The left coalition are the largest block so they will want the prime minister, but if Macron can pull together a Center left coalition, this could work out just fine. Trying to compromise with the Communists will be his biggest challenge. Good news is that the Ukraine supporters are in clear majority, and RN looks like it will be the smallest of the three.

(unless I'm mistaken) EW weapons only disrupt/jam/overwhelm the signal between the drone and operator. When R/C objects enter the field of the EW weapon, the signal degrades until manual operation within the field is overwhelmed by the strength of the countermeasures. This is visible in many of the kamikaze drone videos, where the signal degrades until the screen is filled with static. The best way to circumvent the countermeasures is to circle the target at a distance greater than the EW device's reach, line up with the weakpoint and build up enough momentum that when the drones have entered the field, their speed should be enough for the operator to hit the target.

Hello Jonathan and ATP team, there does not appear to be additional ammunition. It's only 32 new gun barrels . It suggests that the barrel life is 1800 rounds per barrel. The boats is about vague, the old Royal Marine rigid raiders? The additional AS90 is a good supplement. 😊 It looks like a sop, to keep the UK in the news . Have to wait and see if the Starmer starts to rebuild the British Army without that not likely that available stocks will be available. Cheers😊

@stefanheinzmann7319

To Jonathan: I think the open letter of various academics in the Guardian of today, amongst them Mearsheimer, opposing NATO membership, would be well worth a detailed discussion.
@stefanheinzmann7319
@stefanheinzmann7319 7 дней назад
Let me offer my own attempt at a response to that open letter "The Nato alliance should not invite Ukraine to bevome a member", signed by several dozen academics. The authors call it "unwise" to invite Ukraine into NATO. The reason is that article 5 would compel members to go to war to repel an attack against Ukraine, especially the USA. But the USA, they argue, has insufficient security and prosperity interests to warrant direct military intervention. They say that if this is true today, they should not commit themselves in the future. To this, I have to say that one of NATO's principles is that an attack on a member state is an attack on the entire alliance. If every alliance member prioritized its own security and prosperity interests over those of the entire alliance, then one would have to question the purpose of the alliance as such. Would the authors, by implication, also make the entry of the USA into a military intervention dependent on its own security interests when a NATO country was under attack? Would they, for example, warn against a robust military response when a Baltic NATO member state was under Russian attack? Would they say that the security and prosperity interests of the USA would be greater with Estonia than with Ukraine? Or is that a tacit dismissal of the entire NATO policy, and a return to security politics centered on national interest? The problem that needs solving is how to protect Ukraine from Russian imperialism. This doesn't just mean to deter invasions, but also to counter other forms of hostile activity against Ukraine. The instruments that have been used in the past, for example the Budapest Memorandum, have shown to be insufficient or ineffective. We need something better, and the question is what realistic options there are left. You can of course argue that protecting Ukraine is not "our" (USA, NATO, EU, whoever) problem. To say it in the words of the authors: That our security and prosperity interests don't encompass the independence or survival of Ukraine. But I would argue that this is not only short sighted, but nonsensical. It is already more than obvious that Russian imperialism isn't focused only on Ukraine, but that it aims much further. It is also clear that Russia views NATO and the West in general as its "real" adversary. There is no reason to think that they won't follow up on this as soon as they see a chance. Helping Ukraine defend themselves against Russia is directly and materially in the interest of the West in general, and the USA in particular. At the moment it suffices to enable Ukraine to do the fighting, but ultimately it is Russia's decision whether they want to pull NATO into this war more directly. NATO as a whole obviously doesn't want this, but it would be silly to give Russia a guarantee that it won't ever happen. The authors dismiss as wishful thinking "that the act of bringing Ukraine into Nato would deter Russia from ever invading Ukraine again", not least because "if Ukraine were to join Nato, Russia would have reason to doubt the credibility of Nato’s security guarantee", because it didn't go to war against Russia in 2014 already. This strikes me as an absurd argument. This is precisely the difference between Ukraine being a NATO member, and not being one! Of course NATO didn't directly intervene in 2014! It didn't have to, didn't have any mandate, and it was not interested in driving the escalation forward! The reaction can be criticized as too inconclusive, and too weak, but to conclude that it would be similarly weak when Ukraine was admitted into NATO, is effectively declaring NATO to be a paper tiger. What they are saying is that Putin wouldn't take NATO seriously anyway, and attack Ukraine even if it was a NATO member. Rather than helping Ukraine, admitting it into NATO would effectively increase the risk of NATO breaking apart because of members being incapable of coming to an agreement about how to react to an invasion. They don't say how they would protect Ukraine. They hypocritically say that "Ukrainians deserve to weigh their strategic options through clear eyes", but they don't say what they are. They claim that "the challenges Russia poses can be managed without bringing Ukraine into Nato", but they don't say how. This avoidance of the crucial questions is typical. It tries to make believe that the security interests of NATO or the USA can somehow be decoupled from the security interests of Ukraine, and by casting the Ukraine adrift, the USA can better cater to their own interests. That's wishful thinking. I don't believe that the authors are so naive. I think their arguments are underhanded. If Ukraine isn't admitted into NATO, it would require a different arrangement that provides the battered country with a similarly robust set of guarantees. They would not be served with, and accept, the kind of hollow and inconsequential verbal guarantees they had in the past. They need something similar to article 5. They need something they can rely on. This could be arranged outside NATO if enough guarantors stepped up and committed themselves to military intervention in case of further attacks on Ukraine. But there would be no point, as it would have to be many of the same countries that are in NATO already, and it could be interpreted by Russia as a similar threat to its security as NATO. It would be NATO by another name. I don't see any point in that. Of course Russia could see that as a pretext for World War III, but we have very little control over how they interpret things anyway. NATO is a defensive alliance, and if people don't recognize that, there's little we can do about it. So far NATO has done everything to convince the world that it doesn't want to attack Russia. Not admitting Ukraine does nothing to help here. It would only show Russia that NATO isn't serious about defending Ukraine.

