The very first appearance of the Greeks in The Wire. Nick and Ziggy go to visit them to pursue some illegal activity. As usual, Ziggy, being the man he is, makes a dick of himself.
@@BigBadassR forget about international criminals; I wouldn't bring him to a special ed class. Teacher would have a harder time with him than actual sped students.
@Buford Montgomery Chris was nowhere near as dumb as Ziggy! He was a very capable soldier who fucked up because of the drugs. They don't even belong in the same sentence.
@@matthewjohnson3302 Zig was an immature fool who carelessly ran his fucking mouth. Family or not, having an individual like that on the inside results in needless death, incarceration, and substantial loss of revenue (all of which eventually happened). In essence, he was a child in a man's game.
@@matthewjohnson3302 insecure types with something to prove are almost always a liability and can be expected to do some unpredictable stupid type shit
@@DrunkProud7 TIL, there is such a thing called 'greek coffee' and in my brief research, it is shown to be more healthy than regular coffee. It is boiled rather then steeped, and arabica beans are ground to a fine powder, which leads me to believe it is not strained out. People who drank greek coffee instead of regular coffee, were shown to have healthier arteries and hearts.
There was someone even behind the Greek! Someone who pulled ALL the strings. Known on the street only as Fuzzy Dunlop. They say he rose so quickly through the underground ranks because of his connections in the West Baltimore Police Department. Shit runs deep.
sorry for late answer but if you remember his fbi mole was greek so the Greek is from somewhere near, maybe cyprus or macedonia, definitely has greek connections
Before I actually watched this entire series, I read some of the comment sections from these clips and S2 was regarded as a weaker season. It’s my favorite because it’s the top of the food chain here, and Sobotka unknowingly is the guy responsible for all the drugs and hoes in the state. It’s a beautiful story, and a tragic one at that.
I’ve been rewatching The Wire recently, and this scene hits wayyy different since last year (as the old saying goes, “War is God’s way of teaching Geography to Americans.”)
even Ziggy became bearable the 2nd time i watched the series as i couldn't stand him the first time around. this show really shines with multiple viewings, so many little details easily missed the first viewing.
Yes you invest so much effort in getting to know the Barksdale people in S1 it feels a bit like a fuck you when they're largely out the picture in S2 the first time you watch it. Apparently a lot of the black cast were upset at the time because they were under the impression that they were part of a largely black story- telling the gang stories etc that needed to be told. No-one realised how expansive it was going to be at that stage
They had more product than anyone else, Marlo gave them a million bucks just to get their connect (he would pay full price for every drug shipment, on top of the million bucks), and the Greek essentially killed Prop Joe with a sentence.
@83rdox /Yes the greeks were the biggest threat. Do you remember when Clay Davis(politician) ripped off stringer bell for his money? Do you remember Avon gang had to lay low after accidentally shooting a cop? These wouldn't have been a problem for the Greeks! Slim Charles was scared when he was ordered to put a hit on a politician because they needed a high-level assassin for that kind of murder according to Avon. However, IF clay Davis had ripped off the greek mafia, they would had one of their professional killers that worked as cop to assassinate clay Davis without them being tied to the hit! So yeah, I think their ability to kill politicians and make cops look the other way made them more dangerous than street gangs such as Barksdale's crew.
I get where you're coming from, but BAD analogy. Because it turned out the WW were never a big threat, they were nothing more than a red herring there to take up screen time. Smfh.
yeah, but look how classy the Greek handled it. Just moved his stuff and ignored him, knowing it can be fixed later. That is a sign of a mature and secure leader. A less secure guy would have slapped Ziggy around, this guy knew he was no threat.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 most dangerous is Marlo by far beside all the killing even jus the fact he was willing to do anything to get what he wanted he knew no bounds
@@Toeso_Loso yeah you’re right. There’s a big difference between smart and dangerous so if we are talking dangerous then it’s easily Marlo. Sergei turned into a rat and sold out the Greeks. Everyone else on the show would have had him killed in jail but the Greek got away and simply moved on realising it wasn’t worth his time to get Sergei
When you think of international maritime shipping, you think of Greece. Greece has the largest shipping fleet in the world (yes, bigger than the US). Everything about the writing in The Wire series was logical and planned out to the smallest details.
