In 1949, thirteen year old Ronald Hunkeler and his family began having strange experiences, that worsened over time. Eventually, the Maryland family decided to stay with family in St. Louis, Missouri, where they sought the help of Jesuit priests at St. Louis University. Father William Bowden, Father Raymond Bishop, and student William Halloren eventually performed a church-sanctioned exorcism on Ronald. This is the true story of the case that inspired William Peter Blatty to write his famous novel, which became the legendary 1973 film of the same name. This presentation is based of the 1949 diary kept by Father Bishop, as well as a presentation put on by the Missouri Humanities Council and the Landing After Dark featuring Lucas Schwartz’s research on the case.

That novel is excellent. A great read. Blatty uses the word tractable. I’d only heard of intractable up to time of his audiobook. Blatty is a very definitive, recognizable audiobook narrator. ;).

I picked it one year for our October book club read. It was interesting because it didn’t seem nearly as scary as we expected. We concluded that our generation has been so exposed to over the top horror movies, and novels, that it simply didn’t have the affect on us it did 1970s readers or movie goers. The similarities to this case though are undeniable. I believe he actually had access to the daily diary kept by Father Bishop, two copies of which rest in the Vatican archives in Rome.

@@MMorbid thanks for your thoughtful reply. Yes, since the Friedkin film came out (it was kind of a watershed/dam breaking moment) filmdom had its head and has constantly tried to one-up. Leading of course to desensitization. ;(. Btw, thanks for your channel. It is sensational in a good, exceptional way.

Fantastic..!! took me years to go see the movie.. poor kid.. I’ve never heard this story..I’m Lutheran, but I can see why it took a couple seasoned Priests to wrangle those demons..Interesting about the tiers of saints.. you don’t mess with Saint Michael. You look great.. your a good witch.. Happy Halloween 🎃 👻

@@MMorbid I technically converted but never really learned all the stuff. I just like the old prayers and having a Mother figure too. But I don’t know or want to know their extra rules. God is simpler for me. Stay blessed my friend. 🕊🕊🕊

One of my fave scenes is when they send for Merrin (the ultimate exorcist). A young, brother priest runs through the gorgeous fall scenery of Woodstock to fetch him. And of course, every scene with the intense Jason Miller is fab. That chiseled face! Those searing eyes. Father Damien’s guilt over his mother! Heart wrenching. “Demi, Demi”.

Wow, I couldn't turn away after I started watching the video that was a terrifying and interesting story. Thank God the devil was forced out of him, and he was able to go on and have somewhat a normal and successful life with a few great achievements. Great job my sista!❤👍🏽

You know what's interesting about the story that you're telling Madden morbid is that they said hey Aunt Tillie is that you? You want to know something everybody including Madame morbid the Bible makes it clear that when you die first comes death the next will come the judgment Hebrews 9:27. But the Bible also says that there are familiar spirits a familiar Spirit takes the shape of a person who died a long time ago. The Bible calls them demons a familiar spirit is a demon, so when you see ghosts like on Ghost adventures and you think they're talking to ghosts those aren't ghosts. A ghost is something like from Scooby-Doo or something like that what you think say boo which boo's not inherently scary. Anyway to make a long story short as a Christian man I'm going to tell you, the Bible is the authoritative word of God and let me just say this if you believe that God is your savior today please repent and give your life to Christ. And as a Christian man if I sat in a place that was haunted, I know that I would be okay I know that I would be okay because as a Christian man who puts his faith in Christ jesus. I would most likely sit down on the bed. And I would have said I command you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ whom you fear get back to hell where you belong.

I definitely agree that wasn’t Aunt Tillie they were interacting with, but I don’t agree that every spirit is a demon. I have personally had paranormal experiences and they were very positive. One literally turned the lights on for me when I couldn’t find the light switch. This was at Hotel Andaluz in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I didn’t even know it was haunted until that happened to me and I looked it up. I appreciated the help. I felt no negative energy whatsoever.

When I saw the film in first run release I was so scared I didn’t take my coat off and I slept with the lights on for two weeks. Director Friedkin died recently. His list of wives reads like a who’s who: Jeanne Moreau, Kelly Lange, Lesley Anne Downe and Sherry Lansing.