Hello Jp not a ton for me to build on today but I did want to take up one point with you: 1) You spent some time talking about Chinese police stations and officers in Hungary. You seemed to be shocked by it and my opinion reading too much into a very old story. These foreign police offices run by CCP have been around for years. I believe the most high-profile case of these was the US taking down the one in New York City. Up until the end of the Wuhan flu period they were very common in every country You might want to look into this as it was in your own backyard as well. 2) In terms of relations between Xi and Whoreban well that is an interesting topic. I consider Hungary to be the trojan horse of Europe in terms of Chinese goods entering Europe. As we are seeing globally, the world hat caught on to Xi's green goods trick. One of the ways around this is final production done offshore and this is the role Hungary is playing for Xi. If you look at the billions that Chinese firms are pouring into Hungary you will understand the trend. It will become made in the EU as opposed to made in China as goods will be finished in the EU. It is a funny work around that has existed for decades across all countries. You get weird rules like 80 20 to determine where a product is made (80 off shore 20 finishing in the country which will designated as the country of origin). The best move for the EU is to article 7 Hungary and then this will not be a problem. Another great example of this is billions getting poured into the Mexico from Chinese companies for the exact same reason. It is seen as a potential work around Trump tariffs if he gets into office. Keep up the solid work. Appreciate you.

