Dr David Sinclair explains how sleep affects our lifespan. Why is poor sleep so damaging to longevity? Why is a lack of sleep not a hormesis stressor like fasting or training? Why does Dr David Sinclair think people don’t understand the impact of sleep? How much longer can you live if you sleep well? How do sleep habits change with age? Is Dr Matthew Walker’s sleep advice legit?

I've never ever had jet lag. The sun goes down, so do I. The sun comes up, so do I. I spent a whole summer in Trodheim, Norway where the sun never went down between July and August but after 9pm, I'd begin to yawn whilst outside. The moment I saw my bed, it was game over. Man, I love catching up on some zzs. God bless sleep. What a beautiful thing it is to just disappear into a completely different world for several hours.

I heard that using an alarm clock is bad for us. Even when I sometimes set one for when it is critical for me to wake up to say catch a flight, my mind wakes me up just before the alarm is due. Another revelation was when I thought that I couldn't sleep sometimes, but was asleep, just not in deep sleep. Sleep is so strange, like trying to spot when you actually fall asleep.
@CoachStephenDredd
@CoachStephenDredd 2 года назад
The reason an alarm has a negative effect is because it will interrupt the sleep cycle you are in. We cycle multiple times through various brain wave states and without an alarm the mind and body is left to do what it know best and waking naturally when the body is ready is the optimal way. Just to add what's worse than an alarm is hitting the snooze button for ten minutes and drifting off into the first cycle of sleep and then being woken just minutes after will leave you feeling rough for a while

So the anti work movement is a real thing? Sheet. But why is keeping proper sleep patterns in a 5 day work week a huge challenge for most? Whats changed? Could it be that people just aren't tired enough? I think people stress far too much about not getting enough sleep and I know the 8 hour a night recommended amount of sleep is BS, its much closer to being 6-7 hours as an optimal amount and even less if you are old.

Well said! Heard this the other day: how many years do we actually have that we can call our own? Let's say we live until 80, one third of it will be spent on sleep assuming an average of 8 hours a day, that deducts about 25 years leaving us with 55 years...another 8 or more hours is spent at work for we need $ to survive deduct another 25 years and we are left with 30 years...of these 30 years left we have to devote another half of it to care for our family members and that leaves us with about 15 years...of these 15 years left we have to take away probably another 10 years in which we will live with some form of chronic diseases which leave us with 5 years...isn't that sad that life is actually death in the mirror...go figure 🤔

Sleep anxiety is a real thing. It's made insomnia that was caused by a noisy living situation so much worse, and harder to correct. I'm just trying to not think about it, but I don't regularly get an acceptable amount of sleep, Fitbit average is around 4 hours per night, but I'm hoping with some adjustments, giving myself time by going to bed earlier, it will gradually improve without stressing too much. Someone told me a good argument, that maybe I should embrace 4 hours sleep, and that actually gives me an extra 4 hours life per day Vs an 8 hour person, after all, we are basically dead when sleeping life away. Obviously I reject that argument, as I think quality of life is less on low sleep. Plus low sleep will likely bring the age of death forward.

@@NineDiamont - Temperature control. Your lungs aren’t huge fans of air that’s too hot or cold. Unless you have an obstruction (like a deviated septum or chronic rhinitis), your nasal passageways will warm (and sometimes cool when needed) the air to your lungs. Your mouth doesn’t have a way to do this. For example, winter runners who breathe deeply through their noses get warmed air without sending a chill to their lungs, versus those who breathe with their mouths. - Filtering. The cilia in your nose passageway filters out debris and toxins in the air and sends them directly down your throat instead of your lungs. (Gross, but intentionally better in your stomach than anywhere else.) Mouth breathing sends whatever’s in the air directly into your lungs. - Humidifying. The passages in your nose are specifically designed to humidify the air you breathe, something not present in your mouth. Ever wake up after a restless night’s sleep with dry mouth or sore throat? Chances are, you’re fighting nature by mouth-breathing, and you’re not getting the humidifying or moisture-balancing benefits of nasal breathing. www.google.com/amp/s/health.clevelandclinic.org/breathe-mouth-nose/amp/ Also breathing through your nose allows for the oxygen to sit and become CO2 whereas breathing through your mouth inhales too much oxygen and then exhales too much, leaving your body with pretty much no necessary CO2.

