Me, literally yesterday: Man I need to do a deep dive into Karen's character since I'm planning on her being a relatively big part of this upcoming fanfic I'm working on CuCu: I'm about to make this man's entire career

Whether you agree or disagree with what Karen did is irrelevant. She made her choice and had to live with it. How it affected her children and husband and parents is another matter. I understand Sean’s pain toward his mother; imagine how he must have felt with her leaving. I’m sure he must have thought that he had done something wrong to cause her to just walk away. Daniel was just a baby, but growing up I’m sure he noticed things about her or heard things about her from his Dad and brother. I’m sure he wanted to know more about her, but it was too painful for his Dad and brother to talk about. You see that when they found Karen’s letter, how Daniel was so excited and wanted to contact her right away. Sean on the other hand was not, his pain and hurt blocked his vision, and the same can be said towards Clair. All I can say is, I’d give anything to see my Mom again. I think Dontnod put it right with the ending song from “Cascadeur” of Ep4 titled “meaning”. The lyrics go: “someday you’ll understand the meaning of my life; But, someday you'll understand, the meaning of these words, but someday you’ll understand the meaning of your life”.

I love this aHh Karen is definitely one of the most interesting characters in lis2 While I don't see her as a great mother, I think she's a good person at heart and a good character I still can't totally forgive her but I see why she did what she did and i think she redeemed herself Also i think she perfectly represents the theme of freedom in this game Freedom always comes at a big cost and Life is strange 2 is all about that

Nice rendition of Karen's story, though I think backstory can also be interpreted differently based on the documents Sean finds. Insightful how you evaluated her actions from different perspectives at the end. I wonder if Dan can convince Karen to meet up with them again, particularly in Blood Brothers and Lone Wolf.

Also one of these days I'll be able to watch a Life is Strange 2 video without crying. Today is not that day.

Fantastic video! Love this analysis of one of the most compelling and well-developed characters in the game.

I do personally believe that karen would have felt and known if she had stayed and the negative effect it would have had on her as well as the rest of her family. Karen is someone as demonstrated though her action in the series deep down does have a kind and caring nature for those she cares about. I wonder if she weighed how the implications staying and the negative impact it would have on her and thus reflect on others would have. The resentment she would feel been trapped in a situation she was unhappy with the two polar opposites of caring for her family, but that desire to be free, but overall the feeling that feeling of the situation you are in isn't right it's crippling hopeless and you can't escape. I feel both in a negative and a positive way that she felt staying would have hurt her family more than helped, that if left to stay she'd become more imbittered loose herself and reflect it on them. A justification that is a very point to consider and valid but also one that can very easily to kid ourseleves that it would be that simple and black and white in a morally grey complicated area.

I forgive, nothing changed what she did but she took responsibility and never stopped caring for her kids even willing to go to jail for them

Here's my answer: I, the player, forgive Karen but I'd never expect Sean or Daniel to forgive her. Karen has or at least is trying to change, to be in her kids life again. She helps Sean get Daniel out, Provides them shelter at the away town and even outs herself to the police so they can flee to Mexico. Despite this however she still abandoned her family. She left Esteban and Sean with the grief of losing her and picking up the pieces of a broken family and made Daniel feel like she left because of him. To be a good mom you need to make sacrifices, you need to put your dreams on hold for your kids but Karen instead ran away from her problems and left her husband to raise two kids alone. Can she be forgiven? Yes. Should she be forgiven? No. I feel it's easier for us as the player to forgive Karen since she sent the letter to her parents and helped us in episodes 4-5. But in Sean's shoes, she was gone for almost half his life when she came back into it and did the bare minimum as a parent. Mostly, It depends on your view I feel

Hi Cucu. Thank you for the excellent analysis of this much-maligned character. While she deserves every bit of Sean's anger, she is also a victim of society's expectation demanding her to be a mother even though she never wanted this role. She is an amazing multi-layered character and certainly deserves this Cucu special. Is Finn next? :)

I dont think I have enough moral high ground to judge her. But her choice to fight with the cult proved she has bravery in her, if only she would have some more,(and earlier) then who knows,Maybe Esteban would forgive her.

She’s a very interesting character. Even though what she did was horrible in leaving her family and severing all contact from her ex-husband and kids, some of what she says does ring true. We do only get one life and having a life means that we will have some regrets. Whether it’s missing out on things we desire or making choices we don’t necessarily agree with. Another aspect of Karen is that it seems that society (and especially her parents) told her that you HAVE TO get married, have kids and have a simple domesticated life. But she pushed back and said no. At the end of the day, it’s our life and life can be unfair, unpredictable and even strange.

I love Karen and relate very much to her desire to escape her family and do her own thing. As far as the question of her finding something different or better, I think she needed something different. She didn’t see herself as superior to social mores or her family, it’s that she never felt she was allowed to explore what she truly wanted after settling down with Esteban. “Making your own choices doesn’t mean you can never fool yourself” basically means sometimes you think you want something because it’s what your parents wanted for you, only to grow up and find out it’s not who you are. I also think between her old pen pal she moved in with, Maggie, Joanne, and just her overall vibe, it’s heavily implied Karen is queer and wanted to explore that side of herself too. I wouldn’t doubt that was one of the primary reasons she ran off. The way she talks about Esteban, it’s almost like he was an old best friend rather than someone she was ever genuinely in love with.

Seems to be this Karen from LIS sequel's far of a likable character herself but much better Karen herself unlike as for most Karens we've been having reality our self but besides that, I really appreciate you took your time from create this video and motivation as well, love everything you involve for this video. You and I on a same chapter as for Karen Reynolds since she seems to be an intelligent character how far it went and ended from LIS2, still love DONTNOD Entertainment from all the changes they did for this game their self. Even tho most diehard LIS fans despite LIS2 their self because Chloe and Maxine aren't involve, which is, quite easily annoying but LIS2's already my fave game along with prequel game over the first game by my opinion instead not my intelligent to tell gamers which Life Is Strange games they shall be a fan of. I know some people were disappointed with Karen's reasons on why she left and so was I a little bit but I will say this leaving her family may have been selfish but a least she left her boys with someone who really cared about them my point is she didn't do anything illegal like leaving them alone with no one to take care of them she may be a selfish mother but she's not an evil mother also I would like a prequel game that focuses on estebans's and karen's relationship what do you think.

You know Karen is gay right? like thats why she left, to understand her gay identity without having to conform to regular society, That artist Joan, with cancer . is her lover (who also comes off a bit like a hippy Claire, but that's a different conversation) and the woman who Brough her there.
