Southern California residents in coastal communities are bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Hilary this weekend. Currently a Category 4 hurricane, Hilary is forecast to head north through Baja California before making its way into the Southland.
Southern Californians should start feeling the remnants of Hilary on Saturday as cloud coverage increases and light rain starts to fall. Stronger showers are expected to move in on Sunday with the heaviest rain forecast to fall late Sunday into Monday. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass held a press conference Friday to discuss the city’s preparation for the storm.

I’m actually happy they will get rain. California needs only worry about mud slides, you MAY see power outages. It’s going to feel like a strong rain storm and that’s about it. Surfers will LOVE it.

Sandbags are available at LA County Fire stations, but there is NO sand to fill them. And it is illegal to take sand from the beaches. Why hasn't Newsom activated a state of emergency to have all resources made available? OES websites have no info on resources for prepping. Trucks of sand should have been delivered already to all public works buildings.

How long have you lived in Southern Cal.? I've lived here 70+ years and the authorities are NEVER prepared. Frankly, I'm shocked people are even talking about it, that's almost unheard of..

@@devans83 I worked for Riverside County for years and then retired from, City of Indio and I can only give one instance when the authorities ever prepared for an non-existent emergency. We did a mock emergency drill where all our civic leaders went to the county's fallout shelter. The thing is, fallout shelters protect you from squat, nada. You still die from radiation poisoning only it takes you longer and you die an excruciating, miserable death. Sorry, but them needing to do something and them actually doing something is a lost cause. If we ever did have a major catastrophic event, of course. emergency personnel and first hand responders would be protecting their own families first.

Back in 90's or 2000 something. A resturant on water destroyed. This storm stronger. Leave beach front property. Ocean side Beach front is in worst threat.

That’s with any coastal area during a hurricane/tropical storm. Honestly, the flooding will probably be huge. I saw one city scoop up sand to make a wall on the beach. That ain’t going to do crap. Only way to prepare is to use sand bags to help with the storm surge. Praying for y’all!

Storm surges were 12-18 feet during Ian last year. Some homes and buildings saw flooding up to the second floor. Don't stay in ground-level/flooding areas. That's how over 100 people died in the Fort Myers Beach area.

And those sand hills scooped up on y’all’s beaches ain’t going to cut it. They should’ve used sand bags. Preparation was agonizing to watch.

The Imperial county region is the only part of the state that is still under moderate drought conditions. This event will likely end the drought there. Lakes Meade and Powell will also benefit.

For people evacuated at "the last minute", thus for whom it may be unsafe to travel anywhere other than to local emergency shelters, but who also have pets ... what should they do with their pets? If there are designated pet shelter (vs general shelter admitting pets, what are various locations' requirement policies (cages, food & H20, immunization records, I.D. tags on collars, Etc.)? What about ESA pets (& needed documentation)? Also, what's the status of most residents' Flood Insurance for hurricane damage? What are family members' responsibilities re patients in Nursing Homes, Hospice facilities, Etc.? What public transportation options are available & at what cost? Are life preservers advised for certain high-risk residents?

This hope that this storm damage diminishes before it does any damage to Southern California residence I live like maybe 15 minutes 20 minutes from the coast. I am freaking out I live in a mobile home park and never floods. I hope it doesn’t supposed to go to work tomorrow but I don’t know if I can I get out of my mobile home park and go down the street because it floods. I’m turning back around and I’m going home because the streets here flood real quick I wish everybody at the beach that live there. Please be safe and protect what you can protect.

Is there rally going to be that much storm surge, or is it mainly going to be rain? Because depending on which the sand burm will be a saving grace or their downfall. The rain water needs to reach the ocean. Otherwise, you'll have something like what happened in Texas with Harvey.

There was one back in the 80's and another in the 70's. Both were Hurricanes that turned into tropical storms, extremely rare but it happens. It could be worse, think if you lived in Texas or Florida. Everyone is worried about flooding but haven't heard one word about mudslides or homes sliding down the side of a cliff. But then when you repeatedly build in dangerous places you take your chances.

🔦 flashlights... water water water drinking and to wash, paperplates..stews soups ahead of time easy to heat... sandwhiches... power goes out luck, 🔋 batteries, charge everything now... if at beach and staying bord up..id leave, talk to fire dept for Advice on your location ! What their protocols are for your area street...plan exit strategy, know where shelter are in case u get evacuated out.

As of 6pm, in Los Angeles there are still plans to hold a CicLAvia event. This event closes down the streets to cars and opens the streets exclusively to Bikes🚴‍♀, Skaters🛼, Skateboarders🛹joggers🏃and Pedestrians🚶‍♀. This particular CicLAvia event goes back and forth between Hollywood and Koreatown.... ...With the threat of strong winds and heavy rain, I question the lack of action of our city leaders who are failing get out in front of the possible consequences.
