In 1949, thirteen year old Ronald Hunkeler and his family began having strange experiences, that worsened over time. Eventually, the Maryland family decided to stay with family in St. Louis, Missouri, where they sought the help of Jesuit priests at St. Louis University. Father William Bowden, Father Raymond Bishop, and student William Halloren eventually performed a church-sanctioned exorcism on Ronald. This is the true story of the case that inspired William Peter Blatty to write his famous novel, which became the legendary 1973 film of the same name. This presentation is based of the 1949 diary kept by Father Bishop, as well as a presentation put on by the Missouri Humanities Council and the Landing After Dark featuring Lucas Schwartz’s research on the case.
