Covered the basics very well. A surprising number of starter motor failures are a result of heat damage to the solenoid causing high current draw and the inability of the solenoid to engage the starter motor.

Hey Colin, Spot on. This would have been a solenoid issue, but due the the amount of kilometres, I suggested a replacement starter. Due to the high voltage drop, the pull-in coil wouldn't have been able to activate the solenoid & also supply voltage to the motor itself.

Excellent video, however VZ V6 Starter motor will come out the top. No need to go under the car. Remove 3 torx screws/bolts on exhaust shroud. Remove 1 torx screw on starter motor shroud. Pull starter motor shroud out towards front of engine and jiggle out completely. Undo 11mm bolts with ratchet socket. Pull out starter. Take off two wires. 15 minute job if you are lucky. Took me an hour because previous owner had stripped one of the torx bolts on exhaust shroud.

As an old can driver first thing I would have done was cranked the Motor by hand a little bit just in case it was stuck. Second thing I would have hit the starter motor with a hammer, while someone turning the key that would tell very quickly if you start a motor's stuffed. Cheers Graham.

Yes Graham, there are a few different options. Of course, hitting it with a hammer generally will help with brush contact and occasionally a sticky solenoid. Turning the motor by hand will turn the engine itself, but unless the starter is accidently still engaged for some reason, will not turn the starter motor itself. These use a pre-engaged starter motor. With my testing procedures, I try and show the different options to help others, not necessarily what I do in the field. Thanks for your comment.

bit late to the party but i was interested to know what was wrong with the starter itself, where you can hear it extending/clicking into place when you turn the key, but not rotating- is it easily fixable? or just has to be replaced? like in the case where you can start it, but it takes a couple tries as above, what exactly is wrong with the thing? i understand if u don't have time or inclination to answer this, i appreciate your time all the same :) just wondering if there's any avoiding replacing it

Good question. As stated, if the starter motor (the motor itself) draws too much current, that means that the motor is mechanically worn (bushes or brushes) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hIy4p_Pkbug.html In our case, after doing the voltage drop test, it showed the solenoid connection was faulty. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hIy4p_Pkbug.html Yes, I could have just replaced the solenoid, but for the price of a new starter (complete), compared to me replacing the solenoid only is not worth it. Factor into that the age of the starter & labour costs involved, the customer decided to go with a full starter motor. Thanks for your comment. 😉

Hey max, my 2006 SVZ VZ is showing error code u2108 (CAN-Bus No Communication with ABS/TC/ESP) I have searched forums it seems like many people have received this code, but no one seemed to solved it on the forums. Could you assist?

Sure. Just a few questions. Is the check engine or ABS lights on the dash? Are the fault codes listed as 'Present or Current'? Do the codes come back after clearing? Have all fuses and relays been tested?

just replace my starter motor today with the same problems/symptoms original starter motor 249,000 km replaced it with a genuine starter (mitsubishi)

Hey John, If yours is an APP (Accelerator Pedal Position) sensor, it will have 2 carbon tracks that tend to wear, but you might also find that it is mechanically sticky on the pedal pivot point. Not sure how much access you have to it, but you may have to remove it, lubricate it and then reinstall it.

Not quite sure I understand, but if the solenoid clicks, that means that it is getting power to the solenoid, however, voltage should be checked there to make sure there are no voltage drops.
