Random question: why don’t they have computers? And random spoiler: I did continue watching through the third season thus far. Some unexpected stuff happens and one of my predictions comes true. This is a good show. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes, honestly the first two seasons. It still all makes sense even as the picture gets bigger. Enjoy!

Still the best tv series ever made. If it had been a book first, it would have won a Nobel prize.

It basically WAS a book first. So many characters and situations are thinly disguised versions of the real life versions described in David Simon's epic nonfiction book Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets. Some aren't even disguised, like Detective Sergeant Jay Landsman, who was a Baltimore homicide detective, appears on the show as a named character and also the real life Jay Landsman appears as a different character. He was also the inspiration for the character Detective John Munch, played by Richard Belzer who first appeared in the show Homicide: Life On The Street. Since then Detective Munch has been a character in an insane number of crossover shows from the Law and Order franchise to the X - Files to the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to Sesame Street and even cameos on The Wire. So many real life Baltimore cops, criminals and politicians appeared on this show, including former Mayor Kurt Schmoke, former Police Chief (and felon) Ed Norris, former drug dealer Melvin Williams who was brought down by a wiretap investigation into his multiple hundred million dollar drug empire linked him to many murders. The character Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, contract murderer, was played by actor Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, who in real life was convicted of murder at age 14 (and who went back to prison on drugs charges after the show's run.) Many minor roles are played by locals, which is why their accents are authentic. It's hard to call this show fictional. It's basically heightened reality.

The no computers thing was pretty common in early 2000s in big bureaucratic orgs, especially ones dominated by old guys. There wasn't a push to modernise to those 'nerdy' things, and even if there was budgets were tight and they had other stuff they would prioritise ahead of admin stuff. Their forms and systems, and training in filling in those forms and those systems, were deeply ingrained. Imagine training an army of Hercs on computers, they didn't get much schooling, if any, on that stuff. Even well funded big forces like the NYPD were having articles written about their need to computerized when this came out.

This is, without a doubt, the best tv show ever made. I've seen all five seasons 16 times now. And every time I rewatch it, I discover new things that blow my mind in terms of storytelling, subtle callbacks, visual details, etc. Like that scene from the first episode when Wee-Bey and D'Angelo get out of the car to talk. Above Wee-Bey, the neon sign says "BEEF", because he's the muscle in the Barksdale crew. Above D'Angelo, the neon sign says "CHICKEN", hinting at the fact that he's not fit or fierce enough for this world of crime. The show is filled with things like this, and it shows how much thoughts and work went into every single detail of this masterpiece. I highly recommend the (spoiler-free) youtube video called "Why The Wire is one of the Most Brilliant TV Shows Ever". Here's a quote from the video: "The Wire doesn't try to grab and keep your attention. It requires it. But if you give it your attention, it will reward you."

RU-vid needs more reactions like this. I hope to see you finish it. In retrospect, seasons 1 & 2 hold up and are good primers for seasons 3 -5. Some good writting on this show. 🖖🏿

This show gets really deep. It’s about a lot more than just a drug detail taking down a drug organization. But you’ll find that out the more seasons you cover.

One of my favorite shows, it's just a crime drama, it gives a good look at the city of Baltimore and gives insight into how and why systems are broken within the city and all over the country.

Re: Computers; they have computers at this time but there are a few reasons why they dont all use em: a) youll see this department is barely scraping funds together for even basic stuff, so theres a lack of willingness to devote resources to that b) a lot of the force, including many higher ups at this time were not fluent in computer use, to say the least. so there's still some attitude of "who needs a computer anyway" in the mix Thats just my read though, I'm not necessarily in the know. Mostly speculating. Hope you keep enjoying this gold-standard show!

"Is he gonna leave the group gang thing that his uncle run?" Hearing you use the word 'gang' made me realize that they don't really use that word in the show. I remember hearing 'crew' or 'Barksdale's people' but never 'gang'.
@bothi00
@bothi00 3 года назад
seems deliberate. either because it's simply colloquially accurate or Simon was deliberately trying to get us to draw comparisons between how the Barksdale crew as an organisation (and by extension gangs in general) and how many of our institutions and companies are run.

great reaction! every reactor I've seen swears d'angelo's gonna be killed. this show is as real as it gets. if they were gonna kill him, they'd have done it while he was locked up. not on the outside where it'll bring even more police attention. keep it up!
