Do you suffer from constantly hitting behind the ball, thinning the ball, or even topping the ball?
Then you can’t control the bottom of your golf swing arc, or where the club strikes the ground. And you’re not alone… 99% of all golfers struggle with this skill. It truly is a worldwide epidemic that defines poor play.
For expert players, the low-point of their swing is ALWAYS after the ball with all shots struck from the ground. For the average amateur golfer, the bottom of their swing arc is all too often BEFORE the ball, causing FAT shots, THIN shots and TOPPED shots.
No matter your level of golf, EVERYONE can benefit from improving this skill. There is a strong correlation between a golfer’s ability to control of the swing’s low-point/arc and their handicap. This is because controlling the low-point results in more consistent contact, which results in more predictable distance making it easier for you to hit the ball closer to your intended target.
So how can you train and practice to improve this skill? Traditional driving range mats DON’T provide good feedback when it comes to identifying exactly where the club hits the ground. In fact, sometimes, you can hit behind the ball on a firm driving range mat and get the feedback of a good shot - however, that same swing and contact on the ground before the ball off the grass would produce a very different outcome. So you’ll likely ingraining a swing on the range that simply CANNOT transfer to the golf course!
Practicing this skill is often overlooked as it seems so simple and obvious, but are YOU really spending enough of your practice time and focus developing this vital skill?
A huge factor influencing the ability to hit the ground AFTER the ball every time, is the location of a golfer’s weight thought the swing. In this video I will share a very simple drill that will highlight your ability (or deficiency) when it comes to successfully controlling the low-point of your swing and allowing you to hit the ball then the turf, EVERYTIME.

Exelent video - explains why i after 2 years of practise on the mat still cannot hit the Ball on grass. I hit very precise just before the Ball not to damage the surface of my carpet in the House and not to damage my grass in the garden. Never heard any explain it that clear - and i have seen 1000ś of videos here. Thx Rob

Hi Rob, thanks for the videos! I'm one of Parky's students in Denmark and his teaching, combined with your videos, has really accelerated my golf education and made me fall in love with the game. I think a video on the role of balance could be interesting. I don't see it explicitly discussed that often but it is clearly very important. Talking about how poor balance leads to misstrikes and how to monitor and improve balance during the swing could be helpful for a lot of students. All the best!

Rob, congrats on a great lesson😊. You are the first pro to explain why it is so important to hav3 a good ball strike , that is , it enables a golfer to hit consistent distances with all clubs. I cannot believe how so many pros stress why it is important to strike irons well but don’t give the reason that it is all about distance control and not just hitting it further. Well done Rob 😅

Thanks Rob, just got a practice mat today so the timing is perfect. Will try painters tape and then some foot powder sprat that I heard works well also. Cheers

The one major need I've lost as I've aged and the singular point of emphasis every time I swing a club in practice and in rounds To me nothing else matters until I gain the consistency you so beautifully demonstrate. I could watch this daily and thank you for this important lesson. Stay well my friend-Russ.

Thanks Rob - I really appreciate this and have ordered a divotboard. One question, please. The board looks to be one or two centimetres thick, so if we practice with that won't we then be at risk of hitting thin shots on the course where the ball is lower on the ground? Cheers!

How coincidental you showcasing Bryson's prowess in the sand here, albeit he opted to take a little sand on that final heroic shot on 18 @ Pinehurst! Love all your vids, 'been watching for several years, happy to see you active again posting this golden insight for us duffers..

He had to take sand due to his proximity to the flag. 40 yards? But judging by the sound he took very little sand. He swung quite hard. Not a shot any weekend player is able to execute.

@@Allabertina Bryson was 55 yards out, using a 50* wedge, slightly open. Of course, his wedge shafts are a lil longer than normal well. As you say, he did take a pretty strong swing through the shot.

For budget options you can use a towel or painters tape. For the towel / towel drill place it a club head behind the ball, the better you get the closer you can put the towel. I would use a dish rag or something that you don't mind destroying, I ruined a nice golf towel before I figured that out. If your mats are dry you can also use wide painters tape.
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 26 дней назад
Yep, good alternatives are rolled up towel and even the tape on the ground as you say. Thanks 👍🏻

Would appreciate some discussion of lower body weight forward while the head stays at the ball. When trying to get my weight forward I tend to lead with my upper body. That gets my hands “past” the ball and results in all sorts of heroic , ill fated attempts to strike the ball. The natural adjustment to that is to hang back with my lower body with similarly poor results
@eagleman1218
@eagleman1218 22 дня назад
My weight is definetly not forward at contact. I will try this. But wonder is it possible to get my weight too far forward ? My guess since my weight is not forward it’s unlikely.

I bought one, cheaper version, and so helpful when practicing at home. I just use a shorter iron and practice on my low point, plus watch my shows. This has been sooo beneficial and everyone would benefit of just doing this every evening to build that muscle memory.

Looks like placement of the ball is closer to the front foot?? We're taught to hit higher clubs ie pw, 9 iron back??
@robmoss7597
@robmoss7597 20 дней назад
Seen that as well with his ball placement, thought that comes to mind is everyone’s low point is different. As a result ball placement at address could be different, just my take.
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 19 дней назад
No need to have the ball further back for PW/9i etc.

Is it possible that eye focus forward may promote better low point but also may promote an error of more handle dragging/ chicken wing with less right tilt? There are some pros like morikawa whose focus and head position is significantly behind the ball at impact.
@phreak761
@phreak761 26 дней назад
Personal preference.
@robcheneygolf1
@robcheneygolf1 26 дней назад
I wouldn’t say handle dragging/chicken wing are directly correlated to where you place your eyes/focus on the ground. They are separate things in my view. Not everyone will benefit from looking in front of the ball, but I’ve seen it help many people improve their ground contact location.
