I am an almost 40-year-old woman. I have always loved Stitch and my mom knows that. If she sees something Stitch that is exceptionally cute, she will buy it for me. I have a small collection of things. Nothing insane. Just a couple ornaments, coffee cups, and a sweatshirt. I sometimes worry I'm a Disney adult but then I'll see how a Disney adult actually acts and I feel so relieved lol

I'm in my late teens and honestly i don't see the problem with millenials acting this way? If i look at my grandparents and their generation, most of them are miserable. My mom is a millenial and due to my job i hang with a lot of millenials, but it's nice to see them happy. I don't see why a lot of people have an issue with it. No matter how small or stupid things may seem, as long as it can bring even a moment of happiness i don't care how it looks. My mother loves plants and gets really happy from just being around them. You best believe that i keep buying her plants (So do my father, her friends and her brothers). My grandparents havo no hobbies, interests or anything, so the fact that my mom does have something really eases my mind.

Yeah the only video I truly disliked was the woman who was forcing her family to get up at 6AM. If someone forced me to get up that early on my vacation, I'd be so mad! It reminds me of a radio personality in my hometown who got a lot of criticsm when he took his family on a vacation to the Galapagos Islands, and he offered to let is 19 year old son who was in college come, but the 19 year old passed on it and his listeners seemed to be of the opinion that he should have somehow forced 19 year old to go because he'll regret the decision to not go on a once in a lifetime trip like that. Well after the trip, he told a story on the show about how they went on a deep sea fishing charter, and he finally achieved his dream of catching a Marlin...and the story also included how his 4 year old step-daughter is in a picky stage and will only snack on banana chips, but he decided not to bring her banana chips on the boat eventhough it'd be 8 hours, because bananas are considered bad luck on boats, and how is 14 year old son got really seasick and how the only thing that could have made catching the Marlin better was if his son was by his side, but unfortunately he was down in the bathroom puking. My take-away after that story was that I suddenly understood why his 19 year old didn't want to go! That's an actual example of your interests doing harm to others. However, it's not the interest itself that's harmful, it's your actions.

I'm not big on "Your X years old, how can you still like this?" People don't really grow out of their interests. I'm 26 and still love lots of "childish" things. Adults really are just kids with money and responsibility at the end of the day. Let them be happy.

Eh… I think every person has things from their childhood they will always love. I will remain a (pre Disney) Muppets fan forever more but for me that = having the seasons of the original Muppet show I grew up with and the Muppet movies I saw as a child. I don’t pull them out unless little ones are around. I introduced all of my millennial and gen Z nephews to the Muppets and I will be doing the same with my great nieces when they are old enough. It’s great to watch them experience it for the first time. That said, my house is not full of anything from my childhood outside of a movies tucked away in my entertainment center. I am almost 50 years old. I have a few sentimental items in a small cedar chest in one of my closets. This includes the quilts people made for me, and the crazy quilt coat my grandmother made me when I was 2. My childhood rocking chair sits in a corner in my guest room. I bring it out when little ones come over. The only things I collect - on and off - are select pieces of pottery and jewelry made by talented locals. I haven’t purchased new pottery in 6-7 years. I had a shelf built into my kitchen island that you can see from the living room. It’s covered in glass, it has lighting and all of my pottery fits inside of it. I don’t want it to look crowded or end up with crap all over my counters. I don’t buy a new item until an existing piece breaks. I can’t imagine collecting a crap ton of Muppets stuff at my age. I have zero desire to do this. I can’t imagine a kitchen full of Disney stuff either. Personally, when it comes to home decor, I’d rather give my money directly to artists with small businesses. I don’t know a single adult with a house full of Disney merch. My friend group would mock you into oblivion, and rightfully so.

I’m autistic and the mindset displayed in this video is why I turned inwards and stopped sharing my special interests with people around me. When I was a kid people treated me like I was disturbed for having intense special interests and anything that brought me too much joy was confiscated to “break the obsession”. Meanwhile, all my hyperfixations were harmless things like memorizing Pokemon by numerical order, memorizing dog and cat breeds, or reading the same book on a loop for comfort. These never got in the way of my chores or academic responsibilities yet something about how I enjoyed them seemed to really piss people off especially when they weren’t “conventional” teen girl things. Can we stop pointing and screeching at people who have narrow hobbies and specialized interests? Even if the people in this video are not neurodivergent, just let them enjoy their Disney pillows and placemats or whatever. Ask yourself why you go out of your way to watch videos that make you livid.

