!
Great video and of course beautiful time pieces. However I mostly prefer the 14060 because its size and history. Aren’t we all somehow attracted to submarine particularly when seeing this model in movies or on celebrities :) If someone offers me this two watch with unworn condition and same price, I would definitely prefer the 14060. Thanks for the video again.
As a person who prefers "tool" watches, the Sub (no date) is the standard. I would suggest to review ones' daily activities, and to review the current watch one has on. If it is banged up and you want the Sub, get the 14060. Replacement costs for the aluminum bezel are far cheaper than the ceramic. I prefer NATO straps so would replace the Rolex bracelet, keeping the bracelet clean for those special occasions, only. Happy Holidays!
I prefer my 5-digit. 14060m Modified with the 3130. And the case size along with thickness holds back to the past Rolex and close as you can get to modern specs with some of that 5513 ilk.
You are right! Whether the SD or the submariners: Ceramic VS Pre-ceramic, they feel and wear totally different. One is a "vintage looking piece" and the other is a modern Rolex. Wether ceramic or pre-ceramic, just gorgeous looking watches!
I still prefer the older model. The lugs and crown guards seem much too heavy for the rest of the watch. I've had a 16610 for 25 years, diving all over the world and it's still going strong. I know it's fashionable to bash the date but when I bought mine they couldn't give the 14060 away. :)
I had it serviced at the shop I bought it in. About 10 years ago. Since then, I've gotten into watchmaking and have been servicing my own watches. It can be a challenge finding genuine parts as the major watch manufacturers control it with an iron fist. Also, don't get me wrong the new watch's bracelet is head and shoulders above the old. I'm not so sure about the ceramic bezel, we'll have to see how that holds up with time.
114060 is the better overall watch for the money. larger body = more metal. I wear it daily and it’s comfortable and still has a classic size. Mechanicly perfect. Both models are surely great watches.
It’s hard to argue the other position! 114060 is solid. I would have like to see the new sub carry the traditional dimensions but they didn’t ask me! Thanks for the comment David. Please subscribe!
A single service cost will be $900+ ... so, they really would be the same price (if purchasing 14060 for $1,000 less plus service). That makes it a no brainer between the two ... the 114060 has a better movement, 10 year service period, better bracelet, better bezel, better dial, better case, and better clasp.
It's really crazy. From a spec standpoint, there's no contest between the two...for essentially the same cost. There is something special about the "vintage" aspects. I really wish there was a modern version (ceramic), new bracelet, but with the older proportions. Maybe one day.
there is nothing special in what they did. what is special to me is that how rolex can fuck over many people but people still play their game LOL. they jacked up the price of their sport models every year and play with supply. Oh dear. i used to like rolex and their offerings, but now i just cant justify of how much they are charging for sport rolex. in some areas, i heard they also started to implement some ridiculous rules like you cant have your warranty card or sth. they originally wanted to charge my dad for 700 USD extra for replacing the dial etc and being sneaky. i was so shocked when they asked 1800 usd. Are you kidding me?? what you wanna do with a fucking datejust anyway? this is not even a complicated watch. and then they said Oh we wanna replace the dial, etc. I said , no thank you. dont touch the dial, JUST SERVICE THE DAMN WATCH!! they finally took away 700 usd and charged 1100 usd. i still feel that my dad was fucked. but what can we do? fuck rolex.
There's a reason why 5 digit Subs are often selling as much as or higher than the new C's. They just look and feel a thousand times better. I would not be at all surprised if Rolex reverts back to the classic proportions at some point, with all the mod cons.
I have the new date sub and I like it, and in comparison to my Explorer II 16570 it feels a lot more solid but a bit heavy on the wrist while the Explorer feels like its not even there. How do you compare both after a full day of wear on your wrist?
Hi like you I have a circa 1978 Rolex sub and a newish 114060, both are great watches with the older one probably my favourite due to owning 40 years. I am interested on your thoughts on whether you think your older one due to lower reflectivity or perhaps say less bling factor seems more black? My old one has a plexiglass crystal and aluminium bezel and the black just seems blacker on the bezel and the face of watch.
That's interesting, I've never really thought about it. Your 78 is obviously a lot different than the 14060 with sapphire. To me, the 14060 almost seems "flat black" when compared to the high gloss of the ceramic.
The older one is like a beautiful, slim mistress with a LOT of "history". The new one is like a fat, good and sensible wife who cooks good food. Seriously, it's not even funny how much better the old one looks.
Just bought the new no-date from the AD in Cozumel. It was $7,079, minus 1.5% cashback from my credit card rewards, and minus 8.9% from the tax refund for travelers by the Mexican government. I could not believe what a great deal I got.
