Had nothing to do with identity politics you crybaby. It just utterly piss poor adapting. As someone reading the book it did borrow more from the books this season but did it badly

Pretty sure he likely was very frustrated hence why he left and wanted to rewrite whole episodes because they constantly neglected Geralt deep character and wit. The stuff we got was stuff we only could get because he pushed through which made Geralt likeable to the audience because it was him. Liam Hemsworth just won’t have the clout so be just furniture 😂
Its weird how Geralt keeps forgetting to drink his potions in this show, despite knowing he is about to have a major fight against one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence
I wish Henry good luck with the Warhammer 40k show. Since he is an executive producer, I hope he doesn't let any narcissistic activist get their grubby hands on the show and butcher it like these people did with the Witcher. In a more sane world, he would have been a mega-star by now.
@@TheAngriestReptileAlive better said to give everyone's screentime, from a faction to the none-important subfactions like abhumans and maybe rough human empires.

Hopefully the Hollywood strike lasts long enough for every single one of the pathetic excuses for creatives to have been either weeded out for their greed and lack of talent or until AI can replace the pathetic worthless brains of what is now called humanity. A computer could adapt an already written book series better than these idealogue driven wastes of oxygen. The worst part is those same idealogues will say you shouldnt drive a car to combat climate change when if they stopped breathing it would be far better for "climate change" and the human race as a whole.
Believe me when I say that as a book fan this is almost as if someone would have take a huge dump on you child. Anger is just the icebergs tip of how I feel of this adaptation. They had everything. A good bookseries, a lead actor who gives a fuck about the product, countless advisors and enough money to buy a third world country. Jet they totally and absolutely teared the sheer fabric of the source material down. And where are we now?
Its like all they had to do to put out a decent show was adapt the source material but they decided to fill it with complete nonsense and ruin the whole thing for everyone
Just stop! You know there has been a culture take over by force in the industry. They are operating the business in the direction they want us to go in. This is the new normal they are forcing us to live in. Its not gonna stop its only gonna get worse. Dont burn brain cells being angry at their product. Dont be surprised by their actions and dont expect anyrhing from them. If your favorite fairy tale is the egg and the wolf and you find out they are doing an adaptation on it, dont you dare watch it. They will disappoint you and wipe their ass with your favorite story. Cling to the past and enjoy the content we already have.
In books - Vilgefortz was portrayed as a witcher - but without any morals. Much stronger (probably the strongest person/creature in the world) than witcher or anyone. They even had a similar past - both were born from a mage mother (and that was super rare). Both are skilled with weapons and magic (Vilgefortz was a warrior for a long time before he decided to practice his natural talent). Both smart and strong-willed. When Geralt tried to recall what mistakes he made when he was fighting against Vilgefortz - he understood that he did none. Vilgefortz just outclassed him. Vilgefortz is someone that Geralt could become - but chose not to. And now please recall how Vilgefortz was portrayed in S01E08 - a complete emotional male idiot, who can't fight at all.