I agree 100% If something makes you happy and does not hurt or harm anyone, why should you not enjoy it?! There is enough misery in life without you taking out all the fun for yourself. I can‘t even recall how much of the last 25 years I have spend on/with/in the Harry Potter Books/movies/conventions/fanfictions/etc. or on Pokémon. I work to live and don‘t live to work. So now I am an adult with Money and share the same passion with my younger sister. When you enjoy something a lot and find somebody who enjoys it just as much you can have the most wonderful time.

Usually I agree with you sis but not this time. I’m in my mid 20s, but as a child I didn’t really have experiences like other children. I’ve always loved media like cartoons, anime, and Disney movies and used them as a form of escapism. I am also neurodivergent. Once I became an adult I worried about being perceived as cringy by others but I realize that as someone who now has her own money, I could provide myself with all of the experience and fun I never got as a kid instead of mourning the death of my childhood bc I age like everyone else inevitably does. We’ve got such a short window of childhood and the extent of what we can do is also inhibited by your parents money, personalities, habits, and situations.

My issue with Disney adults and most fandoms in general, is their love for something tends to just morph into performative displays of consumerism more than an actual love of the narratives. This may be an internet thing but I really only see Disney adults show off their merch and their superficial love of Disney but I never hear people talk about why the narratives resonate with them or something like that. Both of these lifestyles scream imbalance and promote the replacement of mental clarity and peace with purchasable material goods and a carefully curated social media persona. People making one thing, particularly purchasable things their main joy in life are lacking peace and contentment so they search for it in things rather than people and experiences. One can casually enjoy both minimal aesthetics and Disney but the people Hayley reviews are not casual enjoyers, they are basically obsessed cult members who need every item in their house branded by Disney or painted sad beige or else they are uncomfortable. I know, right? That's where I thought she was gonna go w/this vid, cause that is a valid criticism. It's pretty ableist.

Yeah, there's this and there's a couple instances in the video where it's just a clear misinterpretation of what she's reacting to as well. Like the "Do it for him" video was clearly meant to be a joke and she started going on about how ridiculous it was even though I'm pretty sure *that was the point* . Same with the "How is this Disney?!" in response to a vase that had Mickey Ears all over it (Like, I agree it's bland and not worth whatever's being charged but it's still clearly branded). Honestly? With all the other videos I've seen from her she has an actual argument but includes something she misinterpreted as "evidence". It's just with this video she ended up going for "Millenials are cringe and cringe is bad" then included a bunch of videos that are just "cringe" but doesn't elaborate on why that would actually be bad. The IHOP dancing video isn't bad because she's dancing in her seat in an IHOP, it's bad because when it was published they added captions that said something along the lines of "Look at the girl in the back" meaning that the girl at the other table is being used for content without her consent. Same thing with Disney adults, the issue isn't actually that there are adults who like Disney and go to the parks often, it's that there are some that take it *way* too far. Even extending it to the latter half of the video she's just dividing Millenials into various groups of cringe as if every single one fits into one of those categories. It's literally just repackaged intergenerational fighting again. The whole video feels like "Hey, be mad that this person likes this thing!" and ignores the underlying problems that are the *actual* issue. Edit: Also I suggest watching FunkyFrogBait. The videos cover almost the exact same topics except they actually come to real conclusions like "This is caused by consumerism" or "This is extremely concerning because it implies __ and __".

The problem is less about them enjoying something childish and more that they're so nose-deep into consumerism that they will insult and bowl over children at theme parks for getting in the way of their fun. Their fun is dependant on them giving their entire paycheck over to a corporation for overpriced merchandise. The amount of money these people spend can legitimately be dangerous because they may lack the savings they need for the future (such as for medical emergencies) because they have shopping additions. When other people are hurt or their own wellbeing is jeapordized, it's an issue. If they engage in these hobbies and connect with their inner child in a healthy way, then they can act as weird and cringe as they want imo.

Yeah, I think that last point is a good one. In fact, you could make it for men too! I mean the interests that are universally acceptable for men once they reach middle age are basically limited to golf, watching sports, working on cars, and listening to classic rock. Kind of a sparse list. Yes, some people think that middle age and older men that are into videogames are cool, but there's plenty that will argue the opposite that being a 40+ year old gamer is cringe. And, as for women, starting at middle age the universally acceptable interests are...I don't even know! Knitting and wine? It really seems like, though that, the accepable interests are "being moms" and then later "being gradmas." Not even interests for themselves, just the roles they play in other people's lives. Which, honestly, might explain why so many end up drinking as their hobby! It's one of the few things they're "allowed" to be into.

