WHAT IF... This Show Wasn't Badly Written Crap? 

Thanos spent thousands of years dedicated solely to his mission and then one random guy just comes along and changes his mind with little effort. Wow, its a Gary Stu of Captain Marvel level.

I'm here leaving a comment to combat the algorithm and to voice my disappointment that today's writers are literally yesterday's bad fanfiction writers. Thanks for taking the hit for us again, Thorias.

I quite literally broke out into hysterical laughter after watching Vision kill himself. The guy says he's a logical being then proceeds to make the most illogical, nonsensical decision he could have possibly done.

I've seen a number of people talk about Episode 1 as pretty good in part because of how it made Steve into "The Nazi Stomper." Something I haven't seen any of them point out is that the Stomper suit was only made because the writers screwed up the Captain America timeline. In the movie, the first fucking scene is of Red Skull acquiring the Tesseract from the church, kicking off Hydra's R&D in developing new high tech weapons and other fun stuff. In the show, that event was pushed WAAAAAAAY back to potentially months later so that Peggy could heroically intercept the convoy transporting it, stealing it for the Allies, and also showing how much of a better Captain Super Soldier she'd have been than Steve. The Tesseract was then used as the power source for the suit, and Hydra spent pretty much the rest of the war sucking it because they didn't have the ability to even start working on the super technology they otherwise would have had.

I’ve been waiting for this vid with massive anticipation and it delivered. Also I gotta say the Thanos nerf was a huge wtf moment for me. The guy killed an entire ship of ASGARDIANS killed Loki and Heimdall smacked Thor around and broke Hulk all without even using the power stone, but he can’t beat people who should’ve been kiddies toys compared to him?!

In the Booster Gold Pre-Neu52 comics run there's an issue where Booster is given the mission to go back and save Barbara Gordon from being shot. When Rip comes back he was expecting Booster to try a couple of times and quit. And complain. Instead he tried over and over, getting tortured multiple times by Joker in multiple attempts, and would have continued if Rip hadn't stopped him. Because he was supposed to learn that certain things can't be changed. Booster still begged Batman to forgive him for failing. It was a truly great book. Too bad Disney can't seem to manage something similar.

T'Challa was my favorite character in Civil War, because his arc *worked*. He came off as a legitimate badass without being a cliche. Too bad everything since has wrecked his character.

Amused me that Wasp’s suit could be breached but she could still change size. “Female character? Just assume she had all the powers the male character has, but an extra one (wings), is better than him, and has none of the weaknesses.” The writers REALLY need to watch the old material and stop just assuming.

I could barely stomach the first episode with Agent Carter… the second one broke me. I am no longer a Marvel fan and it’s their fault, T’Challa taming the Mad Titan and how he is almost a Messiah. Yep, you covered all my points now.

I would love to go up to the writer and ask what the thanos conversation was just to see how stupid it is

The Dr. Strange 'what If' sounds like they went off of 'The Time Machine'. I'm going off of the 90s movie mind you, but he can't save his fiancee no matter how many times he tries. When he asks the bad guy who's super intelligent why it's explained to him like this.. If you build a time machine to go back in time to fix the event to that caused you to make said time machine, you would never have had to build a time machine. It's a paradox, so even if you prevent her death one way, she must still die to justify the time machines existence.

The original “What If?” comics were the same actually. They would change the original premise of the story, but then change other elements which weren’t consistent with the actual background of the original events which would not have been affected by the original change. Most of the books were bad to awful anyway.

I watched the first episode of What IF and couldn't help feeling that it was somewhat familiar. Then it hit me. it was nearly a direct copy of the Wonder Woman film but with worse...well everything.

18:39 The reason (or at least as I understood it) that Christine has to die is because in THIS universe the reason that caused Strange to become the Sorcerer Supreme was her death, her death leads to Strange gaining possession of the time stone...he can't change the point(in time) that causes him to gain the thing he uses to change that point.... that's how I understood what the ancient one said when speaking to him, he even said so himself, "I'm creating a paradox" (The Grandfather Paradox)

11:05 The best part of that awful take, though? That 'What if...?' scenario ends with _Ego_ _winning._ He found Peter, and Peter doesn't have any of the friends or other attachments that he had in Guardians V2. In the apparent effort to humiliate -Chris- -Pratt- Peter Quill, they apparently forgot that his dad's plan involved absorbing all life in the known universe. _And_ _now_ _he's_ _completely_ _free_ _to_ _do_ _that_ because he has unfettered access to Peter. I would have thought this was intended to be a subversion of the 'happy ending' they were setting up. After all, it _does_ logically follow that if Peter was working a dead-end job on Earth and never became Starlord, then there's basically nothing to stop Ego from finally finding him and having little trouble converting him to his side. Whatever else T'Challa did 'better' than Peter (somehow) is undone by having completely missed this thing with universe-spanning stakes. But considering how awful the entire episode was up until that point, I have no reason to give the writers any benefit of the doubt.