Have you even watched the show!? the "greek" literally says, "and I´m not even greek! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-We3vHhHoHUo.html ??
@@Kanovskiy greeks in ukraine romania bulgaria etcc you dont have to be greek from greece to be a greek in some places in europe i thought it was the same in usa
Being that I’ve traveled to that part of the world I’ll inform you that if someone calls a Ukrainian a Russian out of ignorance then it’s not offensive and they will correct you but it is offensive if a person knows that a person is Ukrainian and you refer to them as a Russian so in ziggy’s situation he wouldn’t be beat he’d just be corrected just like if someone referred to a Trinidadian as a Jamaican the person would correct them I know this for a fact because one of my mechanics is Ukrainian and another of my mechanics is Russian.
It's the irony of the scene. Ziggy demands respect by pushing against the fact he's a punchline. Sergei has the respect but says little that he's a punchline that everyone calls him Boris and thinks he's Russian.
Holy shit! Ziggy was less chill in this scene then Christopher was in The Sopranos when Tony brought him to a meeting with Phil Leotard or whatever his name was while he was high! The Greeks took it way better though!
Completely different though they went harder on Chris cuz he was part of their organization and possibly a liability/threat these guys had a lot of insulation from everyone they dealt with in the show
I'm only 4 episodes into the second season and I already hate Ziggy so fucking much. He's one of those characters you love to hate and relish the opportunity for something bad to happen to them.
When I got to the end of the season, I definitely had a little of sympathy for him than when I started, but he was still a tough character to like. I find that funny because in contrast Frank is probably the most sympathetic bad guy that I've seen in the show so far. I'm starting season 4 tomorrow.
If you ever rewatch it, you'll be able to pick up on his personality traits that get to him to where he is at the end. Frank is definitely the most tragic character of The Wire. Enjoy season 4, that's my personal favourite.
Carlinagressor Tied with Omar the saddest death in my opinion, although Omar had a slight resurrection so to speak at the end of season 5 ;) The drive to meet the greeks is such a brutal scene, we all know whats going to happen (including frank IMO), the greeks receive a call upon his arrival, game over... Hey at least he keeps his hands and head! My personal favourite bit of this season is when Nick is driven to 'talk' to cheese and his posse and you just see from Nicks perspective, a very brief conversation followed by some uzi pointing, I just love how it shows the clashing of 2 vastly different levels of the criminal ladder, come to think of it cheese gets abused a lot :p
@@Micolashcage1 Haha but it was a way to exercise some power after losing that card game. On any other day Marlo prob wouldn’t have killed the guy. Or maybe he would have lol
The "Greeks" was the only true bosses of the series.. Tons of drugs coming in, pimpin hoes, got a secret cop connection on the inside, they was always "10 toes dwn" & "20 steps ahead" of tha game.👏👌
McNulty and Fitz called Koutris (which is an officer) since they found out in the computers data he had connections with George Glekas (a dangerous, greek dealer who did business with Nicky and Ziggy Sobotka). right after the call, Koutris called The Greek to warn him they are in danger since the police investigates Frank Sobotka about his money from drug-dealing, so The Greek knew he had to clean his name out of it and he told Koutris to arrest Sobotka and check out the truck where the hid the drugs. In conclusion, Koutris is the secret cop, and also a great advantage for the greeks.
Yo season 2 is my favorite. There, I said it. Shiiiiiet, dawg, them Sobotka boys grew on me with time. After rewatching the show and shit, I realize that Season 2 is fucking insane. Its my favorite, aint no thang.