I remember Vilgefortz lost his crucial fight (with Cahir?) in season 1 because he didn't have enough mana to conjure another dagger. Then he got kicked off a cliff
@@nymphey The idiotic writers would tell you.. "...oohhh yeah but no, he was holding back. Just like he tells Geralt, it was all an act. Purposefully holding his true power back " Such an abomination of a show
I had someone who works as a writer in Hollywood explain to me how this happens. Studios won't agree to fund a new, unheard of, untested show or movie. They want to know that it already has an audience, so if it isn't an already existing IP, a book, a movie that you've reimagined, or a game, they won't even look at it. They think none will watch it and it will be a waste of money. So, writers have come up with a way around that. They have an idea for a show. Let's say, something like Game of Thrones, but with women being the leads and heroes. (Because right now, social justice, strong women, and equality are huge things with the modern, younger writers.) So, their show is all about magic and monsters and women fighting and saving the day. No studio would greenlight this, so what they do is look for an already existing IP that's a bit fringe and where the creator isn't too involved. (With Game of Thrones, George Martin was writing in, so he wouldn't let you just kidnap the IP.) So, let's go with books that were popular enough to become a game with a bit of a following, but not so popular that everyone knows and loves it. The Witcher is perfect. Now you go to the studio and show them it has a fanbase and with some tweaks, it will be very popular. They are looking for shows that can compete on a Game of Thrones level and that have an already existing fanbase, so they'll likely agree. Now you can take *your* show idea and fit this IP over it like a skin costume. You take the IP characters, like Yen, and replace them with your characters. You use the basic framework and little by little, season by season, you move the show from the IP to your show idea. Yeah, you had to use their names and storylines at first, but you got it greenlit. And if the fans get upset, you call them names and say they just don't like strong women and gay people. Apparently, this happens all the time, as studios won't greenlight original material because they think it won't be watched when it competes with already popular IPs. I think the biggest problem with The Witcher was that Henry fought back. Actors aren't usually invested in the IP and they do what they are told. Henry was a fan and promised to fight for the IP. People might not have noticed all this if Henry hadn't stood up to them and then if they hadn't tried to malign him when he left. I'm not sure how to fix this. Studio heads are afraid of risking money on an untested idea. Modern writers have ideas and agendas and they cannot write the IPs they are kidnapping. There just seems to be a huge disconnect between what audiences really want and what Hollywood is willing to create.
Not sticking to original story and source material - that I can somewhat understand in context of your comment. But in my opinion what killed this series is just bad writing. Like this video states, the action is all over the place, pacing is non existant, and logic is long gone. I haven't read the book but I certanly despise this serie. :D
I think there's a piece to the puzzle missing. Huge studios like Disney have been willing to throw away billions on projects they know will fail due to wokeness.
@@joshuakimmich9536 - I think you make a good point. I think the studios are very wrong in their ideas. I think people want new stories and if you bring an IP from a book or game, fans want it to be what they expect. I think current writers are terrible at the job. They think it's their job to teach us a lesson and they push their own world views. I think if they wrote their own original stories, they would be awful. But, there could be an audience for it. If they wrote the story of a girl who discovers her magic and has to fight evil in a medieval setting with her powerful witch mentor, I'm sure there would be fans. I think studio heads have no idea what they are greenlighting and don't keep a watch to see if it's being well executed. If the studio executive who greenlighted the Witcher was a fan, he'd have noticed if the show wasn't at all like the books. But, they are so far removed from the fans that they fail us.
Milva isn’t a dryad, she’s a human and she is in the books, they do however make her extremely annoying in the show for some reason. She’s actually likable in the books so don’t understand why they changed how she acts.
they manage to do that with every female character from the books. Every female character in the book is a "strong independent woman" but they are written well with female insecurities and emotions, but they are all very formidable in their own way. Milva in particular is very formidable and dangerous, but in the book she lets her bow do the talking. In show she literally won't shut up and her cockiness feels very unearned
@@curiousguyontheinternet9023 I’m trying not to think about that, the reason I say Angouleme is because she is ripe for the writers to make her an insufferable bitch
I was so looking forward to season 4 where Mary Poppins arrives from the future in her Delorian. It was supposed to be a really nice musical and everything.
one very important thing to note when Triss finds Geralt on the beach - what happens is - Trish, in a few seconds, takes Geralt to Brokolin forest for them to heal him, they can't heal him, Yennefer comes there in a few seconds, heals him, leaves immediately. so. why couldn't Triss just. take him to Yennefer? leave him on the beach and tell Yennefer? How long did this trip even take for her to be immediately back without even a mention or worried thought about it after?
9:46 That scene is in the books, he knows it's not Ciri but keeps her because he needs a legitimate ruler to hold Cintra without constant rebellions in a already stressed war campaign, and to stop the other noble houses offering marriage proposals at him. Didn't watch S3 though so I bet they glossed those details as unimportant.