So basically "What If" is just the writers stomping on and replacing every popular white male character with a more "diverse" option which they then turn into a Mary Sue. Called it 😑

I'm glad someone agrees with me cause based on other yt reactions and social media in general everyone is acting like this show is amazing and my friend and I (who are both huge Comic Book people and MCU fans) have just been like um nahhhh, this ain't it

I’ve been wondering about the “what if”s and was kinda expecting it was going to be bad... sad to see I wasn’t disappointed.

It sounds like Marvel gave me another reason why I stepped off the MCU. I made a comment after hearing and seeing a screen shot of Peggy Carter being Captain American where I said these writers weren’t hired to make Peggy failed or be just like Steve’s journey. It would have to be super better. We have seen it so much in current day entertainment. When I was told about the Star Lord one, I knew that was just MCU listening to the Twitter hate Chris Pratt gets. I stopped listening to what they were doing with the What If… series which is a shame. I have a huge collection of the comics. They were fun one off stories that gave me a chance to see how one change like what would happen if Aunt May died instead of Uncle Ben or Captain American was never frozen and live through all events. Thank you for suffering for us. I enjoyed your review.

It really makes no sense for T'challa to be that good of a person. He likely learned that outsiders were not to be trusted from growing up in Wakanda, and from the Ravengers he learned how to steal. I understand having him be a good person, but this doesn't make any sense. I'll just re-read the What if comics I own.

Actually, here's an idea for the Dr. Strange Episode. Assuming he could use the temporal magic in this way: Move about as a separate entity other than himself from the past, so that he is doing what he does in the past, make it so that she stays home. Then, he reaches to her and plucks her out from that point in time and brings her from the past to the present, leaving traces of her DNA in a setup with the explosion that's supposed to happen at her home so that it looks like she died, even though she really didn't. Then he would still have his reason to go on his journey, but he could still save christine AND continue on his journey to defeat dormamu.

I’ve been complaining to everyone about the abysmal writing of this series since Ep1. And yeah Ep5 was the very worst.

In fairness of Scott’s head in the jar, they did do that in the Zombie comic but with Hope(or her mother can’t remember). But I agree that a lack of consequences and out of character behavior and events brings this series down.

Episode 3 and 4 were the only decent-good ones depending on your tastes, but everything else has been badly written trash. It’s actually amazing how incapable Marvel is of making anything of quality anymore.

The real (or original) marvel zombies took place in marvel early days. A zombie Sentry (was technically) patience zero. Had crossover Army of darkness, cosmic zombie, and other interesting idea. I wish they just did a series around Marvel Zombie, instead of a one-shot episode.

Honestly the episode I was most waiting for was the zombie one but it has the same problem that Lani and Kaiser of TFS noted. It was inconsistent and going between serious heartfelt moments to jokey-style Marvel humor. One minute we're seeing the end of the world and the next minute we're getting this jokey orientation video from Peter. When your subject material is THE END OF THE WORLD you have to go one of two ways: All serious like Walking Dead or all jokey like Zombieland. There is some wiggle room for maybe ONE comedic character and as Kaiser noted if it was JUST Scott doing the jokes it could've worked more. Still, the ending with Zombie Thanos downright gave me chills and hits the dark tone of the original comics even though I'm not sure what a zombifed Thanos would even do with a full gauntlet. Actually I feel their strongest episode thus far was the Doctor Strange one that felt the most like a true "What If?" story.