When you go to your doctor for an appointment, you don't verify any personnel information with the receptionist because you will not provide any due to security concerns regarding health network security? You hand them a paper only medical record and they are okay with this? When you have surgery, the doctor records all surgical notes on paper to store in a hospital file, with an anonymous patient name in case the file is broken into? You have provided the state and federal government with no required information because they will store it electronically? Do you think some random, American worker bee like yourself is worth the trouble to hack into to steal your heart rate and metabolic data? Now, I'm not some "govern me harder daddy" sheeple, but I find it contradictory when people want to ignore a multitude of issues to take a stand against one. On the question about why sleep isn't a hormetic stressor: the examples mentioned, exercise and plant chemical ingestion, are hormetic stressors because the body has evolved dedicated physiological feedback mechanisms to dynamically adapt to those stressors as needed in order to save energy, and the supposed "benefits" we observe are actually just recovering an incapacity we have living in a sterilized environment far removed from the one these systems evolved to work in. By definition at some level the longevity benefit for more of those stressors levels off and starts to decline, and we can perhaps call that an expected state. if not a richer The brain has at least a similarly if not a more stimulating environment than the evolutionary past due to the developments of human coluture: it has perceptions to process and movements to make, so we already experience it operating at it's intended maximum, mysteries of sleep and all, and deviation from this is behaviour is naturally contentious to proper functioning and longevity. Perhaps we can actually define mental stimuli as a hormetic effector of longevity as well in light of the amount of research on the influence of mental health and neurochemistry on general health and longevity outcomes.
@TomCarberry413
@TomCarberry413 3 года назад
I have little confidence in medical approaches to longevity. People who live long tend to have certain things in common -- active lives, active minds, above average fitness for their age, and avoidance of the road of excess, for while it may lead to the palace of wisdom it shortens lives. Iatrogenesis, or harm by medical care, causes more deaths in the US than all illegal drugs, homicides, and car accidents combined. If you have a fat doctor that should worry you. If a doctor offers you drugs take Nancy Reagan's advice and just say no, or for the more polite people, no thanks. When doctors go on strike death rates decline.
@definitelynotnick2454
@definitelynotnick2454 3 года назад
wow incredible insight, by that metric we should go back to the stone ages when there were no doctors or medication.
@TomCarberry413
@TomCarberry413 3 года назад
@@definitelynotnick2454 Plato in his Laws discussed slave doctors and free doctors for the rulers. Slaves doctors didn't know their patients personally, saw them only when they complained of an illness, and prescribed drugs for them. That perfectly describes modern medicine for most people. In contrast, doctors for the rulers knew their patients, knew their lifestyles, and prescribed lifestyle changes when things went awry. Modern drug based medicine stems from "germ theory," or that we "catch" diseases and therefore a pill or a shot can "cure" a disease. This has no basis in fact or observation and stems from fraudsters like Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch and the AMA. Modern medical schools all teach germ theory and pill cures because vast profits exist in drug dealing. Big Pharma finances all the medical schools and does not permit any contrary thought. So-called "medication" kills between 200,000 and 800,000 people a year in the US, depending on the source. Even the Big Pharma controlled CDC admits the problem of Iatrogenesis. Since doctors report cause of death we may never have accurate figures. Some forms of medical care have improved greatly, like surgery on limbs. But life expectancy in the US has declined for many groups, such as blacks and white males and barely has inched up for others. If you think pills will improve your health and the length of your life I suspect you also believe in the tooth fairy and Santa and that Government exists for your benefit and your vote counts. Magical thinking learned in childhood tends to stick with most people. Give the AMA money and they will cure cancer, a lie they have pushed for many decades but people still believe. If you want to live a long life stay away from pills and doctors who prescribe them. Watch a few Dr. Vernon Coleman videos on youtube such as his recent Ignorance and Prejudice in Medicine. An old, thin doctor. Work out, cut down on eating, fast regularly, reduce your stress, develop regular habits, including sleep. Avoid "medicine," because it can kill you.

I have a family member who just sleeps 2-3 hours and wakes up at midnight to start his day, what's up with that?
@ola333221
@ola333221 2 года назад
It's interesting, but he didn't really answer the question. I'm still wondering why less food and more exercise are good stressors, but less sleep is always a bad stressor. Circadian timing does not seem to cover it. It's like lack of sleep has similar stressing effects on the body as a pathogenic infection or injury? Can't wait to read the upcoming research on that, if it ever appears at all.

I think it's what you said, lack of sleep is similar to an infection or an injury. Sleep is restorative to our bodies. Our bodies are healing and repairing themselves when we sleep. On another video he mentions that eating is a form of rest for the body. So eating too much is equivalent to not getting enough activity and exercise, if you think about it. Eating = rest, too much eating = too much rest, too much rest = bad. That's how I see it at least.
@ola333221
@ola333221 2 года назад
@@niellalien Very interesting, I think mostly true. Maybe more like- too much eating is not necessarily too much rest, but too much work for the body to process the food, it’s taxing? Also, technically, if we slept too much, that would also cause unwelcome physiological effects, not as bad as sleeping too little, but we would get the unwelcome effects of a stagnant sedentary lifestyle.

The problem is not just the sleep. Its food and activity too. When you eat and sleep atthe same time every day - your body starts to get ready for food and sleep at the same time - making digestive biles, making you feel sleepy, ect. But when you are not - the body is confused - do we sleep, do we eat? And if you introduce coffee - then its a shit show.
