Lloyd Daniels was supposed be a star in the late 80s, and throughout the 90s. Many people including the late HOF coach Jerry Tarkanian thought he was the greatest player ever! But everything that could've went wrong throughout his career did, like him being caught at a crack house at 18 while sitting out at UNLV awaiting his eligibility. He was kicked off the team and moved back to New York, where the crack smoking continued. He'd play for a few minor league teams before Jerry Tarkanian got a coaching job with the Spurs and signed him then started him at point guard as a 25 year old rookie. He was doing well until John Lucas became the coach and things changed. He'd bounced around the league after that until he was out the league at 30 years old. The addiction never stopped until recently although he still struggles with drinking. He was still able to make it to the league after everything he went through and that's to be commended. No he didn't become a star in the league, but considering the life he lived, I gotta respect it. 'Swee Pea' LLOYD DANIELS Addicted To Crack! Still Made The NBA! Stunted Growth.

Thank you for this. As a kid, I got to see Lloyd Daniels play/start for the Spurs under Coach Tark (briefly) and then John Lucas. I never knew he returned to his addictions. Unlike most street legends, Lloyd actually had an NBA build. He was big at 6-7 and strong for a shooting guard. I'd guess most basketball fans have never heard of him. I don't know how great he could've been, but the fact that he was stuck in addiction, then started playing semi-pro (USBL) ball pro and soon after was a rotation player/starter for a very good Spurs team-that's really unheard of. It's also funny how Tark brought him in after he was named HC of the Spurs. The same Tark who tried to bring him in at UNLV, but after Daniels was arrested Tark's program caught the eye of the NCAA and it eventually led to Tark's forced resignation at UNLV and subsequent hire as HC of the Spurs. Then after the Spurs fired Tark (about 20 games into his first season), John Lucas took over. Lucas, like Daniels, had past substance abuse issues and was/still is mentoring guys dealing with addiction. Lucas also, like Daniels, joined the Spurs from the USBL where Lucas was a coach (a minor league at a level lower than the CBA).

@@BadTV1993 It is about perspective. When I was 13 (remember, I was born in 1973 in Seattle), my good friend had a paper route, and when I told him I subbed before, he told me he wanted me to do it for him, when his family went to Expo 86. He said he'd pay me $4 a day. I was so excited. Well, nobody's fault, his Dad had already asked someone else. My friend felt bad, called me up, and I tried to play it off as "no problem." I went up to my bedroom, lights off, flat on my back, hands covering my eyes. I wasn't "bawling vocally," but I'm sure you know what kind of "crying" I was doing as a 13 year old. Of course, $12 doesn't even buy me a pizza, and it wasn't even all about the money. I really wanted to do his paper route. Go figure, in 11th grade, no way I would have wanted to be a paper boy!

@stuntedgrowth
@stuntedgrowth 3 года назад
Yea, we gotta look at the time in his life though. Yes he was able to do that later, but in Lloyd's time, John was just starting to solidify himself and not having another addict around, leading the charge was best in his eyes. Just my opinion, but I think that could've went better.

@@chihollywood9379 if my memory serves, I believe he was part of the Spurs staff but not a direct Tark assistant. I would have to look over my old scouting books to be sure. He was still a valuable and respected role player deep in his playing career with Houston and Milwaukee especially, so I am pretty sure he was working backstage prior to taking over. I hate when stupid people say things like you would think something negative would give a drug addict a wake-up call... No, and punishing drug addicts doesn't make them rethink their legs... They need compassion, they need help, and there's not a situation where you can point to that somebody getting everything in the world taken from them made them better... especially when they had no support system to begin with