I'm not sure how old this RU-vidr is, but it sounds like she's probably pretty young. A lot of young people, or at least neurotypical young people, are taught by society that they have to stop liking things at a certain age. Some people do stop liking those things or they put them in the nostalgia category, but others don't. The thing is, though, that if they reveal that they still like that thing, they'd get made fun of, so instead they make fun of other people. When they get a bit older and hopefully wiser, they start to care less about what other people think, and they can enjoy what they like again without being embarrassed.

I know what you're saying about the disney mascot autographs, but something to also keep in mind is that Disney 'cast members' (the people who wear the costumes for different character) are VERY well trained and trained to always stay in character. there ARE multiple people who play the same character but disney also has a specific autograph for each character and they train everybody on how to write the autograph, so it should come out looking mostly the same no matter who is playing that character on a specific day, time or place. So for instance Disney assigns a specific autograph to their "Mickey" Character .. anyone who is hired to dress as Mickey in the park is taught to write that same autograph in the same way (and they all always stay in character) same thing for Cinderella, etc and this even holds true over generations of new people... an autograph you got from 'mickey' in the 90s should look pretty similar to an autograph you got today, even though there are completely different people playing the part. A lot of people enjoy collecting the autographs every time they go and TRYING to spot differnces too! but anyway, Disney goes thru a lot of effort to maintain the fantasy of their characters being 'real' in the park . People KNOW its fake, but part of the experience of the park while you're there is suspending your disbelief and buying into the fantasy.. for some that fun fantasy includes getting the little character autographs and I can totally understand that too (not my thing, really, but i can see how some would want to. I remember as a kid being so jealous of my cousins Disney autograph book lol (she had gone and gotten autographs from all the characters .. it was in like a little booklet sold by disney parks where it has pictures of the characters and its kind of like a treasure hunt to try to collect their autographs next to their photos... this was in the early 90s, not sure if they still make them lol. Personally not my thing now as an adult, but I can see the fun with that too if thats still a thing where some people see it like a treasure hunt and thats part of their fun at disney is 'collecting' the autographs, esp with the little booklet that makes it like a game to fill up all the pages like checking off a box.

I don't like the idea of "disturbing" others either...I don't think that style of filming is ok no matter what the content is. I will say though, as a nerd, I do love when I stumble on someone who has a mutual obsession as me since most of my "obsessions" are more niche, so I love that people are making public posts and videos to share. I don't know a single person in my real life who is into everything that I am, so it's nice to have other people to interact with and feel a sense of community with. If I was into football, the people saying, "find REAL people to talk about your passions with and stop wasting space on social media with your ridiculous hobbies" might have a point. But far too many of us know how hard it can be to find others who you not only get along with and live close by to, but also share the same exact obsession with that weird, obscure thing...and even then, there are football fans who can't get enough of football, and they don't want to keep annoying their spouse or friends with their incessant discussions, so they comment on a youtube video or forum instead. It makes sense, and I'm always afraid that videos like this will make really good-hearted, genuine people afraid to ever post anything again.

When we, millennials were growing up, this cute stuff was not available to us at the stores. There were toys, and then an immediate transition into the most boring old-farty stuff ever!! Burgundy kitchen towels that had no personality, coffee mugs that had nothing going for them. They were all the same exact one but had different decals slapped onto them. It was a yawn!! In terms of homeware and kitcheware. Marshalls only started to carry cute stuff in the last ten years. Before that, there was Anthropologie which was as close as we could get to cute home stuff but it was pretty expensive and not in everyone’s price range. You are of a younger generation so you do not understand our excitement when we see something we wish we had as kids. You don’t get to tell us how we express joy. Sorry, not sorry. The Disney adults are a bit strange. I’ll give you that one. And maybe it’d be best to not film these little moments of insanity for the internet to view. Other than that. Let us have our fun. You’re not the only ones who get to do that.
@EastmanEditing
@EastmanEditing 3 месяца назад
Thank you! As far as I know, we're the first generation to WIDELY accept that we can still be interested in the things we were into as a child for as long as we want! And you nailed it on the head with the lack of things we grew up with. Someone else in the comments said something along the lines of adults are only "allowed" to like typical "granny," and/or mundane things like watching Jeopardy, knitting, BBQing, mowing the lawn, raising children in a stern and traditional manner, or drinking wine. And while I enjoy a few of those things myself, I am glad I have other hobbies outside of them as well, including things that have been considered "childish" or "immature" in the past. At the same time, I'm a scientist, so it's not like I'm running around wasting my life just to intentionally annoy others with my obsessions, but I'm sure a few people roll their eyes and cringe every time I post a photo of myself in cosplay. But they can deal. I'd rather not be so miserable that seeing other people have fun makes me "want to gouge my eyes out" or "vomit" or "physically recoil." That doesn't sound very fun to me ;-)