Yeah. Thing is: None of this nuance is explained or hinted at AT ALL in the whole 3 seasons, so viewers not privy to the original material would end up confused anyway. Honestly, it's like the script was written by a 10-year-old middle-schooler. And that's pushing it.
Just finished ep 8 just furious as hell and immediately came to RU-vid to try and find something I could resonate with and so glad I found this. This is seriously so f*cking hilarious and so spot on, well done. 😂😂
Vilgefortz did gravely injure Geralt in the books. Broke his hip and nearly killed him. Vilgefortz also melted Regis. Some of the mages are far more powerful in the books than they are in the show. And yes, in order to heal Geralt, Triss had to take him to see the druids. But there was also a whole slew of story missing from the show that was in the book. So even though the show got the beats right with the fight between Vilgefortz and Geralt, they still managed to hugely eff it up.
I haven't read the book but i did know that regis fights against vilgefortz alongside geralt because its mentioned in the games. I wanted to know this: was regis introduced after this fight in the books? or they just didn't show him at all in the adaptations?
A lot of the fault lies with the studios themselves, who give writers (who are mostly naive amatures) about two weeks and a bag of peanuts to pen a sprawling fantasy epic.
From what I heard, Season 4 of the Witcher is on 'indefinite hiatus' or something similar to that. They say it's because of the writer's strike, but a lot of people believe that Hollywood is using the writer's strike as an excuse to cancel terrible movies that were greenlit years ago by very dumb people (who Hollywood is also trying to get rid of using the writer's strike as a reason) so that they won't take more massive flops, and the damage it will do to brands and their company wallets.
Maybe it's just studios coping, but WB said they saved money because of the strike because alot of shows (and upcoming shows) are thrown to the chopping block.
I was done after season 2. Netflix could have had another Games of Thrones instead they produce a dumpster fire of manure. I couldn't agree more with your analysis. Excellent vid.
People who read the books would know that many scenes in the 2nd half of the season are actually pretty close to the books and there are good reasons for them being there. That being said, there was a lot of lazy writing, immersion breaking casting choices and the weird focus on side characters like Fringilla and Francesca as well as stupid and unnecessary deviations from the source material.
The Thanedd Coup was so good in the books. Plans within plans, intrigues within intrigues and massive failures born out of arrogance. The introduction of Milva also had a lot of sense in the original and her role... well, let's say she wasn't there to make Geralt look bad. Her story was both great and tragic.
I just finished Time of Contempt about 2 months ago (currently on Tower of Swallow) and mannnnnn when I say I didn't see it coming at all and loved how subtle it was, that arc alone made it my favorite book so far. But gaaawhhhhdayum this show is something else😂
yeah, if you really think about it, in the Books Geralt more or less always has at least one girlboss at a time on his team, but they are not there to take away his spotlight, but to be a cool part of his travelling group and a badass fighter.
In general the whole Travel group of geralt feels like more the Fellowship from lord of the Rings than this stupid bullshit in this show. Its been a minute since I read the books, but Geralt, Dandelion, Zoltan, Cahir, Regis and Milva were just such a power team.
It was amazing that amongst the battle scenes where characters were getting slaughtered left and right, other characters seem to take extra time to cry and express their feelings in the middle of the battle raging all around them, and not get vaporized by magic, sliced to pieces, or get arrows in their back.
I feel like shitting on this story has become a trend lol granted it’s not EXACTLY like the books (which is totally expected) but this last season was the most book accurate so far (to me anyway) I feel it’s a combination of Cavill leaving and the show runner showing disrespect for the source material that’s just made everyone want to tear this show apart regardless of if they followed the books well enough or not… at this point it’s dead no matter what they do it seems….I personally didn’t think it was THAT bad…I found myself going “And then this happens in the books…” and it’d happen lol so they definitely did better following A Time of Contempt…sad to see it turn out like this tho…I feel like the show is Geralt and crew at the end of Lady of the Lake and everyone is the town of Rivia lol and the pitchfork is coming…
@@chasealan2166 yh these guys are shitting a bit too much. Season 1 was alright, overly complicated. Season 2... dont really see the importance of it much. Season 3 pretty source accurate and good, esp part 2. A lot of these criticisms aren't the END of the world for part 2 at least. Whats sad is how Cavill is leaving. Some stories inserted for no reason- like with Radovid and Jaskier.