I made this same comment on another video discussing ‘What If…?’, specifically episode 2, and while I am pretty much copy and pasting it here, I still think it’s relevant. Plus, like you said, every comment helps. Imagine if the premise for episode 2 was ‘What If Peter Quill had been taken to Ego as a child?’ So Yondu goes along with the deal he made with Ego, he brings Peter Quill to his father as intended, and Peter, in his state of emotional pain after having just lost his mother, gets taken in by Ego and they bond over their shared grief and we get a lot of similar interactions to we saw in Guardians Vol.2. What’s different though is that, in this reality, Ego has had decades to spend teaching Peter how to use his Celestial powers, since no one would come looking for him, and in that time, he convinces Peter that his goal to spread himself across the Universe is just and righteous and they prepare to enact their plan. Cut to years later, when Peter is roughly the same age that he is in Guardians 1 and they start ‘The Expansion’; entire planets get consumed, trillions of lives are lost and Ego’s being is essentially everywhere. Meanwhile, out in deep space, Thanos (either on his ship or in his sanctuary) gets word that thousands of planets are suddenly being swallowed up by an unknown force, killing every living being upon them. Because this actively undermines his plan to ‘save’ half the Universe, since everyone on these planets is dying, not just 50%, Thanos searches for the cause of this destruction and finds Ego, and seeing as Ego can’t be reasoned with and he has no other alternatives, Thanos wages war upon Ego and Star-Lord with his entire army that we see in Endgame and a truly titanic battle ensues. Now, just imagine for a second how awesome and epic this would be. Imagine Thanos and his entire army vs Ego, imagine a Godly Star-Lord vs The Black Order, heck, with the right situation in mind, we could even have post-Avengers 1 Thor and the Asgardians teaming up with Thanos to stop the Universal destruction. Perhaps they even give him the Tesseract to use in the fight. seeing as at this point in time, they would have in their vault and they need every speck of power at their disposal for this battle and though giving Thanos an Infinity Stone is an extremely risky move on their part, they don’t really have any other options.

Marvel Zombies is definitely better than this What If ripoff. It has some dark humor, but it's not like the characters are telling jokes. Any humor is on the Zombies' side (ie bring up Peter eating Mary Jane and Aunt May and being very emotional about it after he feeds if it pops into his head or Zombie Luke Cage casually chowing down on aliens while having a chat with a dimension hopping Black Panther/Storm/Human Torch/The Thing from the main universe), but anyone who isn't infected takes it completely seriously and it's still treated like a horrible situation. Speaking only of what I remember of Marvel Zombies 1, 2, and Dead Days btw.

Finally, someone says it! I have been getting shit for weeks now for saying"What If" sucks. The storylines are shit, most of the stuff that happens is stuff that nobody really would ever give a shit about if it happened like I don't care to know what would happen if Peggy Carter took the Super Serum, I don't care to know what would happen if Tchalla became Star-Lord (couldn't even finish watching that episode), and I definitely do NOT care about what would happen if Dr. Strange tried to bring what's her name back because common sense tells me it would not be able to happen because she died for a reason so no matter how you change events logic tells you she will still die somehow.

I cant wait for your Star Trek:Lower Deck season 2 reviews. Those were entertaining as hell!

"What if the show was actually good? " WHAT IF...???

Man, if the Zombie episode had been super dark, that would have been awesome. They should have done a 3 Part series, starting with the Avengers trying to hold San Francisco. They have Captain America, Iron Man, War Machine, Vision, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, and sure even Black Panther and Black Widow. They first lose Black Widow who is trying to save citizens. War Machine is overwhelmed and his suit is damaged and he is consumed by the horde. Scarlet Witch is infected and Vision takes her away, abandoning the Avengers. Falcon, Panther, Iron Man, and Cap are left and they have to decide what is best. Panther leaves to defend Wakanda. Falcon, Cap and Iron Man try to destroy San Francisco with a nuke (like in Avengers with New York). Falcon is killed destroying Janet’s Wasp. Iron Man sacrifices himself saving Cap

Great & brutally honest tv series review, Thorias. so I think I will stick with the one shot comic issue of What if Peter Parker Became The Punisher, then. :)

You have realized that most of these realities are DOOMED? Right? We even got to see one reality die. The only one with hope, is Peggy's reality. But no Steve, is no Falcon, no Winter Soldier, and everyone/everything else is a wild card. (Did Howard live/get married to have Tony? Or was Antonia born a few years earlier/later/not at all. Did Hydra reform in SHIELD, or did Steve/Bucky/Howard stop that?) Star Lord will soon be Ego, along with everything else. Cap and Cap may be able to repel Asgard if Odin awakens, but Tony is NEEDED to stop Thanos. We saw what happened to Strange. And lastly, Zombie Thanos.