LOL I'll give you that. I probably would've collected a lot more Little Mermaid stuff had it been available 10, 15, 20+ years ago as a younger adult. I was 14 when TLM debuted in theaters and was secretly obsessed with the animated film through HS...but being painfully shy with no internet (it didnt exist until I was out of HS) and peers & parents who seemingly judged any teenagers for 'still' liking cartoons, I thought I was the oddball out. Yeah I remember how the Disney Store at the mall literally catered to either kids or adults who could afford framed reproductions of animation cells for $200 and muted colored ceramic mugs that cost $35 in the mid-late '90s - early 2000s.

I have a small collection of squishmallows just because they make me happy but I don’t like broadcast it on tik tok to be ✨quirky✨ I agree the Disney adults can go a little overboard but it’s usually always only on tik tok not in real life (from my experience). are we shaming people for having pure hobbies? it's toxic to consider everything comforting to be childish or for children only. I live in Japan, most people have gotten the memo that cute things are girly, but also comforting and not just to kids but adults as well. Sanrio comes in adult sizes, attractions are made for grown ups. A study was made and an article was written (in japanese) that says adults and teens that have been through trauma tend to seek comfort in wholesome things typically assosiated with children stuff. It was mostly a study done to ask why so many adults and older teens are attracted to sanrio, but i think disney applies just as well. It's called a hobby, nothing wrong with it. I think its way more shameful to shame others for their hobbies just because it looks "childish" to you.

I was a kid with undiagnosed autism who couldn't make friends or understand why, and felt so out of place and alone throughout all of my schooling years. I hated being at school and I hated being at home because my mother was obsessed with her image and I would never fit in with what she considered as "normal." We didn't vacation very often, but very few years we would visit my grandparents in California and my grandpa would take my siblings and me to Disneyland for a day. Those are the only times I recall feeling light and unbroken, because Disneyland felt like a different world that had nothing to do with the people back home who made me feel less-than, and for years it was the only place that created positive memories for me. I deeply question Disney as a company and hate the greedy scummy corporate direction they're heading, but to me Disneyland stands apart as a place that made life ok. I haven't visited in years but I would love to go back as an adult and see all of the changes.

I used to find adults who liked kid things (like essentially all of my mothers side of the family who live in Nicaragua) when I was a child cringy but the more I grew up and had conversations with them the more I learned things like they didn’t have the money to have these things as children because they were so poor, they didn’t have the ability to enjoy these childhood staples so now that they have some money and can do with it what they please they’ll buy clothes or teddy bears or anything with these childhood characters. I still buy Eeyore knickknacks once in a while because it was the character that made me feel safe when I was little and going thru trauma. I bought my mom a wallet with Mrs. Jumbo and Dumbo cradling each other because it reminded me of her and I and how we only had each other after my father had abandoned us. Long story short, I don’t sh*t on adults who embrace their inner child as long as they’re not hurting others because idk why they’re doing it and even if it’s cringy, who the hell cares? Life’s too short to deprive yourself of joy because others find it “cringy”.

I mean if these people want to spend their hard earned money on Disney products (or whatever they’re into) why do people have to judge? 🤷‍♀️ When we were growing up it was difficult to get things we wanted, we usually had to earn it the hard way by doing various small jobs that earned you next to nothing to just save up enough for a single CD of an artist we wanted. We had a couple of VHS’s that we were lucky enough to get as Christmas presents and we’d watch these same movies over and over and only when it was our turn to watch TV because we had one TV in the house and we were supposed to be outside until dark. Not saying our childhood was horrible or anything, I wouldn’t trade it, but a lot of people are getting a chance to experience something they feel they missed out on perhaps. People in no way should act rude and entitled to anyone, at any time, for any reason and they should definitely give the right of way to small kids, but if they’re not hurting anyone and it makes them happy, why not?
