the main girl is so confusing because she’s clearly meant to be an average relatable girl next door type but they give her the personality and attitude of a mean girl bully. the actress isn’t too bad but they really didn’t care to properly flesh out her character (or any other character in the movie).
@MrBookworm01

If you think that's bad, check out F**k The Prom. It's another movie starring Danielle Campbell (the main girl's actress) where she plays a teenage girl who alternates between relatable girl next door and alpha bitch bully.

My theory is that whoever casted/directed/acting coach/whatever was a middle aged man who just thinks that every teen aged girl is bratty and annoying. So that’s what they told her to do thinking, “well teenage girls are annoying so you need to act annoying! It’ll be perfect!!”

I'm guessing they couldn't give Jessica hobbies or much of a personality because they assumed it would interfere with tween/teen girls in their target demographic surgically stitching themselves onto the character to vicariously live out their fantasies of being chosen by the celeb heartthrob of their choice. Which is absolutely underestimating those kids.

@theaterislife

Yeah, you see this in some adult romance novels too! The female character is just a self-insert for the reader, so they have to make her as bland as possible. It also feeds the fantasy that they don't have to be an active participant in the romance. They can just sit back and be their grumpy selves, and the male protagonist will fall over himself to woo her.
@MegCazalet
@MegCazalet 2 года назад
My imagination when I was a child didn’t give a shit. I had a crush on a *mannequin*. And in tween shows and movies we don’t care about how we might realistically fit in! We write our own plots in our fantasies and need no favors! Let be done with poorly developed characters in entertainment AND real life 💪
@juliusweiss5447

This is how almost every Isekai and harem anime makes their main character as well. A generic looking Japanese teen boy so any of the boys that watch those shows can imagine it’s themselves living the power fantasy and getting all the girls.

I feel like StarStruck was Disney's attempt at turning Sterling Knight into a mainstream pop artist because the Jonas Brothers were starting to get tired of Disney and they needed someone new to be their big Justin Bieber esque pop star that their target audience of teenage and preteen girls would crush on. It just...didn't really work well. 🙃

100%, they tried this again with Mitchell Hope in Descendants. He had a major role and solo songs in the 1st movie cos they were banking on Ben & Mal being the focus, but no one really cared and just wanted more of the 4 bad kids, so he was like a supporting character/damsel in distress in the 2nd movie, then barely in the 3rd one.

I would also just like to say... staging a public apology is a really unfair way to pressure someone to accept, because if they don't accept this big grand gesture apology in front of a room full of people they will look bad. Not a cool move. Ask for forgiveness in private and with humility. It doesn't mean anything if someone feels pressured to give it to you.

Something that REALLY bugs me about this film is when Chris is looking back on all the photos they took together there's a photo of them TAKING a photo - not the selfie that they would have taken with the actual camera, but a screenshot of the scene where they take the photo with a completely different angle to the disposable camera's lens. It annoys me to a frankly irrational degree.

Petition for an action thriller romance where the older sister freaks out about her sister disappearing outside a club and then realises from the news report that the celeb kidnapped her (because her shuffleboard-playing sister definitely would not leave the club with a guy she doesn't know and apparently detests), and uses her super fan stalker knowledge to track them down because the police aren't interested in a teen girl running away with a celeb heartthrob. All the car switching and ditching the car in the desert is actually intentional as they try to evade the sister, and the taking back the camera was so he could destroy the photos/evidence once he got around to killing her. He picked her because she was so generally unpleasant that he figured no one would miss her, and his real hatred of the press is because they make it very hard to discreetly abduct young girls

I think in earlier years Disney tried to make TV movies that would appeal to kids and parents, but after a while they realized that parents would often put on Disney Channel in the background to entertain the kids and the parents themselves actually wouldn't watch the show/movie that closely, which is how we ended up with a lot of weak plots and flat characters. It's just enough to keep the kids glued to the screen but not meant to actually be good or taken seriously as a film. (I'm just talking about DCOMs, not the ones that hit theaters bc those seem much better in comparison.)

