The thing that makes the DF64 so great is that the motor is press-fit inside the body. The whole thing is really just a big motor with a set of burrs on top, everything is sturdy, no vibrations, etc. And the plastic catch cup is quite nice, when flipping into a portafilter you can see what you're doing. I have it with the SSP MP burrs and I really don't feel like I need any other grinder in my life anymore.

@@KyleRowsell you mentioned with the SSP multi you get more clarity, and if you want a more rounded flavor to use the SSP high uniformity. Their website says the high uniformity is for medium to dark roasted espresso. What's your advice for light roast single origin espresso shots to get a more rounded flavor? Would it be multi or high uniformity?

It's Friday, Kyle, Lance and James have new videos and my new coffee just arrived. Ain't no better start of the weekend with fresh brew and this three guys! Tbh I would go for DF64 because for now their is option for different burrs which makes difference for someone like me. Also out of the box has decent burrs too. I was a bit disappointed with the Mignon gotta admit. Expected a bit more premium grinder in every way and a best buy without even thinking in that price range.

I've had the DF64 since April 2021 (1st version). Straight out of factory, the grinder was good, but definitely needed a good bit of seasoning. For a few months it kept improving but I still got some inconsistant shots (I do switch between beans, brews and espresso daily, I might not have been precise). Now, after 9 months, I feel like the grinder has definitely settled, and is absolutely great value! As for the build quality, I can definitely confirm that it's solid, still works as good as the first day. Only mod I did was burr alignment, just like you, it was already quite well aligned out of the box, but I just wanted to go the extra step :) So to sum up, no regrets on being an early adopter of this grinder!!!

No experience with either models. I do have the eureka mignon silenzio. Thanks to the 3D printing community you spoke about in this video, I have completely transformed my silenzio into an oro. Well not exactly since the oro comes at a much higher price tag. However, I was able to snag the silenzio for $425. It’s inherently very quiet, relatively low retention, and looks fantastic sitting next to my Gaggia Classic Pro.
@iftrebor6371

In my opinion the most useful mod was the installation of the Mythos Clump crusher. It solves both the retention and the regrinding issue. In fact, it is so good, that I don’t use the bellow anymore. I’ve had to install a 3d printed anti-popcorning funnel to remove the bellow though. For me, espresso was already good out of the box, but filter coffee got way better with seasoning the stock burrs. At first I couldn’t brew a cup of coffee without stalling the filter paper. Now I am really happy with the grinder and sold my Niche.

The most interesting thing for me with the DF64 is that it isn’t a knock off of something else. That Turin made a really useful and well designed grinder and even made updates when The Hoff criticized things. I put the SSP unimodals in mine. I was really surprised with everything from Turin. Glad i stumbled across your channel, only fitting that I saw a DF64 video first because I just took delivery of my own! Let the modding begin… however I had one concern right off the bat. Have you ever seems Aluminum shavings in your grounds? Maybe it’s just burr seasoning, I don’t know, but I had some show up in my grounds when grinding for filter coffee. Quite concerning, but thats what more filters are for. I’m also really noticing the static issue after removing the declumper as well, but I’ll take that over bad retention and a lot more fines.

I just bought the DF64 Gen 2 model :D I was recommended the Mignon as it's quieter but I hear I can put an acoustic dampener. I wish I knew it was a bit loud like the decibel range because I have sensory issues from a brain injury but if I can put it on an acoustic dampening pad or some sort of sound absorption I'll be good :) I am buying the Bambino Plus this weekend after Thanksgiving but as someone who is going from an Aeropress to a full setup I think I will be just fine :) I lean towards the Bambino plus because really it's easier for my mom to use for her coffee needs and we can use it for our tea because I thought of the Gaggia Classic Evo Pro but I don't think my mom would be able to use it as easily as pressing the button. I think I can program the machine for her coffee but I am still debating the machine. I know I can learn a machine because I am quite patient lol but for her it will easier to setup her coffee if I lay everything out for her she just uses a Keurig and pods but she used to have fresh coffee beans and that big ole coffee glass container you see in the diners and stuff 🥹 I'll probably just make her coffee for her as we have breakfast together and she's moving in with me so she can retire and enjoy the sunshine and all that.