Part & parcel of the use of decoys is to make them look real both before & after they are attacked . It is not difficult nor particularly expensive to include a 44 gallon drum of Kerosene in a decoy aircraft . Same story with field equipment and fort them add a box of basically fireworks or some thermite and you have what looks like a massive explosion A 1/2 kg of metallic sodium makes a really massively bright fire as does magnesium wire , foil wool . A 1/2 kg or white phosphorous again makes a really convincing decoy fire . Remember there are several different reasons for using decoys . Decoys used to fool the enemy of the size or positions of forces do not need to be so realistic because they will be mixed with real equipment and are just there to force the enemy to reposition their defence . The phantom armies used before D-Day is the perfect example of this. Then there is field drones , often placed near the actual equipment needs to look real to draw enemy fire and to look real when it is attacked to convince the enemy they have destroyed the real item . This makes external analysis very difficult

Ya the Mig I wasn't thinking of sorry! I should've clarified what videos and jets! I know what happened, but can't say anything. Sorry I was thinking of the Su27s, Su-25s. Wasn't talking about the Chopper either. That one I really have no clue as of yet! But either way, I will say China has to be helping Russia with Satellite Footage. That's probably the best thing I could say. And those dam recon Drones as well! The Recon Drones able to fly freely everywhere in a country is a losing battle! That should be the Biggest Threat we should be dealing with, and using things/stuff that doesn't waste or cost Millions of dollars. If we allow Recon Drones & Chinese Satellite Intel to continue we are fighting a losing battle. Cause the F-16s are crucial to the fight, we need to gain some kind of Air Superiority, or we are going nowhere, but backwards! We need to stop the Glide Bombs ASAP! If we can get rid of the Glide Bombs we can start moving forward, or at least stop their forward progress!

It'll be interesting to see how the next generation of tanks adapt to the FPV threat the tech to do so is already available so its not a massive R&D problem, tanks have the power generation and space for such systems. I'm so interested to see what the M1A3 will end up looking like with all the info coming out of the ukraine conflict. I imagine we'll end up seeing much larger power generation for massive EW arrays, more distributed armor arrays like on the merkava, maybe drone specific APS (active protection systems), and probably unmanned turrets too.

If the NATO 155mm was not standardized the M 777, Panzerhaubitzer, AS90 would not be as effective as it has been in blunting the Russian offensive in 2022 and boosting the successful 2022 counter offensive. The Chekia ammunition plan would not be effective as they are buying Indian, Singaporean, South Korean and South African ammunition. They lost most of their best systems. They cant really produce the quality or quantity of EW equipment because they are totally reliant on imported parts to produce high quality electronics. EW equipment is designed to target specific Frequencies and systems 2 years ago almost no one had the systems in place to combat drones of this type and no one including Russia had the number of systems that would be required to cover this kind of fighting.

I don’t agree with that assessment of the British contribution. We don’t have the stockpiles to just ascribe a value to something that already exists and send it on. Yet we were the first to give all the meaningful weapons systems when everyone else was sitting on the sidelines. This means everything we have given is either something that was actually part of our defence forces or cost actual real terms money now. Rather than some form of onwards accounting capital expenditure. We are also a major component of ongoing 155 shell production and continue to be very forward on the diplomacy front and keeping countries honest. That twitter thread seemed much more a push to keep us as a leader when both the US and France were looking dodgy on ongoing support. It is however good to see Labour continue with the position they stated they would take and immediately commit to more support. I’m actually in the position where I believe the statements of Starmer over sunak. Sunak was promising increases in defence spending and then not delivering, and hence I didn’t really believe their statements on Ukraine either.

Our civil service was a thankful thorn in conservative machinations, with the tories repeatedly trying to undermine their capabilities, but I believe they've mostly held out against a lot of the attempts to diminish their purview. The tories _did_ do more damage after the last election, using their majority to allow a deluge of policies which had been festering in the tory cesspool of ideas, but now we have a Labour government who also won a convincing majority, we just might be able to claw our way out of the fetid mess we were left with, and can fix the cracks put in the civil service (among other areas).