Season 2 was the shit really my fav, I didnt care much for the show after Season 3 when all the players Avon, Stringer gone. Season 4,5 sucked with all the politics and Marlo was boring as fuck
+planetmurkury You don't seem to know how to treat with dangerous people in an illegal business, which is understandable. You don't want to look weak, or they might kill you just because you know about them. What you perceive as arrogance, an alpha male sees as strength and calm.
T is on a different level, he doesn't sell h, it's to risky. And no drugs on those garbage routes. He doesn't care if you're working with wal-mart either.
I once had an idea for a movie that involved the Greek mafia! The movie wasn't completely about the Greek mob but they played a key part of the film's plot! They should make more movies and shows about the Greek crime family!
Clearly you didn't watch the wire, or didn't pay very close attention. None of them are Greek. Sergei is Ukrainian, and the others are probably from other former USSR states.
Spiros and The Greek were great characters, looked unassuming but were probably the biggest threat in the entire show. They outlasted everyone and were still on top at the end.
@@brownpunk1794 I wish they had been incorporated into the story more after Season 2, a lot of people think Season 2 is the weakest but it’s actually my favourite along with Season 4
That bit with Sergei getting angry about being called Russian hits differently now. Back then Ukrainians were on sight with Russians. Now it’s gotta be some league of legends type shit.
Wow! I totally forgot Spiros barely had an accent in his first few scenes of the show. Then he magically had a super thick accent for the rest of the series. LOL
They are Polish in name only. By the time the 1st generation is born in the States, they start forgetting every about the old life. I have nieces and nephews who were born in the US and can't point on a globe where their parents came from.
@ElScotto 'the Greeks' were multinational. I'm sure the writers intentionally made them like that as a comment. Russian, Ukrainian, Israeli, Armenian and Greek
Spiros and the Greek were both Greek. They texted in Greek, read Greek newspapers, listened to Greek music, carried Greek worry beads, drank Ouzo, played Komboloi, called people Malaka, were informants for a Greek FBI agent. When he said "I'm not even Greek" that was just a euphemism.
@@sm0keyMcP0t420 How is that a euphemism though? I read a comment once that said Greek-Americans were not too happy with a crime stereotype and that’s why the writers added in that “and I’m not even Greek” line. Either way, I think the line adds a lot to his already elusive character.
I wonder if Nick briefed Ziggy before walking in to stfu? I know it's a acting, but I assume he did. Hence the way Nick looked @him when he opened his mouth.
5 years late, but what I hear is "...he's an L Series, so he's not getting any hours." Probably some sort of low ranking at the docks, and all the hours go to those with more seniority.
Double G was calling Ziggy a malaka from the rip. Another thing I noticed is that if you are a nobody, then you sit by the bar. First Ziggy, then Snoop when Marlo was holding court. Nick and Chris Partlow sat at the table.
Ziggy must have been the most hated character that everyone wanted to beat the living shit out of on a daily basis more than anyone else in the history of any tv series. Ever. The writers did such a good job making that guy so ridiculously despicable. He is the ultimate idiot and loser. Every second of his life was made to be an irritating burden. Great writing, great casting.
Thomas Sarigiannidis maybe you missed it, the old "greek" shows all the signs of actually being a jew ... he even makes a reference to a tribe at some point.
It's highly unbelievable to me that he would spend whatever screen time he has pretending to be Greek, along with his sidekick, incidentally both having Greek accents at the same time. The idea of him being anything other than Greek, at least culturally, is a highly unrealistic theory, all things considered.
This season showed the other side of Baltimore that doesn't get shown. The other crimes that are major money makers. People always think drugs when they hear Baltimore only because people in other areas of crime are so much more low key.
Streets are unforgiving man. They knew he was gonna kill Joe man. They had muscle and more power but they did not control who dies in the hood every second. Marlo was intent on killing Joe so they had no other option.
'The Greek' probably thinks that Ziggy sounds like his spolit teenage grandson back home in Southern Russia, Ukraine, Georgia etc, or living in Cyprus, Switzerland or wherever.
