What an amazing review! I could literally listen to you talk for ages, I can wait to read a book that you've written in the future. You have such a lovely calming disposition
i'm buying this as soon as i get paid haha! i love your reviews because you explain and draw me in as though i'm someone who reads as much as she should. I have never read a lot but love it and your enthusiasm makes me want to do it for myself to broaden my horizons!
What a fabulous review and analysis! One of the best reviews I've watched in months. You really make a claim for this novel, so much so that I've already put it on hold at my local library. Thank you. Thank you for promoting this book. Superb job!
Candice, I love this review. I'm interested in the history of Manson and the family now, but also I'm definitely intrigued by the book itself. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I've heard nothing but good things about this book and your review has made it sound like everything I've ever wanted so I've just pre-ordered it. Thanks! :)
mr strong and mr pricklepants making a casual appearance. i love listening to your book reviews even if they're not my type of book. you have a very intriguing cadence
I've never heard of Charles Manson or the "family" but now km really intrigued to learn more! Also this book sounds great I'll have to pick it up when it's out.
That's very interesting, I'll definitely look for this book when it comes out. Do you listen to the You Must Remember This podcast? It's great, she talks about last century's Hollywood and dedicated a season to these awful crimes.
hi Candice! Have you ever read "looking for Alaska" by John Green? It's absolutely brilliant! There's such a twist in the middle and it's brilliant I really recommend it! :)
Does it have a lot of temporal back and forths? I get motion sickness if I read another book which continually switches in time :/ but other than that it seems a really interesting perspective!
+Lorenza Pozzi Nope! It's written really comfortably, almost like the flashback sections are a long dream and then you wake up with the narrator in the present. The majority of the book is 1969. :)
Sounds really intriguing. Is the Charles Manson figure peripheral or does he have agency in the story? Curious because I always think it is interesting when, instead of covering the "spotlight" character/s, a writer pulls back and shows how the mere existence of a person or an event can effect a community or even country (in both profound shock and mundane ways). I often think of the movie zodiac when a story tackles that perceptive. Doesn't John Waters have an interest with Patty Hearst as well? These women, Van Houton (beauty) and Hearst (pedigree and affluence), both figure as fringe outcasts almost romanticized by Waters.
+FerrisBaxterian Definitely peripheral. I think the main character only has one brief conversation with him, and then the rest of his ideas are sort of filtered down through hearsay. I don't know too much about John Waters, but I'll look into that :)
have you (or anyone here) read "The vanishing act of esme lennox"? It's very interesting and has a similar back and forth between old and young esme (and other characters) I think you would enjoy it :) it's quite dark
This book takes on difficult and intriguing storyline to explore for a first published novel. I am very familiar with the real life protagonist this volume draws from. From your review it sounds like the author utilized a type of 'historical' fiction format that I enjoy where the characters give the reader a sense of and insight into who these people were/are without trying to portray the actual person. This takes a skilled writer to do well. ~ One point I somewhat disagree with is that almost anyone that found themselves in this type of horrible circumstances would succumb to a charismatic yet demonic figure like Manson. He very deliberately surrounded himself with troubled, weakened people that had a poor sense of self and were thus easily manipulated. ~ Manson and the family can be a very disturbing subject to explore and I always warn people as to its nature!
