This is what happens if you don't oil an original.
This poor thing was installed, ran for a few years and never oiled. As you can see it barely runs and the bearings squeak. I later tore this fan down, and deemed it a total loss, even though the finish is mint, it is nothing but a parts fan due to the main bearing having almost 1/4" of play in it. I bet whoever installed the fan wondered what the little tube of oil was for.. Sigh.

*Love it! Keeps the room very **Fastly.Cool** . The manual states it comes with a year warranty and 5 year part replacement. The compressor makes the typical sound...small price to pay for AC.*

Wow. I didn't know these needed to be oiled. I used to have these in my old house and they all sounded horrible and I never knew why. I wish I still lived in that house just so I could oil them real quickly.

I will rescue every dying original out there, and buy any one from thrift shops, habitat for humanity, and antique stores

Actually a negative on that, turns out the fan was never ran, but was hung as a display and it did get damp, I discovered this revelation when I disassembled it for salvaging parts off it because I thought it was, you know, dead. I wound up selling this particular fan for $410 on ebay.

1/4" of axial play is perfectly normal for these fans. The bearings were simply dry, but not likely damaged. Even a well-lubricated "original" will make noise, if run in this position.

It did wind up not being damaged.

I really like this style fan and even as a child, the hunter original is what was in my parents house (1981) They also had 2 of the 36" originals. I put the classic originals in the home i lost in Hurricane Katrina and my current home has 4 of the classic original fans. I was just getting ready to buy my 5th original for the house, my second bright brass fan and found out hunter is no longer making that model / finish. Its probably worth having that fan you have refurbished.

@christiandrumr80 Originals are good fans. You know they went overseas in 2001, right? I've got one (although not in Bright Brass) that I'm listing on ebay this evening. Let me know and I'll list a brass one for you if you want one.

Being 28/56 pole, I would suspect these would make an excellent low wattage windmill... thing is though, lubrication is an issue. There was an evergo fan that had a similar motor with sealed bearings that would be a better candidate.

I just recently saw two Hunter Reversair Originals in an antique store that i went to earlier this week. They were in polished brass finish, had all the blades to them, but they looked kind of rough. On both of them there were at least 2 blades that were split, and the brackets were bent in a different way. I would have gotten them, but there wasnt a price.

Non detergent oil only. Detergent keeps the bad bits in suspension. In no detergent oil they sink or stick to the sides.

BTW, if your fan has a reverse switch, it is a little harder to rebuild since the reverse switch usually dosn survive since the design is cheap.

My 38 yr old Hunter (probably an "original") makes an awful noise, but it's mounted on a 21' high beam and I can't reach it for maintenance unless I bring in scaffolding. Have to replace it.
@mrfanman2u
@mrfanman2u 7 лет назад
gingervytis Problem is, nothing you could replace it with is going to last half that time. Would you be interested in an exchange? I am hicmanfanman on eBay and could sell you a motor for a very reasonable cost that you would switch out your pieces for.
@gingervytis
@gingervytis 7 лет назад
Thanks, I'll have a look at your eBay offerings. I was considering a new Emerson with the KL55 stack motor, but nearly $600. I don't want anything with a wireless receiver in it either... it will fail and it's too high to reach.

@vernonnorbert Ouch... Like I said, that comment is over a year old. Maybe I did overreact in that comment, but nowadays I've got other things to do than obsess over a broken fan. Now that I come to think of it, are you even a "fan entusiast"---dare I call it that---or are you just here to pry on a comment that should really mean nothing to you. I already did "chill the fuck out..."

Why doesn't this video tell us HOW to oil it?? He's more sympathetic to the fan than he is to me..I just bought a beautiful Hunter fan at a consignment place...It's very nice..I'd like to oil it, I'm also looking for the hanging system kit..I read the manual,but I don't have the low profile washer,the isolators, or the ceiling plate..I'm assuming g Lowe's or Home Depot will have an accessory kit,but I'll call Hunter first..It's a Santa Barbara.. Discontinued...23782 model..If you have an extra answer for me,let me know..

Melody Weast 1. The title doesnt say "how to oil" 2. we are fan collectors 3. this is the original. it has a specific oil hole. these are also very expensive, US made fans made to last a lifetime (unlike the santa barbra) and this fan is oil barh, as santa barbras aren't 4. Santa Barbras can be oiled. Get some non detergent motor oil, or zoom spout, and take off all the blades and the fan off the ceiling and put a small dose into the bearings (Between the motor housing and switch housing, right where the switch housing rod enters the motor, in the bearing) then, spin the motor around and work the oil in.
