I'm childless and have spent most of my adult life single. Also have worked two jobs and eventually made it through college. I've definitely seen friendships fizzle because they were in a different place in life.

I had an old friend who acted like I was abandoning her in a busy and hard time in my life, and we don’t talk at all now, because even though I should have done better, I realized that part of that was it was no longer pleasant to be around each other and there was more disagreement than agreement about even the smallest things because I two very divergent foundations for life and thinking. I have a few friends now that we have some very foundational common ground. This doesn’t mean we can’t be friends with people different than us. It just doesn’t work at a certain level of depth, because at some point the person can no longer give advice, and talk with you about your deepest thoughts because of differing views.

The thing is, she’s assuming that the friends are going to be upset to lose her and her husband, but who’s to say that they don’t feel the same way? If someone is checking out in a friendship, it’s a huge turn off for everyone involved. It probably won’t be this huge loss to them if she moves on- she kind of needs to get over herself tbh.

Same. I don't have friends, and at work I was measuring a male coworkers hair with a ruler making a comment about how long he should cut it. Then, a female coworker just jumped in and made a "joke" about how she was going to call Human Services because I "janked" his hair.... Me, and the male coworker, we just rolled our eyes.

I completely get not liking my husband’s friends. We are so very different and our work friends are different circles. I think we need to work on doing things together as a couple. We each do our own things and rarely do things together.

Excellent advice!! Don’t worry one minute about what that friend group will think. They will be puzzled that you’re stepping back and maybe feel slighted for a short time. But they’ll be over it soon enough. Join things that meet on a regular basis. When they ask why you aren’t coming you can just say “that’s our (whatever) night.” Now look forward to meeting so many new friends!

The caller should go to playgroups with kids. She might meet other moms there she connects with.

My mum has also advised this. My social anxiety will just not allow me to. And honestly, I don’t want to be friends with people who live certain…lifestyles.
@kara2162
@kara2162 2 года назад
This is a good option, especially when you don't work and are isolated at home with little kids, but to be brutally honest, there is a slim chance that you will really connect in a real friendship the way you would in the "real world".

Chiming in as a mom who lives in WA like the caller, playgroups are hard to find currently. No one wants to meet in person bc of covid, especially strangers, and a lot of the in-person activities for kids are still not opened back up. Not saying it's impossible, but may be challenging, and I still haven't found any groups for my 10 month old.

I think she thinks these women who are not really her friends care about her wayyy more than they probably actually do. She says that they are not even her friends, they are the girlfriends of her husband’s friends. They probably only tolerate her and try to include her to be honest.

I feel the same way with some relatives. The male is a dingleberry that I got with marriage. He is a mild sociopath that I have nothing in common and he's a complete wienie. He was running around with a dirtbag girl while his wife was still alive and now that's his "wife." I'm like Omg, this is my family now. It's not worth getting rid of my husband if I did that...they win. I'd rather mop the bathroom of a bar.