I watched this movie when I was like 12 so I was definitely the target audience but I've always hated it so much, Jessica is so fucking annoying, Christopher is not cute at all (sorry, sterling) and it pisses me off how hard they tried to make us think he is, way too many sonny with a chance actors (a show I found terribly unfunny and couldn't get away from back in the day) just ugh. However I must confess I did like the songs x) and I put up with the movie cuz this is pretty much a self-insert fic of a situation I would've given my kidneys to live with Joe Jonas xD maybe that's why Jessica has no personality besides the whole "I'm not like other girls" she has going on, she's just a placement character

1) I don't know who to blame for this exactly but I am Uncomfortable that while this movie was in production, the lead actress was 14 and Sterling Knight was 20. Please, Disney, don't. It's weird. 2) I only saw this movie, parts of it, a couple of times in rereuns. I wasn't watching that much Disney channel at this point, only really tuning in for my favorite shows like HM and Wizards, and I wasn't clamoring to see the new popstar Chad Dylan Cooper movie with some girl I'd never heard of. But for some reason I always remembered the "best friends since fourth grade" line because it's such specific exposition. I was in fifth grade at the time, and I thought to myself, well, did Stubbs move to Chris's town? Did Chris move to Stubbs's town? All of *my* then-best friends, I had known for years at that point. Most people meet their elementary school best friends earlier, in grades K-to-2, because you're in elementary school for a loooong time and fourth grade is kind of late in the game, if you are not yourself "the new kid." But they never explain it, even while it is stated in detail. It is so odd. Why do they even have to have been friends that long? Looking back on that as an adult, it feels like a harrowing statement about the entertainment industry, that Christopher Wilde has gained such notorious fame and his only best friend is still the same guy he's been hanging out with since he was 9. There are no truly meaningful relationships he's built since? Not even with his shallow starlet girlfriend? Only with some random teenager who is mean to him after he injures her? Food for thought, man.

I like the soundtrack because of the “feel good” energy and easy lyrics. They’re good songs to belt out with friends on a car trip. Jessica was always annoying to me but I think I liked that she had a sense of autonomy/independence. I think they were trying to make Jessica seem like Alex Russo but they missed several steps. The movie in general is easy to watch (due to its predictability).

- thank you!!!!! everyone i follow has this movie as one of their favourites from childhood, and like i'm not here to hate, i have undying love for very bad movies, very children movies, i am the queen of nostalgia, my movie taste is basically trash, but i absolutely never got the hype for this one! - first off,for a while i thought this movie and one of the cinderalla adaptations i think it was called ella something wuth the same actor were like the same movie? so i always was confused. - we know nothing about these characters, like why should i care about this romance, where is the romance? they fight constantly, she's super rude to him for no reason, they keep talking to each other like they're telling them someone no one else had the courage to say about them and like it makes no sense because we don't see anything about their character???? - jessica is just so rude to everyone. I didn't understand why she felt she was so superior to everyone. She looked down on her sister for her obsession over Chris and the fact that she doesn't read. Like, I get that she can like his music without caring about his personal life, everyone is like that, I love so many artists and know nothing about them, that's normal, and yes, I agree that celebrity culture is toxic and useless, we don't need them, but she doesn't need to look down on her sister for her obsession, it's such a double standard. I'm sure if Jess had an author she admired deeply, no one would look down on her for loving them, yet a love like that is no more valid than a love for a musician or actor, it's really just a making fun a teen girls thing. i am so over that, it was absolutely painful to watch. - i don't understand how the parens are okay with the girls going around LA unsupervised like it's not where thymre from, is this not a family holiday, should they not spend time as a family? but no one says anything about it, it's like a bad fanfic. and also why is the older sister not worried about her younder sister disappearing when she's on her watch? as an older sister, if i was out with my little sister and she was simply gone without saying anything i would freak out - like, i have never hated a movie this intensely, i try to see the positive in everything, it's annoying to people actually, but this movie just irks me so freaking much, and i know it's an unpopular opinion, it's one of my rare ones
