Hi all, I just wanted to confirm that the right number marking is 10 degrees BTDC. I also just ran a double check across front pulleys and under the car bell housing viewing panel which confirmed the white mark painted on my flywheel is the correct timing mark to use. So I have done another very very small adjustment today which I posted on my instagram page as it's only a 1 minute video to verify. Thanks Marty for the eagle eye on the fly wheel marking of 10 degrees too as you can see it when fully zoomed in. Happy to report car is running great and idling perfectly. 👍

You were pointing to the valve timings in the Haynes Manual. For the ignition timing the user manual (1981) states 10 degr. BTDC @ 950 +- 50 RPM without the vacuum hose connected on the distributor. Your flywheel marking was showing -10 not 6 (just zoom in). Adjust idle before measurements. After turning your distributor connect the vacuumhose. Idle rpm will then increase slightly. Great vids by the way. Thank you for sharing.
@Witty924
@Witty924 3 года назад
Good shout on this one Marty. You are right on the valve clearance part and the 6 degrees. Going to do a double check via the under side of the bell housing cover tomorrow. I know everything is aligned but no harm in double checking 👍

Markings may have been added by the previous owner in case an incorrectly mounted flywheel. You can check TDC of first cilinder by removing the oil filler cap. You can see the cam lobes. Check campulley marking and crankpulley markings versus flywheel markings and position of rotor in the distributor.

I recently remove the distributor (not the orange cap) and when i put it back the car won't start... And for some weird reason mine doesnt seem to have a condenser and there is an empty electrical terminal on the distributor? Do i have to adjust the timing everytime i remove the distributor? Cheers, Dennis! Also btw i subscribed :D
@Witty924
@Witty924 2 года назад
@@dennismolina2339 hi Dennis, thanks for subscribing and the support. So when you removed the distributor it should slide straight out, however the timing is adjusted by turning the distributor clockwise or anti clockwise, so you may need to adjust the timing to get it started correctly. Hi Paul. Depends on the year of your 924. The earlier years did but later years moved to a electronic. You can upgrade to electronic if you choose too, some good information on the steps to take on various 924 forums. 👍

@@Witty924 hi witty yes I have electronic ignition I was unsure If it was running a condenser? Just done my timing without a strobe crazy but true, took it to tdc lined the marks up on the crank pulley and cam pulley made sure they were in line with a bit of old credit card took the dizzy cap off and there is a very faint timing mark on the edge of the dizzy housing that you line up with the centre dot on the rotor arm timing done no expense on a strobe 😊😊😊 I couldn't find a garage that knew what they were doing or had a strobe so I thought sod it I will do it myself, chuffed to bits.

Hi witty still having problems starting, I have air, petrol and spark the spark seems weak it was running rough it's had a new rotor arm, new plugs new leads new dizzy cap new injectors and injector leads and injector seals and seats replacement alternator and a new battery the timing is fine I am leaning towards a replacement ignition control module is it housed in that box behind the lights on the left hand front wheel arch or do I need the whole box I don't know if you can just change the component would this cause a weak spark and a situation where it won't start any thoughts would be great as I'm at the end of my tether thanks so much witty 😂😂😂

Hey Paul, good to hear from you. I'm sure you mentioned you also did a compression test to ensure all is good with the internals? the ignition unit behind the light on the wheel arch could be the culprit. @@Witty924 hi witty, thanks for writing back don't know anyone with a unit I can borrow 🙁 spark is weak orange/red not blue/white as it should be, it's had new plugs, ht leads, rotor arm dizzy cap, coil, replaced alternator, the sensor in the dizzy might be faulty or it's the ignition control unit I think it might be the ignition control unit as I might of blown it with a bad earth the symptoms are a weak spark, rough idling, a bit of back fire, poor starting and a slight smell of petrol in the exhaust pipe, I'm cleaning up my earth's but when I type into Google it comes up as a ignition control unit as a black plug in unit or the entire silver box that is mounted behind the headlight on the wheel arch I don't know which it is should I get the entire silver box or do I get the black plug in unit that might go in the silver box??? I am so unsure all the symptoms point to the fact I think I have blown the ignition control unit I'm getting air, petrol but a weak spark, compression is OK it was running not long ago oil pressure is 7 bar???? I just don't know what the ignition control unit looks like either the silver box or the. Black plastic unit sorry to hassle you Witty it's wrecking my head help pleaseeeeeee.

@@pauldavies8638 not to worry always happy to help a fellow 924 friend. So the black unit you see for sale now are upgrade replacements I believe. I think cleaning the earth's is a good start, they can suffer from bad connections. Do you have the Haynes manual too?
@Witty924
@Witty924 7 месяцев назад
@@pauldavies8638 I also forgot to say, double check your cold start injector is not leaking and that it shuts off correctly after starting, if it leaks that could cause additional fuel intake and smell. Also, just double-check you have no air leaks in any of the vacuum lines, the smallest of leaks will affect the running so worth another look. Let me know how you get on. 🤞

@@Witty924 hi witty I have a Haynes manual I am going around my earth's with a dremmil with a wire brush on it looking at the silver box the connections seem different than the black replacement unit which also seems tiny in comparison from what I've read the silver box tells the coil to power up which makes me think the Icu is responsible for the weak spark there doesn't appear to be any leaking at the cold start injector it just seems to me that the spark at the plugs isn't hot enough to to ignite the petrol probably going to take a chance on a replacement silver ignition control unit box. Thanks for your thoughts Paul.