I was really looking forward to the Zombie episode. Happy gets pierced by a tow arrow and barely reacts. Not even an "ouch!" Instead he keeps making sound effects for his laser as he's being dragged off to his death. This is a grown adult, I thought to myself.

So the doctor strange episode was ripping off the story "The Time Machine"? Main character builds a time machine, goes back in time to save the woman he loves but she keeps dying because if she didnt die then he would have never built the time machine in the first place to go back in time to save her thus creating a paradox.

Vision didn’t even try to stop Bucky from discovering his secret. He basically told him too that he had a big secret in front of everyone. Vision killing himself to be near to Wanda was hilariously pathetic.

Marvel has to stop with their characters doing stand up routines 😫😫😫 look I know you want people to have fun and some time you wanna break the tension in your shows and movies but c'mon...... How can someone make them understand that they are overdoing it and it's not working

I just gave this show a hard pass, the reason mcu set itself apart a decade ago was that they were interconnected and seeing how they worked with those limitations to still be creative and craft compelling stories that fit in with the established characters from the comic books. What if just came across as an excuse half ass fan fictions into cheap looking animation.

I like the Third and Fourth episodes the Third was pretty good but it was marketed wrong it should have been called what if Hope Van Dyme joined shield The fourth is what if Strange loved Christine

I dont want to pop your bubble but Kevin Feige said during an interview that every What if Episode is canon in its own Universe in the Multiverse newly created in Loki's final... for continuity, well you can see the same Tentacle monster in Episode 1 and 4... plus there's a photo promot that came out showing Capt Carter with Evil Dr Strange.. so they will all be back... hopefully it will be better on the big screen

And now you have me wondering how much more super-amazing-awesome Star Lord would have been if it was Batwahman who got abducted as a kid.

I did like the Dr Strange episode, that was interesting a story. But the rest, it just became more and more obvious the writers didn't have a clue what they were doing. The zombie episode was just garbage. If they tried to focus on just writing stories instead of ticking boxes they might make something out of it.

I don't look forward to shows I don't watch anymore. I look forward to seeing you flip out over them. Thank you for your service and God bless you, son!

I like the channel "Beyond the Trailer" and most of the time she is very good at making salient points about the MCU, but for this series she has been a total fan girl and it makes no sense. This series sucks. Thank you for your honest take on this and for expressing my thoughts exactly. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that feels this way about these episodes. Glad to know that there is another sane person out there. :)

by the way this is nothing like Marvel zombies the actual comic book Subvert Zombies by having them so intelligence they can actually talk. Which makes it more scary by having the Is zombies Not only use their powers in Is creative ways but also trick people by making them think they're not infected. the humor is smart because it's dark humor. Because it's the only way for most heroes to cope with the horrible things they've done. Do not let this Crap Stop you from reading the quality

I just feel that the writers have no idea of the concept of what... "What if..." truly is for. Honestly, I think they should have just animated the stories from the books... but sigh... they gotta go lazy and keep the MCU going.

Amazing that the tentacle monster could easily crush Red Skull, a super soldier, but Peggy could overpower it. The episode was rushed and bad. Even though Steve was shot, isn’t that more or a reason to put him in the machine in hopes that it will help him? At least there was that one scene in the diner of the incel giving her some humble pie. Thanos without the infinity gauntlet beat Fat Thor, Iron Man, and God Cap. The whole episode was a joke, my wife actually turned it off when Korath got excited to see T’Challa. Ant man’s head being in a jar may be a reference to Wasp’s head being in a jar in Marvel Zombies 2. Couldn’t Dr. Strange transport her to the future and make his past self think she’s dead?

I figured that Futurama bit would bother you, especially since it’s where your channel name comes from. Great review as always 👍

Another flaw with this episode's worldbuilding: T'Challa reforming Thanos (which shouldn't be possible) leads to the Collector becoming a Galaxy-wide Kingpin, killing the Avengers and adding their weapons to his arsenal, and even creating an exhibit for the Wakadan tech he's collected; Yet he never invaded Wakanda despite knowing they exist and what they're capable of. Why would this Universe's ambitious and power-hungry Collector NOT want to flex on the Wakandans and steal the Vibranium they built the foundation of their culture on?

