I take the Mannlicher 88/90 that I received from Royal Tiger Imports to the range. Knowing that the bore is in poor condition, how does it shoot?

Standard 8mm mauser bullets (projectile) work in the 8x50 mannlicher. Also, IMR 3031 works best. If youre using 7.62 Russian brass, you can use that load data for the 8x50 Mannlicher. PPU makes projectiles in .323" and i have found that PPU males a bullet that is .330" and it works very well. Those bullets are FMJ, but sometimes you can find jacketed soft points for hunting. One last thing. The 8x50 Mannlicher was originally a black powder cartridge so, you can use a case full of pyrodex and have an accurate cartridge. You can buy the reloading die set from R&D tool and die.

Thanks for the info! I did have some success with .330 fmj bullets in my Mannlicher 95, I wonder how they'd work in the 88/90

They work very well in my 88/90. The reloading die set from R&D tool and die iis made to crimp the .323" bullet that is used for the 8mm Mauser. If you use the .330" bullet you will be able to seat it but not crimp it. Because 7.62 Russian brass is used for the 8x50 Mannlicher, you can use load data for the 7.62 Russian in the 8x50 Mannlicher. Just make sure to use starting loads and the right weight bullet. The recoil should be comparable to a modern 30-30 Winchester. You get the velocity up, and your bullets will stop tumbling. The .330" bullet will also clean out alot of the rust and pitting inside the barrel. You wanr the bullet to be seated out as far as possible. So i dont use the crimp groove when making those rounds.

@@blueduck9409 Do you have any trouble seating the .330 bullets? I have an RCBS 8x50 die set and it has a .323 expander. Do you crimp these rounds? because my die set does not crimp.

Man! It would be so nice if someone made a new barrel liner for these nice firearms! A fine way to preserve the look of the rifle while improving its accuracy.

I'm looking at getting one from RTI as a project, and looking at the patent diagrams, I think it'd be fairly easy to rebarrel. Since the locking is done at the rear of the action, it looks like it's just a slightly coned breech. If I end up rebarreling one, I'll make a video. I don't think I'd be able to find/make an 8x50 chamber reamer, so I'll have to figure out a similar cartridge.

I watched this series when you posted it earlier this year and I remember how bummed I was to learn that the barrel didn't work out for you. Can't think of why it didn't occur to me earlier but, if you still own it, perhaps you could convert it to a smoothbore musket/shotgun? Similar to what India did with their old Lee-Enfields. Either way hope you're having a good one buddy😊

I finally got a decent 1888/90 but there is a dent in the barrel. About 1mm deep and 4-5mm in diameter. Is that toast? I can't tell whether the inside of the bore is bulged inwards or not.

It's probably fine. 1mm isn't very deep at all. I'd run a snug fitting patch down the bore. You'd be able to feel any irregularities but I'd really doubt there are any.

If you do end up getting one of these or a 8x56 that has rifling left (won't help this one of course), and it's not shooting up to your expectations, you might polish a couple thousandths out of your Lee sizer. Lee should have made the sizer for these at .330 or more in my opinion. I have 4 M95 carbines in 8x56r and they all have great bores, having said that the tightest one slugs at .330 so .329 for a cast bullet is really small even for one of these (diameter) rifles with a nice bore (based on the several I have owned and friends/family have owned, maybe 8x50 rifles were a bit tighter or I just happen to only have experience with ones on the larger end). I used a dowel rod with a strip of sandpaper curled around it and chucked that in a drill, of course a mill or lathe would be more ideal but I don't have either (yet!). Or you can check NOE, I think they make push through sizers over .329. I bought the Lee ,338 Lapua mold and size them down to shoot in my 8x56r rifles. Works well. The Lee mold for this caliber doesn't drop them quite fat enough for my rifles. Have you tried any shotgun or pistol powders for cast rifle bullets? I've used Unique with good results, but 2400 is my favorite. Starting with about 16gr of 2400 for this caliber would be about right, and if the case doesn't seal you can bump up to about 20 in increments. If still no seal, I swap to Reloader 7 and try that. If you haven't read it, the article called "cast bullets in military rifles" is a good guide and there's several other powders such as Red Dot that work well. Almost all my milsurp rifles I load cast with 2400 except a few, such as the 8x56r that gives me sooty cases at max 2400 level due to not sealing all the way with 2400 (not dangerous, just annoying) so I use Reloader 7 in those. With the crazy cost of powder, you can shoot more for less with the faster powders and it's perfectly safe. The Lyman cast bullet handbook has published loads for these powders as well. Nice vid, Im not trying to sound like a know-it-all so hope I don't come off that way.
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
Great comment. I have tried 13gr of red dot, "the load" and it works well, just not in these rifles yet. I actually just had some blow back using it in my Gew 88 so I'll keep an eye out for Reloader 7. My Gew 88 has the early bolt without the gas deflector on the cocking piece so it wasn't too pleasant. I have a few Lee sizers where I've honed them out, notably .325 for 8x57. I need to get another one in .329 before I modify the one that I have since I've been sizing .338 FMJ bullets down to .329 and they shot really nicely in my M95. Others have commented that FMJ's might be better than cast for these corroded bores and my early tests are showing that to be true.
@Toolness1
@Toolness1 Год назад
@@rakumprojects Nice, yeah the 8mm Lee sizer in exactly .323 is too small for most of my 8mm Mauser rifles. I noticed watching more vids you have the tools to easily hone them out so that's awesome. I don't so I switched to the NOE system for the most part, if you haven't seen it, it's just a push thru die with bushings you change out for different sizes and they offer a nice range for each caliber. Cheaper and easier than buying the Lee dies. IMR 4895 is also real good for the same range as Reloader 7 for those cases that don't wanna seal with the faster powders, but IMR powders have really been hard to find and expensive. That's a real nice bore on the M95 if it likes .329's. I tried that diameter in cast when I first got my M95 carbines and then spent a ridiculous amount of time removing lead, it was bad even with powder coat and a gas check. I just got some PPU .330 jacketed bullets to try. Hornady used to make them as well but looks like they may have discontinued them. I have quite a few still, they shoot nice.
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
@@Toolness1 If you have a decent press and a solid bench it's not too bad resizing .338 FMJ's if you run out of .330 FMJ's. I've read some people suggest doing it in multiple passes but it worked well enough for me doing it in just one go. IMR powders are easier for me to find. I do need to restock 4895, it's a great universal powder for milsurp rifles.
@Toolness1
@Toolness1 Год назад
@@rakumprojects Cool, I am glad to hear that works. I had read you may have to worry about the jacket separating and I guess that kept me from trying. Sizing down jacketed bullets would be handy to make .300 bullets for the 7.35 Carcano as well.

What would you recommend, I’m gonna get an 1888/90 for my ww1 impression and I’m sure it will have a bad bore. Once I fix it up like you did would you recommend black powder and constant cleaning for usage or to follow the amount of grams You used with smokeless?.
@rakumprojects

I think either would be good. Black powder is very hard to over-charge but if you keep your smokeless loads light you should be good as well. I don't have any experience loading black powder since I haven't been able to find any locally but I want to give it a shot eventually.

Just as a safety warning. Loading cases with a charge of powder below the minimum from your reloading manual can be very dangerous. If you want a safe soft shooting round then go with trail boss powder and fill your case and use lead bullets. I've used this technique with 6.5 carcano and the vetterli with great success.
