My mum is head of the team at the British Council that made this :)))). Right now I'm studying Macbeth in year 10 and I am one of the few in my class that love Shakespeare. I guess it comes from my mum who always had a passion for it. When I was little I won an English prise and my school gave me a Usborne abridged version for kids and I remember just loving it. once I did the whole play mid-summers nights dream using my playmobile, I was a weird 9 year old. I hope I will continue doing things around Shakespeare when I leave school.

My first memory of being in contact with shakespeare was going to see a kids production of a midsummer nights dream. Me and my best friend came home and tried to make a love potion out of water, red food colouring, heart shaped ice cubes and rose petals!

I think my first real introduction to Shakespeare beyond the cultural absorption of Romeo and Juliet as THE love story was in one of my primary school classes. Each class had books in it, and one of mine had these four Shakespeare-for-children books. Macbeth was definitely one of them, and so was Much Ado About Nothing. They had cute illustrations and simple language, and I remember reading them over and over, especially Macbeth. I think A Midsummer Night's Dream was introduced to me through watching the video of the 1975 version of Ballet Shoes. The sisters in that were involved in a production of the play, so I knew the names of some of the fairies they were playing before I knew anything about the story as a whole.

We studied Romeo & Juliet in 9th grade, and I can't remember knowing anything about Shakespeare before reading that play for class. I'm sure I must have heard lines here and there over the years from his plays before then, but I didn't know it was him. I took a class on the works of Shakespeare in college, and I loved it! It's hard to believe he's been gone 400 years! His work is still so relevant today. Thanks for the video! :)

My mum had an illustrated book called "Shakespeare Märchen" (= fairy tales). I remember looking at it when I was little. I kind of knew about Romeo and Juliet, I knew Shakespeare quotes (in their German translations) and when I was 15 or so I watched Romeo+Juliet with DiCaprio. We never did Shakespeare at school even though I took advanced level English. When I started my BA studies in English, I was in a class where we could decide between writing a paper on the use of puns in Hamlet or the endings of postmodern short stories. I bought Hamlet and hated it. Hated it to no end. Wrote about modern short stories, got my BA without doing a single class about Shakespeare and intend to go about my MA studies the same way.

I can't actually remember when I first came into contact with Shakespeare. He's just always been a thing that I have known since my earliest years. The first play I read of his was Romeo And Juliet for my Junior Certificate. I honestly loved the story line, but the analysis of the play really turned me off it. My class went to see a play of it and it was honestly so much better than reading it in a classroom. Getting to experience the emotion of the actors and the suspense that some scenes brought was truly something else! I would recommend to anyone that is studying a play by Shakespeare to see it live or a movie version of it! It was so much better than reading it

I saw an actor recite the sonnet in Romeo and Juliet where Romeo says 'shall I compare the to a summers day? ' it was on the one show I think! I was aged 7 and I have read each of his works since then, I love his work and will continue to study it for as long as I can!

I'm in love with "The Bard". ❤ Here in Italy my English teacher only had the chance to introduce us three of his most famous plays: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth. I was utterly struck by his brilliance. As you can imagine, I'm learning English as a second language. That's why reading Shakespeare can be pretty tough but I don't give a hoot and I've read Macbeth, King Lear and Hamlet on my own. I can't help loving his works and your videos are awesome. You youtubers that study Literature are like spiritual guides for me. 😊 I wish I'll be able to appreciate Shakespearean masterpieces in an English-speaking uni.

My first contact with Shakespeare (in school anyway) was in my first year of secondary school when I was about 11/12. I remember my teacher was quite passionate about his work and before we looked at any o his work we learnt about the globe theatre and facts about the actors props costumes ect, I found it quite interesting but also helpful because it was as if we already had a scene set before we read any of his work

Thinking about it.... Barney rings a bell, I have this very slight memory of watching an episode of Barney when they did a the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet ... Maybe this is all lies, who knows! We did King Lear for my leaving cert and I'm so delighted we did! 😊 It was always something I enjoyed writing about which made it nicer when it came to the endless essay we did durning the year. Now that I'm finished with secondary school I really do hope I keep some form of a relationship with Shakespeare... I bought this beautiful second hand copy of The Tempest a few years ago, hopefully I'll read that over the summer now. ☺

I don't know how I first came into contact with Shakespeare, I know I first studied Titus Andronicus in Hear 7 but my first real memories are of playng Snout in A Midsummer's Night Dream (Bernard Cribbins played the character in the excellent recent BBC adaptation). I've done Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night since then, and read the sonnets briefly. Now I'm studying Hamlet for a level and I love it so much, I've seen the Cumberbatch and the recent RSC production, both in cinema, both brilliant. I love watching Shakespeare more than reading it because I understand it more, but I think I'll always continue to look into it. I was also delighted the other day when I discovered bardalature, look it up!

I was introduced to Shakespeare at an early age due to my older sister wanting and becoming an actress and I believe I was given for one of my birthdays a children's collection of Shakespeare's plays, each like 10 pages long, but I just grew to love them and I still have them on my shelf. The first time I actually read Shakespeare was in school and we read Midsummer's night dream but since then I've read a few other and even performed two high school adaptations of King Lear and a Comedy of Errors which both were amazing. I now have the complete works of Shakespear book, which is huge, in my room which I plan to read some of the plays this summer. I have also seen Hamlet (both live and on tv), The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Henery VI part 1 (I think), As You Like it, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Titus Andronicus.