@@idreeskhan8885 Yes, season 2 was a complete mess, and season 3 is definitely more book accurate, although it changed a lot and not in a good way. Ciri running back to the tower, killing Rience, or Radovid and Jaskier just why?
I thought it was hilarious that Ciri was missing and noone knew she was missing and noone knew where she was yet Yennefer, Geralt and Reince all teleported to her in the matter of a few minutes. This show is hilariously bad
Lydia has a lot more depth, so many of the characters are flattened. Rience has a way more satisfying death. I am reading the book so could see they did borrow more from the books this season but just did it worse and have really taking a lot of the depth out.
No, not every ruler in this show is an idiot... Only the male rulers... Now, compare this to a scene from the books when Emhyr orders several people to be arrested and brought to trial for treason and one of the people he mentions is Kahir. And Kahir's father is in the room when Emhyr says that, but doesn't dare to say a thing. Then Emhyr turns to him and says smth like "Don't worry, if Kahir's failure turns out to be because of his incompetence or stupidity rather than treason, he will not be tortured. I will simply have him decapitated, so you needn't worry"... Now compare this to Emhyr in the show who simply does impersonations of Cercei Lannister...
Just to name some of the many stupid moments this season: - Geralt just leaves the room when Dijkstra imprisons all mages without telling Tissaia that Vilgefortz is the traitor - Geralt doesn't kill Rience the first time, but is deus ex machina the second time - Yennefer leaves and loses Ciri to save Tissaia only for Tissaia to kill herself - annoying elf queen turns out to be the most overpowered mage and won't die from fire blast by Stregobor - "Mastermind" Dijkstra, an old man, tries to kill Geralt, a strong superhuman, in a fight 1:1 - Cahir changes his mind about kidnapping Ciri with no build-up... yet he won't tell her that Emhyr is her father - Ciri, Yen and Geralt walk around without disguise, attend festivities and marketplaces
Stregobor's arc is so oddly satisfying. Scooby-doo mystery reveal "It was old-man Stregobor!" culminating in him saving the day by sacrificing himself to tap into fire magic to satisfy his "old man racism".
Cant lie Stregobor redemption arc was the only thing i liked in this season and it only got 10 seconds of screentime and him suicide-surrouding everyone with fire magic
I thought it was just me not being able to link all the stuff but in retrospektive its realy pretty random how characters are placed and how they interact
4:35 Ahahahahaha. I don't even know who either of those characters are and this is the funniest thing all week. He wants "her" to penetrate him with xir "sword".
Heroic Send-off = killing a bunch of guys for stealing a kid's toy. Though I think the real crime here is somehow trying to get us to believe the black guy is the father of the child who, if of mixed race, certainly didn't include any African in the recipe. 🤷♂️ These people have no idea what adversity is, how a person develops character through encountering and overcoming it, or what "heroic" means in ANY sense of the word (other than ironic).
So Henry Cavill is "difficult to work with" they say? Yeah well I think if you begin to permanently damage a person's career by forcing them to do awful work that stinks then anyone in that position would push back. No, I think it's the employer who's difficult to work with.