Look at your muscles! Kyle, you're looking even more jacked! Tell me about that shirt! I want one like it! Lol. This crazy flat burr frenzy, eh? ;). It really is a huge price difference between the two grinders. Realistically, people who want these grinders are a small subset of the coffee population. People who can afford them, even smaller. Lol. I have half a mind to get the Oro because I was thinking about the Specialita for a while there. I have a decent conical burr grinder presently. Working concurrently with a brilliant flat burr would be awesome. Your initial thorough review of the Oro was brilliant and fair. As a fellow Canadian, I definitely appreciate the take you took on it. :D. Have a wonderful rest of January, Kyle :)! Edit: I forgot to mention, I love see through dosing cups. I thought metal would be better. I switched out my Velocipede (Ottawa!) sampling cup (close to 53 mm for my Barista Express) that's see through for a metal dosing cup. When dosing into a portafilter, it's nice to see if you need to jiggle a little to level out your grinds, you know? Just a little thing I noticed.

Thanks for this video. I have a DF64 myself and can relate to all your comments... I have a question on burrs... I'm interested in upgrading the burrs from the stock ones, but it's hard to make a decision. My 'usage'-pattern: 1 espresso in the morning / a cappuccino on the weekend 1 pour-over in the afternoon Only person drinking coffee in the household... I also have a 1ZPresso that I often use for the pour-overs because I notice that when switching from one setting to the other on the DF there can be quite a bit of difference sometimes... Any thoughts on Multi-purpose vs high uniformity? Thanks and really appreciate the hard work!

I have a df64 and I agree with all your remarks. It definitely is the best grinder for value at its price range even without the mods. With the minor mods/3d printed add ons, its way above its league and even comparable to grinders 2x or 3x its price.
@Aspality
@Aspality 2 года назад
Regarding the declumper, its fine if you just take the top dial off, and use a small sharp knife and cut off some fins in the silicone declumper, or just cut it up completely. No need to go through the pain of taking the entire grinder apart. And another thing to take note of is the silicone sleeves around the springs (example at 12:14) should be flush with the bottom of the spring, so you need to take out both spring and sleeve, make it flush, then put it back in and ensure it's placed properly. Vibration from running the machine might shake the sleeve looser eventually so maybe just check it every few months during a regular clean or something.
@technovelodos
@technovelodos 2 года назад
I have the DF64 and I’m now doubting the advice about ensuring the springs are flush with the bottom of the plastic sleeves. I also read this but I’m not sure science agrees with this “theory”. The spring should provide the same force regardless if the exposed part of the spring is at the top, bottom or half above and half below. So unless someone shows me evidence this makes a difference, I’m filling under the “unfounded claims” category.

I’d love to see a handgrinder or two included in the ultimate single dosing grinder video. Kinu, jmax, or commandante (one for filter and one for espresso specific)? Hand grinders are single dose and for the price could possibly produce better cup quality than some of the expensive powered grinders and provide a better user experience if you don’t mind putting some work in each time you grind. I agree. Glad you noticed the same thing about clarity, I was surprised the stock burrs on DF64 were so much higher clarity than Eurekas. I think Eureka is just more your traditional profile it does actually work better for darker more chocolatey tasting coffees and milky drinks I found. But If you like to notice the specific fruit notes or do a lot of coarser brew methods the DF64 is better especially with either of the SSP burr options. The SSPs even the espresso high uniformity one was cleaner and less bitter than the results from the stock burrs for aeropress I found. But stock df64 would probably still be better than eureka for coarse grinding. Multipurpose unimodals are best for coarse grinding brew methods but I found they do work for espresso well. Haven't noticed any issues with them maybe NOT having a perfect alignment helps with that lol so you get a little less unimodal result. There is the earlier unimodal version which is slightly different known as the brew burr which is supposed to be more difficult to work with.