The first time I came into contact with Shakespeare (knowingly) was in year 6 when my class had seriously abridged versions of a lot of his plays up at the back for anyone who forgot a book for reading time. I conveniently "forgot" my own book every day until I read them all. I have now just finished my English literature and drama a-levels studying King Lear and Hamlet and I am going on to drama school so I can't see my relationship with Shakespeare ending any time soon!

When I was in school I studied The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet. I really enjoyed reading the Tempest and found in utterly fascinating and as for Romeo and Juliet, we each read parts in class and watched one of the film versions which I really enjoyed.

I, like you, don't remember when I first came in contact with Shakespeare. I think it might have been a random film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. I do remember when I first tried to get into Shakespeare. I was in grade 9 and my English teacher had a huge bookshelf full of classic novels. I remember seeing a volume of the complete works of William Shakespeare. It was so old and cool looking that I asked to borrow it. However, I realized very quickly that I wasn't going to be able to make it through a page let alone the entire book. I proceeded to carry that book around with me for weeks just because I liked how it looked. I have since read a plethora of his plays, performed scenes from some, and watched many on stage and film. I am partial to his comedies. Much Ado About Nothing has always been a favorite. I even have a quote from the play tattooed on my arm. I am very excited to try that MixThePlay thing. Thank you for showing it. And for sharing!

I remember being involved in a amateur children's production of The tempest (presumably with modernised dialogue). I also studied Shakespeare at GCSE where we did Julius Caesar which I really enjoyed. Then last year in A Level we used Twelfth Night which was a confusing read but an enjoyable one.

I'm from Canada and in school we generally study a Shakespeare play every year from about age 13 onwards (in addition to studying other writers). I did A Midsummer Nights Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, and Hamlet.

I probably heard about him before, but my first encounter with Shakespeare was studying Hamlet and The Tempest in primary school. We went to go and see Hamlet at my local theatre, but of course I was ill that day :( anyway my mum bought me these children's cartoon versions of the plays and I really enjoyed it. ever since I have loved Shakespeare and studied Much ado about nothing, Hamlet, Othello and Twelfth Night

first experienced Shakespeare in year7/8 through a midsummer night's dream but I only really started to like it when I became obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio (don't judge) and his version of Romeo and Juliet. also the movie Shakespeare in love, although entirely fictional gave a new perspective on it. I'm currently studying a levels and Othello as part of that and I do love the play, but for GCSEs I studies Henry v and just couldn't get on with it. perhaps it was because i didn't understand it at the time but I'm not even sure I would now. i like to think I will read/watch more plays in the future, particularly hamlet but how likely that is I'm not sure. great video, sorry for waffling😂

There was a beautiful picture of a flower in my bathroom as a child with quotes from Romeo and Juliet and my mom explained the story to me, but didn't mention the name Shakespeare. I thought it was a true story! Many years later I read Romeo and Juliet my first year in high school and Julius Caesar my second. Absolutely hated them. Then my third year in high school I had a wonderful teacher who really made me love Shakespeare while we read Macbeth. I hope to read more of his work in the future and possibly study it in college.

I'm studying Romeo and Juliet for English lit GCSE, and I never really liked it but I recently got a new teacher, and he's actually made it interesting. I think I first came into contact with Shakespeare because my mum bought my brother and I children's versions of the plays when I was about 6

My mum is a huge Shakespeare fan so I was raised on Shakespeare. I was very almost named Rosalind after the character in As You Like It which I now find rather fitting because of my gender identity and sexuality. I saw my first production when I was 7 years old - A Midsummer Nights Dream - and have regularly gone to see plays at both the RSC in Stratford and the Tobacco Factory Theatre in Bristol. For me studying Shakespeare took the life out of it because of poor teaching but there was a Shakespeare club at my school that put on productions. I think performing Shakespeare is the easiest way to understand the plays as it actually puts you in the characters shoes

Good video; I think my experience is similar to yours in regard to school - In my days at secondary school we studied Shakespeare every year, almost non-stop; we studied his plays through years - we watched Macbeth live in Regent's Park in London, which was a pretty fun, interesting experience; we then went on to study Othello, Romeo and Juliet in the form of essays and analysis and such; and then Midsummer Night's Dream in my Drama GCSE-s; I think we studied it so much that I grew very tired of it over the ages - playing a role in Midsummer's Night was by far the most interesting part, seeing the play come to life in our own world and such. Unfortunately we analysed everything to death, and analysis like that does ruin a lot of good stories I think, and I've always felt that, perhaps, more modern works should take Shakespeare's place; I've found that its a little overrated, of course that's just an opinion. Part of my dislike for it probably comes from my experiences in studying it far too much in the past.

We never had to study Shakespeare in school, so I haven't ever read or watched any of his work except for an american remake of Romeo and Juliet (for children) called: ''Gnomeo and Juliet'' which was about, you guessed it... garden gnomes. It wasn't very good and I do not believe it represents his work at all as it doesn't even resemble the original story. So I have yet to find out what Shakespeare really is about.