Cavils last hurrah was getting his ass beat, looking like a lunatic for killing all those men in the border and spending half of the later season on the bed
Actually, many events from this season were indeed in the books. But because bad writing Netflix could neatly bring it down to some fighting, some screaming and swearing and deus ex machina actions. It really makes you think, how is that possible that these idiots (writers & showrunner) even have a jib in the first place. And no one seems to control it for 3 seasons straight. After all it costs hell tone of money, which is not redeemed
The show sells that “the most accurate to books” -Killing off Rience, he is not only satisfying to be killed by Ciri, but also an outstanding and entertaining villain to read. “I, Rience, Will teach you pain with these hands, these fingers” What a Joke -Filavandrel is the pathetic one, from what I know, he’s not dead yet, but it’s fine if there’s any good on writing or development before his end, but no he just standing there and die like an extra. -Keira Metz from books is badass, I love this the most, she is the one who tell how shit went down in the Garstang to Geralt and the readers in her perspective, from fighting amidst the chaos to get hurled by Terranova through the window then drop on Geralt, but wtf in this one, she only do a prep talk then everyone ready to go… - Lydia is tragic one, she die because of love she had in Vilgefortz, trying to buy the time for Vilgefortz to calling signal to “Squirrel” Sco’iatel Elves army and Rience to initiate the attack, but in this, she just worthless, dying like nothing. - Vilgefortz seems a bit better on this pile of garbage, Mahesh Jadu can deliver another good version of Vilgefortz, that staff swapping magic thing while do the fight is cool, but that’s it. - Fringilla looks like a drunk Janitor. - The show presents about diversity, but gives Stregobor who is racist and hates elves a heroic death, personally, I love this guy now lol .- Geralt Heroic Send Off?? More like Geralt pathetic Fu*k Off, fight a bunch of thugs in Nilfgaardian patrol armor is NOT heroic!!! Ps. Ciri is not fight that crab monster with rock, 6:58 she rips one of their armor plate and kill them, it far worse.
I really want to see a video of just the parts with Cavill in them. The least I feel I can do out of respect for his efforts in defending the work is give him that. But in the end, I'm sure he'd understand just not watching it at all and being there to support his future projects. He's simply one of us.
honestly if I was making a witcher series I wouldnt base it on the main series but follow an unnamed witcher as he goes around fighting monstures and helping people kinda like how supernatural was in its first seasons, I feel like that should have been the wither series a show that u dont need to over think to much with a simple a premise of hunting monsters and if they want they can make a wither movie series and have it based on the main series
The arms on that female archer had me laughing my tits off. Her arms are that of a child and her shoulders too, no way she could draw any bow, let alone lose 3 arrows.
It'll be great to see Henry on a podcast (not interview) where he can just frankly let out his frustration and let the public know what goes on behind the screen.
Well, to be fair, Alzur's Thunder - the spell that Thissaia cast, is by the lore one of the most powerfull and most difficult spells to cast, and Vilgefortz did in fact easilly defeated Geralt in the books. That being said show is abbysmal, and the saddest part of it is that noone will touch that IP (in TV/Movies) for years now...
Geralt in the Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Superhuman unstoppable killing machine taking hits from Dragons like its nothing. Geralt in Netflix Witcher Season 3: looses to a mage in a swordfight, almost gets oneshot by Aard.
I never gave a fuck about Henry Cavill or his work as Superman etc. Superhero movies were never my thing. I do love Witcher lore though. That man earned my respect and I am for sure going to follow what he does from here on out. He did legendary work and for sure sticks like a sore thumb in the show, but in the best way possible.
I said the same thing about the underwater thing. You gotta beat up a good ways away from the water. But somehow the next scene, hes like in the middle of the water. 😂 So bad
Watched part 2 last night. Glad I'm using someone else's netflix. To be fair, they told us very clearly in season one what they were doing when they made wrinkly ballbag armour. Ironic really, that the whole thing smells like a yeasty fish market full of cats.
All I needed to get the general idea of this show was one screenshot of Yennefer looking like a time traveler next to Ciri wearing what looks like clothes she bought at H&M
Honestly, you are more patient than me, i stopped watching this piece of craps a little after third parts of season 2. Finally after reading your review, you confirm my impressions about the series. Unfortunately, I think Netflix's Witcher series is dead.
Why are there so many Africans in this? It looks like medieval northern Europe. And there definitely would not be a mixed race couple like in rhe scene where the soldier takes the girl's toy.
