QotD: FRANKly, WW deserves much more than a 100% refund. How much material was lost in the process? How much labor was spent across this duration with a faulty machine? How much profit was potentially lost from not putting out merchandise? How many tables were not shipped due to material that didn't pass QC? WW lost much more than the value of the M&T machine.

The fact that the manufacturer didn't have a tech down there with you for troubleshooting this speaks volumes. I used to work with an Industrials supplier and we did setup and consulting for a wide range of manufacturing industries. If a major tool like that was having an issue after install we would have had a tech there overnight, even if we lost money on the deal. When a company buys a major tool like that, the setup fee is usually part of the sell. There is also a downtime calculation for configuration and integration. However, when a brand new tool can't perform to the specs or parameters demanded by the client. You expect a call from Frank.

In the US, if you say you're product can do something and it can't, you best be ready for several lawsuits (there are ways around that for some things, but in this case pretty sure it's clear cut). There has been a substantial amount of lost productivity, product, and material (like the personal computer and metal used to repair the M&T parts) to just get the machine functional. Not working to 100% to spec, just FUNCTIONAL. In this case, I would say there's a good chance you could argue the M&T was sold under false pretenses. It was sold under the promise that it would 1) run to spec, 2) parallel process, 3) do both 1 and 2 at the same time with a variety of accessory bits. It did not run to spec, the software did not function, it _cannot_ parallel process to spec, and at no point did the manufacturer step in to help diagnose ANY of it, let alone offer repair it, or give compensation of any kind for the problem they caused by over promising what their product could do. So yeah, you DEFINITELY deserve a full refund, possibly more if you take in the damages it caused. Had you gone to a competitor it's likely this would not have happened because this is NOT normal business practice to the best of my understanding. Yes problems happen, especially after first install, BUT NORMALLY the selling company helps you fix that, NOT leaving you out to dry once they got the money.

Were I the engineer tasked with solving it, I'd try two approaches. Surefire way would be to make separate floor-mounted arm structures to do the clamping, reuse existing cylinders, and possibly brace the tables/surfaces to minimize deflection. Otherwise, run table-mounted stabilizers/bridge on each side of the clamps to keep the deflection limited to one table section. Neither is elegant or adjustable, but both would allow parallel processing. That's definitely an engineering oversight to not factor in deflection on a beam that's taking a few hundred pounds of force on an 8-foot long beam. For a machine that's supposed to be accurate to ~5thou, it's not acceptable to ignore deflection. Definitely get Frank involved. 6mo late and a month of OT to fix it before being able to run parts is almost certainly a legal matter. From the perspective of an engineer that's done custom designs, on future machines, make sure late fees are in the contract, and that there's startup support that ends when the machine's making chips to spec instead of just making chips. Custom machine design is a different world than the rest of Wyrmwood's machines.