Just got it for about 450 I agree ain’t that loud but for that price some kind of glass would have been nice instead of plastic Also the grind tuning gear doesn’t feel premium at all, and I dislike the fact you can actually go all the way beyond hearing that the teeth are touching somewhere they shouldn’t in there (that time I got no coffee coming out). That dial really is what is worse, they could have gone with some double precision dial (with one for fine tuning) where we could actually know how fine it is grinding for reference. Now the reference is « that spot when you hear the clinking noise ».. apart from that it looks amazing and is easy to use. Chrome is best.

Every time I see a review for the DF64 I get that "Flat Burr Frenzy" feeling...if I hadn't modded my Sette 30 with the 270 Adjustment Ring and the Brew Burrs, I might consider it, but money is money and I got to get at least a couple years out of the Sette before considering an upgrade. I just saw a good concise 10 year old video comparing the large masticating burrs of commercial grinders, flat burrs, and conical burrs. I was wondering if a roughly $1000 Grindmaster 810S, for example, would be better than messing with all the idiosyncrasies, and mods of the newer home machines, but according to this video, the masticating burrs create more heat and more inconsistent grinds, although I don't know if that's always the case, or if you can still get good coffee, for say, automatic drip coffee, from one of these commercial grinders.

hi kyle, about the range regarding the SSP multipurpose. yes you do lose a bigger range, but when you get the shot right, its obsolutely delicious. From my usage, the range is about 1/2 ~1/4 a mark compare to the stock around ~1 mark (for medium roasted beans). Its so much more harder to build pressure on the MP burrs, even when its right, the shots speeds up very fast towards the end. Hence a machine that can control flow/pressure is nice.

I have a Eureka Atom that I like a lot, but it's not a single doser and not practical to change bn espresso and pourovers/French press settings. So I was thinking of getting a second grinder for pourovers, French press, and an occasional espresso. Which would be better for this purpose, the DF64 at $418 or a Fellow Ode at $299 (currently w v1.1 burrs, w/ release later this year of V2 burrs (~$40 upgrade I'm told by Fellows) allowing for an occasional finer espresso grind)? Btw, I like the small size of the Ode a lot, but I don't want to sacrifice much grind quality just for the grinders footprint and style. Thanks for your opinion Kyle (and others), keep up e great work!

Hey Kyle, interesting video and have been looking at both these grinders. Quick request - I know it’s not strictly a single dose grinder (though arguably you could use it as one) and has a number of differences to these, but any chance you could review the Lelit William PL72 or PL72-P semi commercial grinder? Not many reviews about and I value your opinion, especially as a big Lelit Bianca fan. The William PL72 has 64mm flat burrs, at 470w motor (though apparently a bit noisy) so appears incredible value compared to either of these (if you want a grinder for espresso only that is - I do). Here in the UK you can get it for as little as £340, so less than $400 US! It looks like it’s built like a tank (though it should be if it can be used for commercial work) and is pretty fast to grind and looks very consistent with say only 0.1g max retention from 18-20g. What’s not to love, yet I can’t understand why someone like you hasn’t reviewed it or praised its bargain feature set? Anyway, let me know what you think if you have any experience of it already. Thanks, Steve 👍

@@droidtigger of course not, thanks for the info! I was wondering what RDT meant lol. Currently using a Cuisinart DBM-8 and it's just frustrating with static, and awful grind distribution. @@ChrisTrude Ah I see. It's when you spray a small amount of water on the beans before grinding using a little perfume bottle or the like. You can also use the handle of a teaspoon dipped in water and mix the beans with that. You can try this while also single dosing on your current grinder as mentioned above. If you're only looking for a filter grinder, you can also check out the fellow ode. It's a flat burr single dose grinder that only does filter. It's cheaper, too (not capable of espresso).