Good question. I don’t think you would be able to flip flop the bands but i could be wrong. The lug width is the same but they fit so perfect, I’m not sure it would work. Why would you want to do that? Assuming you like the 5 digit watch head and 6 digit bracelet?
@@thecolumbiawatchsociety8836 well it’s more like me being concerned if an aftermarket Everest Rubber band from the older mode Rolex would fit the newer Rolex without any issues. Given that the bands are curved end rubber bands and claimed to fit very precisely.
@@boostlee876 ahh, i don’t know about Everest straps but they can definitely answer that question. I have a few Ribber B’s for my c sub and i know they advertise them as two different products. Thanks for the insightful questions. Please subscribe to the page if you enjoy watch content!
@@thecolumbiawatchsociety8836 thanks for the feedback. have you ever swapped rubber b bands between the subs?? If you ever did that would probably answer the question because I’d imagine rubber b and Everest would all have to conform to the same mounting point despite brand. Subbed!
I have the newer version with maxi-dial. However, I think I like the older version better. 😏 By the way, the newer model sells for around the 12k range in 2021 resale market. The model was discontinued in 2020.
I was a little bummed the new sub didn’t go back to its roots and use a smaller case! I have yet to see the new one bc they are getting gobbled up so fast!
With the current shortage, I had to prepay mine over a month ago. Still haven't gotten yet, but the next one that comes into our Rolex store is mine! :) great review. I really wanted to see a comparison to the older one. It's pretty drastic, they did away with all the gripes I had about the submariner with the new one (small size, and hollow, cheap feeling links).
Hey Albert! They are very hard to find new. You can find one but you going to have to get on a wait list for a while! I’m guessing 6 months minimum. Thanks the comment, if you enjoyed the content, please subscribe to the channel!
@@thecolumbiawatchsociety8836 I got lucky today. Called a AD in California and they had one in stock. Model 114060 in the Oystersteel. Picked it up a couple hours ago for $7900 plus tax.
Albert wow, you got lucky! I guess the lockdown is impacting the Rolex market. No chance this would occur right now on the right coast! Wear it in good health!
Which is more comfortable: The new one thanks to Glidelock or the old one thanks to its better proportions? I have a thin wrist. Could get the new one for USD 400 less than the old one. Brain says new one, heart says old one.
After all, I went for the new one. It is such a high quality watch (even the new Omega SMP300M does not come close to it) and I love the Glidelock. Also did not want to spend more for the older one. I am very happy with my purchase.
I should’ve watched this before getting my 14060 I’m returning now paying extra 3k bc the bracelet hollow links feels so cheap compared to modern ones. 6500 lol I’ll take 100 please what a difference 4 years can make.
You said it, man! I ended up selling the 14060 for probably half of what it would fetch today, but the 114060 just feels so much more substantial. I do have a 36MM explorer (solid end links - 114070) that I love. But the solid end links are key!
funny all the comments which is better, both are rolex, if ur old fashoned and like scratched things then buy yourself an old won, worn by some ppeople before you, if u want a new firsh crisp look that will age on you then get the new one is so easy
bambino bambini I’ve been wearing one for two years and would have to disagree. The ceramic is not as subdued as the 5 digit bezel but i wouldn’t classify it as reflective.
excelerater I’m really surprised your AD even has a new sports Rolex in stock. They are impossible to find around here and it’s driving preowned prices up.
I see what you mean, as I have the sub C/ND and a 16600 SD which is in a way comparable to your 14060 as they both feel vintagie with there alu bezel and narrower lugs, smaller hands and dial, and there rattle snake bracelet and crappy clasp... But I love and wear them both as they feel so different, since my SD is now on a vintage leather strap. Why don't you try to also wear your 14060 on a vintage leather strap? That way you would have 2 watches with totally different feeling. I really enjoy wearing, the modern Rolex on it solid end links bracelet with glide lock clasp and SD on a nice brown leather strap from Hirsh but Colored have nice ones too..
MrBusytimmy totally agree. I’d love to see a SubC with the original dimensions. I say the bracelet sucks but this guy is nearly 20 years old and still gets the job done ✅
It definitely appears Rolex made several improvements with the 114060. I especially like the ceramic bezel and platinum numbers filling on the bezel numbers. The platinum indices give it just the right amount of precious metals bling along with the white gold on the face.
Cy Yem a from the beginning, Rolex watches were made to be worn hard! A little clanging only build character and adds to the story that will told for generations to come! But to many, they are merely a very nice piece of jewelry that are meticulously protected which is awesome in its own right. Thanks for the comment! I bought my 14060m in 2007 and I bought my 114060 last week. These are the only 2 watches I have ever owned. And yes I am aware of people saying they are tool watches that were made to be used to hammer in nails and smooth out cement. But imo I think people have taken this too literally. They were always expensive watches from the beginning and people have always taken care of them...
