M*rder, ab*se... you name it, BookTok will eat it right up if it comes from a made-up moderately attractive white man wearing a motorbike helmet and cheap, sh*tty rings bought for $3 on eBay! 😐

From what I’ve heard about her books it’s not for me. A lot of the writing is too cringe for me to read at this age. I probably read stuff with similar cringe writing when I was a teen. I’m not judging too much if ppl enjoy the books bc the concepts are interesting but my main issue is when they think some of the romances are good romances. I feel bad that they don’t realize how toxic it really is. Luckily I never saw any videos that recommended Haunting Adeline. Just like how Only Fans convinced men to pay for p*rn they could otherwise find for free online, the marketing teams behind Booktok finally figured out a way to make people pay for smutty fanfiction, it’s not a coincidence that they use fanfiction tags and tropes in marketing and know that their reader base is similar to a fanfiction reader who reads nearly identical stories just to indulge over and over again in their favourite ship dynamics and story tropes, hence the low effort similarity of all these books. They’re no doubt aware smut is the biggest thing people read fanfiction for, which is why booktok novel recommendation lists bear an uncanny resemblance to search results on Ao3 with the filter set to only stories with an Explicit rating. Don’t get me wrong, I love fanfiction and some fanfiction can be extraordinarily high quality, but a lot of it is just cringe you can tell someone wrote impulsively while they were horny. I’ve noticed the style of comments people always leave on those horny fanfictions is identical to the rabid booktok content people make, particularly the singleminded fixation on smut details and collectively fantasising about it in the most shameless ways 🥲

@maem7462
@maem7462 Месяц назад
@@tywinlannister8015 Usually not but there could be situations where it’s needed. We do sometimes need to specify to the kids not to run with scissors. The specifying is more for the children who don’t know any better when they see booktok discussing toxic relationships. If we specify that it’s only good in book form or that it’s not what a relationship should be irl then that can help keep the young and impressionable kids from staying in a toxic relationship. Similar to why we warn them not to run with scissors it’s so they can lessen the chances of getting hurt. It could also normalize the relationship to an adult who is in that situation and didn’t realize that they didn’t help and maybe the book makes them stay. I’m not saying to always make your content kid friendly. With how TikTok works almost anyone has a possibility of seeing your videos. It’s good to specify something whether it’s you only like that in a book or it’s not romance that should be replicated irl. There are some things that you would think would be obvious but you never know who might be in a situation like that and then stay bc it becomes normalized bc of the book and how booktok reacts to it

As an author… I have a few pointers - no, abusive relationships are not cute. Period. - you do not need intense sexual romance to make a book interesting, if that’s what you’re into, cool. As an assistant librarian, this video is my exact opinion on this topic. While our library doesn’t have a booktok section, we do have fiction and young adult separated and I’ve had to change labels of certain books and change their label due to realizing there weren’t appropriate even though they were promoted to us as young adult. I'm an author. I absolutely HATE this kind of stuff. The fact that it's become so mainstream (booktok tables in bookstores and everything being plastered all over social media like this) is completely sickening. It's sad to me that people actually enjoy this, that people let children read this, and that people are romanticizing crime and abuse and SA and other things they would absolutely never want to happen to them in real life. There's a difference between portraying something in fiction vs. romanticizing--those topics in and of themselves are not automatically bad if they're in a book, because they do happen in real life, but in this case it's how they're glorified and handled very poorly. There's a way to write about those topics with tact and care, in order to make an impact or raise awareness in a serious way, but this is NOT it.

Animal Farm by George Rowell Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mendel (there are some couples throughout the story, and there’s some focus on relationship dynamics, but it’s not entirely focused on romance. Also, the book can be scary to read now in a post-2020 world) The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger (there’s like one makeout scene in the book, but most of the story is not really about romance) And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie The Martian by Andy Weir Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Kaiju Preservation Society doesn't have romance, Redshirts only has extremely minor subplots with it, none of which involve the POV character, the Wayfarers series has the occasional romance but the focus is on found family community building, and the Book of Tea duology is weird because it sets up a stereotypical Protagonist Girl Meets Mysterious Brooding Boy thing but it doesn't work out, they barely interact in the second book, and whilst there are feelings they don't really go anywhere definite. Those are the examples I can come up with off the top of my head, anyway. If you want to go into tie-ins and franchises, 40k books are pretty romance-free or romance-light in my experience but have their own issues. As far as classics go, Sherlock Holmes has little-to-none, and Lovecraft rarely acknowledged women existed long enough to write about relationships (but again, that's got its own issues.) I recommend short story anthologies (Neil Gaiman's are favourites of mine) because, as long as romance isn't the *theme* of the collection you're bound to find several good stories where it isn't a feature.

Ok I have a particular POV with these kinds of "books". My family has a Christmas tradition where my grandmother would take all us girls to the beach. We go shopping, we play games, and its an overall really fun adventure. Because of Covid we had not been able to do this until last year. Only four of us could make it this time, but my grandmother was still really excited. It went down hill from the moment we all got into the car. Two of my cousins were completely engrossed in their phones for nearly the entire trip. On the second day I got fed up and asked what they were reading. It was the kind of straight up smut found on booktok. They were fangirling about the abuse and bragging that they read entire books over the course of the trip. My grandmother and I had a freaking miserable time because they literally could not be separated from their addiction. It was horrible. How can you justify reading something as disgusting as that when your own grandmother is sitting across the table from you!? These people are too far gone and it seriously disturbs me to see how far they've fallen.

As someone whose Fyp is books, meaning it gave me a booktok Fyp, it even annoys me when the books aren't INSANE and has a good plot, but they don't include the book. So, I have to go fishing through the comments and either nobody knows or they're saying 7 different books. I also have a booktok section at my local Barnes and I walk past it. Because usually when I read the books there it's either horribly written, just smut, or incredibly gruesome which people find romantic. I want hallmark movie-type books. The only time I want to read about a mother unliving their children is in a horror/thriller book and the mom is insane and they need to figure that out. Colleen Hoover is the one who makes authors think it's okay to make a plot about a guy practically killing the female love interest and the FMC thinks it's romantic and they get married. Like bro-

I miss those days when booktok was all about imagining yourself if you were in an enemies to lovers novel or recommending books AND including the appropriate age for them and even if you were making scenarios like these ones they weren’t THAT bad most of them were actually cool or actually interesting. And don’t even get me started on those : “ Imagine you’re in this gown chasing your enemy in the castle ….” Like bro those were the best ones .

If I write a romance book and it ends up on booktok it’s probably going to say “ they were best friends, and he treated her with respect and kindness.”
