As a person who was point out as cold in my teenage years, i really feel for Cristina. Being critique for having an introvert personality or being shy and mistakenly being point out as "cold" really afects you, because you don't know how to act anymore. It doesn't help just makes you feel the worst about yourself.

Me too. From age 11 I became so shy and wouldn’t talk so much. At school the teachers would highlight that in my annual reports. They’d mention about me being alone, speaking in monosyllables much more than my academic achievements. My mum was disappointed to hear this. I was under pressure to be like everyone else. I was constantly compared to other kids who were out going. I’d be pressured to “talk more.” Talk about what? I didn’t want to talk. I wanted read, write, achieve and get through life peacefully. Years later I brought this up and confronted everyone about how they treated me in those days.

I understand the feeling Keenyah was experiencing when looking back at the photoshoot. I found pictures of me from ages 8-12 and then some from 13 and up. For as long as I can remember, people have commented on my weight. I was 12 the year I stopped wearing color and started hiding my body and developed unhealthy coping mechanisms that included isolation, self harm, unhealthy eating habits that ultimately backfired, and suicidal ideation. When I found those photos, I wanted to cry. I could feel all that wasted time and self loathing was for nothing. I was fine, I wasn't even large until after I started carrying the "weight" (baddum tss) of my coping mechanisms. I ended up getting as heavy as 208lbs at 4"9' by the time I was 16. That kind of pressure is insane. I really resent that I spent so long dogging on myself when I needed to be my biggest fan.
@julsweaver
@julsweaver 2 года назад
Further, it all makes you wonder...if I thought I looked like a healthy kid, what was wrong with me that everyone didn't? Well, it was the 90's/early 00's, and I suspect that America's fascination with girls that look adult was part of it. I was healthy, but I wasn't "good looking" I think about that, too, and it just adds more and and more trash to the trash fire.

I bet she said the picture was completely fine and bc of that she was asked *what* she saw wrong with the picture, so she was forced to say something. And they edited it in a way where we would only see the “bad” part of her critique, while in reality she was coerced to say things, like we have seen before. Production asks them things so they talk about it, then edit it to make it seem they said so by their own will.

When the girls are judging the others photos, you might take into account that not all of the girls criticism or praise is being shown on the episode. So when we cut to Keenya's picture and we see all these criticisms from the other girls they probably, as an editing choice in order to villainize her, cut out any positive comments that the girls made. And looking back 10 years plus ago she may not remember any of the positive comments because, as she said, she's focused on the actual judges not the other girls since she knows ultimately the decision still rests with them.

I remember watching this season as a young, young girl… maybe 10? And I hated Keenyah. I remember thinking, wow? Is it really that hard I can’t believe she gained so much weight, she should just stop eating. Looking back at it now, I’m ashamed and appalled by that. Just goes to show how toxic this show and this time in media in general really shaped my mind.

Okay. This "judging each other" made no sense about Knowledge of the business. If you know you're better than your competition, you don't have to worry about that person. If they're better, then you can see what they give and try to make yourself better. This was just the CATTINESS brought on by production and Tyra. For the drama. Same with most/least potential.

When I was a kid it was my dream to be on this and to be a model. Once I hit probably 13 I started struggling with my wait and have never stopped. I'm glad I didn't follow that dream and make myself sicker with my ED than I did in my teen years. Also, looking back the way the girl were treated is so sad and disgusting. If I wasn't a literal child I'd be mad at myself for liking it. She is such a sweetheart and I feel horrible they picked at her weight she was SO tiny. Theyd think I was obese. And you're such a sweetheart too Jessica! Thank you for bringing this content. I really enjoy it!!!

If Jessica ran this show, everyone would get only positive feedback and no one would get sent home unless they were mean. Radical empathy might not be a bad idea for a show, everyone gets prizes and when your head gets too big, you go home lol then get invited back bc she felt bad 😂 I'd watch it for the frustration

Besides the psycological harm the show may have done to the models, I have to bring up the message it was sending. I was a bit overweighted when I was a teenager and I remember watching this show, thinking that Keeenya was beautiful, and I did actively thought: "If she's Overweighted, I'm extremely fat. If she is ashamed of her stomach, I should be ashamed of my entire body. If she is an elephant, I'm a whale. If she has to watch what she eats and how much, I should stop eating at all" (I actually did develop an ED for a while).

Watching all of these grown adults body-shame a 19 yr old is so awful. I'm so sorry Keenyah that you had to deal with that cruelty and the trauma from it for years after, it's so unfair. I’m glad Keenyah made you watch from the start. If you want content and looking for issues on the show, well there’s more and when you skim, you missed out the context if they discussed it in judging. The judging each other makes so much sense because they saw how friendly they are in the beginning of this episode. ANTM is so brilliant in manipulating, and i don’t if that’s good or bad.

Thank you for a great video as always Jessica. And for Keenyah, if you were to see this: I'm from sweden and me and two of my friends watched this season almost religiously. They came to my place every week and we watched it together. And it is so sick how your mind gets so twisted at that age. I think I was 14 or 15. And in my memory you gained a lot of weight and I remember us making comments about it. I fully believed the narrative. Watching this show now I see so much that is not right and that is abusive to so many contestants. But it still got into our heads watching. And seeing this now...you looked gorgeous then (and still amazing now btw). What they did to you was so wrong. And no wonder I was bulimic less than a year later. I don't want to blame the show entirely but it most likely did not help... So Keenyah, you don't know me and you most likely don't care what a dumb 14-15-year old said about you almost 20 years ago. But I am so terribly sorry for what I said about you (and to myself) back then. I am glad to see that you have done so well for yourself, you deserve all of it.

So much love for Keenyah. She is one of those people who was shown off purely as one demential, and in a very poor light, but she clearly was so much more than that. I think Brittany roasted her the hardest because they got along so well. 1) I wouldn't have put it past the judges to have lined that up as a *dramatic* back stab And 2) she probably felt more comfortable being critical of a friend because she has a good idea of how well she'll take it, and it doesn't pit anyone she isn't as close with against her It's actually really smart to talk up the people you aren't as close with so they can't say mean things about your personality without them sounding crazy. They probably had the girls judge each other that way not only to stir the pot but also to get intel on how to hurt each of them and make them vulnerable. A person is easier to manipulate when they are feeling vulnerable and insecure. The girls know each other better and know what the others are insecure about more than the judges do. So they had all of them talk crap on each other to create cuts and show insecurities then in their judging they used that info to rub salt in the wounds. ANTM always wanted to keep the girls starving for praise and approval, grateful for any scrap thrown to them by the elitist panel, and vulnerable/compliant to the will of the producers who used them disposably to get the reactions they wanted for tv.
