I love this show because it portrays Richard III (The Duke of Gloucester) as history and surviving written records of him claims rather than the Tudor propaganda and lies spun about him.
@brontewcat
@brontewcat 4 года назад
While Richard III was not as evil as depicted in Tudor times, he was not the saint some modern authors depict him to be. He was pretty ruthless and had men executed without trial, including one of these boys about 20 years later. The two Princes disappeared under his watch, and there is absolutely no evidence they survived his reign. If they were murdered he most likely responsible. However, it is possible they died of natural causes, and because of the rumours Richard dared not let the public know they had died.

Who cares? What would you say about a WWII movie that had soldiers armed with swords, people using smartphones and driving modern vehicles and Hitler attacking Britain for the sole purpose of marrying the queen mother, all at the same time? you'd say it's nonsense, "It was not this way!" Well, imagine - that's how this production looks to a person who knows a bit about 15th century history and arts.
@keleigh18
@keleigh18 9 лет назад
I'm a history teacher so I obviousley saw the flaws in this production. I know a lot about the Royal family through out history but my comment was clearly just to say this was a drama, not exactly fact based. Look at The Tudors one of the most popular shows and that was filled with mistakes. When its good to watch people don't care. That was the point I was making :)

No. French was the language of the court of Edward III. However I think English was, his heir, Richard II's first language and so it had started to change. However I think it wasn't until Richard III the language of the legal system was changed to English.
@ksodz1397
@ksodz1397 4 года назад
Actually towards the end of Edward III reign English became dominant
@brontewcat
@brontewcat 4 года назад
ŁKS Łódź But not the language of law. It was only in the late 20th century when Latin was not a requirement for law
@ksodz1397
@ksodz1397 4 года назад
@@brontewcat still it's not French. Since statue of pleading (1362) languages of law were English and latin. Presence of latin is nothing strange as it was uniwersal language in middle ages
@brontewcat
@brontewcat 4 года назад
ŁKS Łódź I am not sure that you and I actually disagree. Edward III had a very long reign. When he became king and for most of reign French was the language used. However it is clear it did change during his reign because his grandson’s first language was English. So maybe I was incorrect in saying it was starting to change, and should have said it had changed. French apparently continued to be used by judges/lawyers (though it may not have been exclusively?) because Parliament under Richard III passed legislation to end the last vestiges of the use of French in the legal system. In fact there is something in the deep recesses of my memory about case reports sometimes being written in a mixture of languages until Richard III.

Perhaps we have come to expect too much. At least none of the actors are wearing wrist-watches. Reconstruction, whether for television, film or a novel, must be the devil's own job to retain some degree of accuracy, while keeping the interest of the audience. I believe you are quite right in suggesting that we shouldn't take it as being gospel. After all, it is entertainment. For the real thing, books by experienced historians cannot be beaten, or researching as best you can on your own.

I wish HBO would do a series on the Wars of the Roses, they never struggle to make history accurate and compelling. Its' not a documentary but it's lazy when we have so much information out there.
