VW Polo Alternator / Battery Light On - Tests to Confirm Faulty Alternator - Also Ibiza, Fabia etc

In this video I go through the tests I use to confirm a faulty not charging alternator on the 1.4 TDi VW Polo (same mechanically as Seat Ibiza & Skoda Fabia). The alternator fitted was Bosch DFM. The test and info shown here will apply to most cars.

Great video, very informative. I've got Polo 6N2 where the battery light comes on intermittently. AA had a look and said may be the alternator regulator/rectifier. Based on your video, I'll be testing the instrument abd ECU cables.

This is a really helpful video - very informative - great presentation style - you explained everything very well. I am in the UK and have a VW Polo 1.4 TDI 2008. I have replaced the Bosch battery (OEM) and start out fully charged. After only a few miles, the power steering light illuminates, followed moments later by the ABS light and eventually a full set of dash lights. The engine will continue to run but as soon as it is turned off, the battery is completely dead. VW tested for a parasitic drain but there isn't one. I'm surprised they didn't offer to explore any further - just asked me to collect the car and see how it goes! So, after watching this video, I'm starting to think the alternator may not be charging the battery. Just wondering if you think it would be possible to replace the regulator without removing the alternator or is that just wishful thinking! Also, based on what I've said, do you think I'm on the right track? As per the title of this video, I'm surprised the battery light isn't the first to let me know something is wrong?

Thanks for your comments ref the video. I would certainly do the tests in the video. Might be possible to change the rectifier without removing the alternator but will be difficult due to access. Also don't discount the fact that the new battery could be faulty, and also that it still might have a parasitic draw that the garage haven't been able to find.

@@iofix Thanks for responding so quickly.. you know how it is when you just want to get on with the job (between showers of rain)... anyway, first thought was a parasitic drain... tested using multi-meter - OK - double checked by VW ... confirmed no drain .. brand new OEM Bosch battery fitted.. did loads of electrical testing today... alternator only outputting 3V with engine running... was hoping to replace voltage regulator... removed alternator... cannot source correct regulator and/or new alternator... 14V/120A (grateful for any suggestions)
