starting the series off on a traumatic note LOL also for some reason Al's voice in the dub is SO quiet so I ended up enabling subs (but with english audio still) we're on episode 8 over on patreon with full opacity / audio and an additional timer reaction for tier 3! www.patreon.com/hollyreacts

Ed's leg was for their mom... His arm was to bind Al's soul to the armor

Ed's still an alchemist. He isn't creating stuff out of nowhere, he made that weapon out of the materials in the floor. That's why there was a crater where he was standing. On top of requiring the materials that go in to whatever they are trying to make, alchemists also have to draw alchemist circles. Those are the glowing runes and symbols you saw everyone have when they were doing alchemy in the first episode. They basically serve as the formula or instructions to guide the alchemy in turning one thing into another. What makes Ed unique is that for whatever reason he no longer needs to draw a circle to get alchemy to do what he wants.
@thelifeofkenji4900
@thelifeofkenji4900 Год назад
I've never paid any thought as to WHY Ed can do that until watching this now. I think the reason those who have seen the truth can do it is because they become the transmutation circle (when they clap they form the circle) and the information is in their head, or burned into their soul, so its as if the instructions were drawn. I'm still not completely happy with this though, because Roy still needs his gloves despite knowing how flame alchemy works. If he clapped, why would it not work the same way.
@WhitePages2000
@WhitePages2000 Год назад
@@thelifeofkenji4900 Mustang's gloves are made with a special material that can create sparks. So first Mustang transmutes the air into a flammable gas, then creates a spark with the snap of his finger to ignite it. It was explained in the manga but didn't get adapted for whatever reason.
@dragonix8527
@dragonix8527 Год назад
@@thelifeofkenji4900 Also, his gloves have the transmutation circles embroidered on them. He's still using circles like most alchemists. Simply knowing how the alchemy works isn't enough. Ed is an exception because of the unique information he gained from seeing the truth. That's why he asks if Al saw it too when Al expresses astonishment that he no longer needs to use circles to perform alchemy. That's what he got in exchange for his leg, knowledge of how to perform alchemy without a structural matrix.
@valmoer
@valmoer Год назад
@@thelifeofkenji4900 My interpretation is that you *do* need the hardware (the transmutation circle) and the software (the knowledge of what your transmutation does.) Not unlike the start of computer science, you have to have specialized circuits boards (without the do-all capabilities of modern microprocessors) to correctly process the data you're sending through it. In comparison, Ed, by seeing the Truth, has an innate understanding of the mechanisms of Alchemy. Again, to compare to computer science, it allows him to run a "virtual machine" of any transmutation circle he'd need, as he has had access to the original blueprint straight from the Central Repository, so to speak. If I had to venture a guess as to why someone like Roy cannot bypass the need for a transmutation circle even in their domain of specialty, I would argue this is the difference between being knowledgeable and knowing the Truth - the "virtual image" of a Fire Alchemy circle Roy could conjure would, however close to perfection, still be fundamentally imperfect. And - again guessing - you don't want to perform alchemy with an imperfect circle. (And doubly so with a volatile alchemy like Fire Alchemy!)

He's still an alchemist, how Ed does it without a circle gets explained later on. But yeah Ed really took "Costs an arm and a leg" seriously.

12:00 it‘s not that he‘s creating stuff out of nowhere, it‘s that he uses part of the floor to create his weapon of choice. As for why he doesn‘t need the circle, there will be an a little more explicit explanation later.
@V1G4M1
@V1G4M1 Год назад
15:31 well, the thing is, they brought all the chemical components of a human body to the table and transformed them into the function and shape of a human body, so into a vessel of sorts. but since they don‘t know the „components“ of a soul, something was „missing“. What Ed traded his leg for was the moment of „pumping all the knowledge of the world into my brain“. He traded his arm to bind Als soul to the armour.
@V1G4M1
@V1G4M1 Год назад
16:36 funny you say that. The first episode is technically „filler“ and so fast paced to rope the people into the story that already watched the first anime adaption FMA03, as well as to introduce some of the „main cast“ to newcomers. In general, you‘ll notive that the first 15 or so episodes of FMAB might feel like they‘re faster paced, simply because they have to get quickly through material that already got animated before the 03 version deviated from the manga and did it‘s own thing.

As I understand it, the equivalent of "fullmetal" in Japanese sounds like the Japanese word for "stubborn". Bradley was making a pun on Ed's personality when he gave him his title.
@valmoer
@valmoer Год назад
Correct - 鋼の錬金術師 (Hagane no Renkinjutsushi, literally "Alchemist of Steel") is a pun on 鋼の人 (Hagane no Hito, lit. "Person of Steel") which means a headstrong/stubborn/opiniated person.

Fun Fact: In the Manga Ed and Al's backstory was revealed much later, about where episode 11 takes place in the anime.

This show throws a lot at you in the first few episodes, so her is a non-spoiler explanation of how the world works, and some things they show you, but don't spell out super clearly. You may or may not have picked up most of this, but it can help to have it laid out in plain text. Alchemy is a power that lets you reshape things around you. When they say you need to give something up to get something, it means that to make a sword that weighs 3 pounds, you need to have 3 pounds of metal to reshape into the sword, not that you need to sacrifice something extra. This causes problems when you are trying to do alchemy with a soul, because what can equal the value of a soul? If you try to do alchemy without enough material for the transmutation it can rebound, and harm the person performing the transmutation. (This is seen in what happens to Ed and Al.) Everyone is capable of performing alchemy, but it requires a lot of knowledge and training, so most people don't know much about it. You have to know what you are taking apart, and what you are putting back together. You then draw a circle, and the runes around it. Each circle does something specific, kind of like computer code. You see Ed make a simple cirle to turn the floorboard into a bird carving. The State Alchemists are employed by the government, and serve in the military. Most of them will have a circle drawn on a glove or tattooed on their hand. (see Armstrong's Gauntlet, Mustang's Glove, McDougal's tattoo and his armor, etc) This circle lets them do their common combat transmutations without stopping to draw a new circle every time. Each circle still has a specific job however. Ed is special because he does not need to draw a circle, which lets him be very flexible, as long as he knows what he is working with. (for example, knowing the common materials in the dirt and cobblestones, so he can pull things out of the ground.)

I can't imagine anyone listening to Vics performance during the scene where they try to bring back their mother and still thinking DUB isn't the way to go XD Although honestly every VA did an amazing job, and there truly are some stand-out performances, I'm thinking of another scene with Hawkeye that also always amazes me at how well the VA's in the dub did. My favorite voice may be Fuhrer King Bradleys, but unfortunately his VA passed away.

I like that despite how powerful Ed is, he's not this ultimate badass. There are several people in this show that in a straight up fight, would easily kick his ass.

Ed's real power is his intellect, not his combat abilities, and tbh his only limitation is usually his morality.

I think *a* problem is that folks always bring up 03 in the early episodes like "03 adapted these better!", which does *not* get across that these are not just alternate versions, but actually two completely different shows with completely different stories, and thus both worth looking at individually.