So a group that we approve of fighting internally against the government of a country are brave gorillas The same thing being done by a group we disapprove of is called terrorism , really ? Weather you like it or not the Taliban is the legitimate government of Afghanistan . Furthermore the Taliban have done more to lift the population out of grinding and starving poverty in 2 years than any previous government since the king was overthrown . And they have done it without gobbling up billions in foreign aid ( most of which was stolen by the previous governments ) Human rights & womens rights are a nice ideal to aspire to but not starving to death or living you life with substantial medical problems due to malnutrition during pregnancy are both worse . Over time those attitudes will change as we have seen is Saudi Arabia and Iran and that is the only way for it to happen . Evolution is much more permanent than revolution The USA would not allow the Qush Tepa Canal, to be constructed because it passed through land that the Taliban had control over OTOH the Taliban have managed to build the Qush Tepa Canal, despite it passing through land that is under the control of ISIS-K So while we call russia a terrorist state ( which it is ) and the Taliban as being brutal & barbaric ( which they are ) that does not preclude them both having problems with another terrorist group namely ISIS-K So yes the Kremlin is talking with the Taliban about the control of ISIS-K China is talking with the Taliban about the control over ISIS-K Because if there is not a multi country plan & co-operation then ISIS-K will prevail and ISIS-K is even worse than the Taliban and in the middle of a region that has adopted a very brutal & violent interpretation of Islam we should be doing everything we can to assist the defeat & abolishment of ISIS-K The Wests belligerent attitude to the Taliban will comeback to bite all of us on the bum BIG TIME . Remember not that long ago when China was not recognised because of their atrocious human rights violations , but that dissipated over time. The real reason why the West refuses to accept the Taliban as the legitimate government is purely & simply because they beat us and our pride is hurt

That was a giant wall of rubbish. The Taliban breaches basic human rights and is ant-women, etc. Being "legitimate"... what the hell does that mean? I guess you'd argue that putin is legitimate? What a load of crap. Choose a new user name without "brain" in it.

Regarding the original comment and Toby’s response, I can’t do the subject justice. My own biases make it very difficult for me to be positive about the Taliban but none of these issues should be understood in totally black or white terms, over simplification of all Afghan matters has always been a problem for westerners. The guerilla/terrorist argument is largely a matter of perception, it depends on where you are standing at the time, historical perspective can change the one's opinion. With all due respect, I think to call the OP ‘a giant wall of rubbish’ shows a lack of knowledge or understanding. I think the Taliban are more capable of evolving into something more humane and positive than ISIS if they were given positive, careful help and tolerance, not best by Putin though. I think I would enjoy delving deeper into the topic with ‘I-have -a-brain’ but this is probably not the best place for that. I remember Afghanistan under King Zahir Shah with much affection and am devastated by it’s subsequent history and our part in it, I couldn’t just let this post pass by without chucking in my pennyworth.

@@dromrai To be honest I know nothing of Afghanistan history other than what some of the descendants of the camel drivers have presented at public lectures . As for the time since the US pulled out I have kept a sort of passing interest in it and was quite frankly astounded by what the Taliban have achieved in such a short time . Weather we approve of a government or not is no reason to make them a parrier state . The truth is when faced with a choice between the Taliban and the enforced US backed government the Afghans chose the Taliban and we have to accept that regardless of weather we like the Ideology of the Taliban or not . And from what I have seen the Taliban have been far more honest and far less corrupt than any government since the over throw of the king . We crap on about open, transparent & honest government then we ostracise this one because it does not meet our standards of human rights . Neither does Turkey, Hungry, most of South America and a big chunk of Africa .

@@I-have-a-brain_and-use-it Well you obviously have been taking a deeper interest in the country and it’s progress than most people bother to. Unfortunately, unless it is at the centre of some current issue, Afghanistan is now largely ignored by the majority. It is refreshing to read some positive views about the Taliban, who I do abhor but recognize could possibly evolve into something, better given the right encouragement. I agree it would be good if we were capable of producing honest, open, transparent government ourselves rather than just pretending that’s what we have. Unfortunately this is not a venue where you and I can sit and chat over a beer or two whilst throwing these subjects around, perhaps somewhere, sometime...