You're not alone Thorias. Everything you said in this video was spot on. I haven't liked "What If" at all. It just feels like it was made by one of those Mcu stans on twitter. Lazy, incoherent, and just plain boring. Not a good mix for a show, based in a world where all this awesome stuff can happen. Really a big disappointment from Disney/Marvel.

If T'Challa could reform Thanos with a single therapy session, why couldn't he do the same with Killmonger in the main universe?

Marvel Zombies Comic was fantastic. Episode 5 was a travesty.

Wait: I don't watch "What if...?", but from what you describe, I don't see how episode 5 follows the rules; if Hank and Janet are the ones that bring about Zombie Apocalypse, why Thanos is a zombie? Wouldn't the contamination be exclusive to Earth? The outbreak would've happened AFTER every Infinity Stone that was supposed to end on Earth was already there so I see no way the infection spreading beyond our planet... not in MCU reality anyway.

I think when it comes to time travel,you just can't prevent something that's integral to why you became the person you are. like the time machine from yesteryear,the doctor had invented the time machine because his love died and so no matter how many times he tried to save her,doing so would've made it so he never built the time machine he used to go back. so you can't destroy and re-make yourself because it would either make you stop existing or make it so you never would've or could've gone back to change things. time travel is just something nobody should ever do. let the past remain the past and learn to move forward

The Reavers threatened to eat Quill for 20 years, but kidnap a black kid and suddenly Yondu turns into Ward Cleaver.

Although I do like the series and it's much better and entertaining than WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier,I can somewhat agree and understand with you Thorias Unlimited since you have alot of good points.

The first time Uncle Ben is mentioned in the MCU and it’s the fucking zombie timeline.

Marvel zombies was a series of mini series. Even after being converted some were able to fight the infection. For example Dr Doom is a leader of the human resistance but turns out to have been infected the entire time. And Dr Strange was able to hold off the infection temporarily through magic. Hulk’s transformation becomes tied to his hunger and Thor can no longer use Mjolnir. The episode did not to it justice

Also where is Capt Marvel. Literally every one of these situations would have been solved if Capt Marvel had showed up. This is the problem with woke ideology. They pump up someone as "the bestest evar", give them tons of privilege then they never do anything with that privilege.

Thorias must be getting back into Batwoman shape with this one :D

You make very excellent points here where not one do I disagree with. You opened my eyes to this show. Which scares me a bit because I realized I was becoming a marvel shill. That was close.

The Zombie episode is the equivalent of turning gold into a turd. They really put in the effort to make it a total cringe fest

The only good Zombie comedy I know is, "Is This a Zombie?" and even that knows when to cut the comedy for seriousness.

Imagine Peggy Carter's jealous side getting super-serum-ed Peggy's great and all, but she's not super soldier material. She'd need a tragic origin story to smooth off the edges before getting juiced, otherwise it'd probably go as sideways as it would for Tony

I feel fairly safe in saying that What If? was not written for you. It was written purely for Twitter, with no intention that anyone actually watch it. For the moment, with Streaming Wars, this is the future of programming: Forget viewing figures, focus on Twitter buzz. I’m not sure how that translates to more money. I feel like someone somewhere is being scammed, and I don’t just mean the audience.

You missed a chance to have this video start out with alternate universe Thorias who LOVED "What If...?"

The doctor strange episode would have been amazing if the only way to save christine was for strange to let his love for her go so it lines up with the main universe. Shit would have been amazing. Strange would have to let go of his happiness with his love Christine so that she can live, mmh whatever everything sucks nowadays so mmh, miss u early 2000s.

Man the zombie comics might as well be considered Shakespeare compared to this episode.

I was very disappointed with the zombie episode, especially with being a fan of the comic. The episode was just a standard zombie story with the MCU characters and the whole thing with the jokes and silly stuff was just too much. I mean in the comics not only we got to see the POV of the survivors but the zombies as well and how they feel about being zombies and their mental health. And trust me the Marvel Zombies comics is completely different from the what if version, I highly recommend Ultimate Fantastic Four I think somewhere between issues 30-40, Marvel Zombies, Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness, Marvel Zombies:Dead Days, Marvel Zombies 2. Everything after that they went downhill cuz they kept dragging the story.

Politics in media, is only a problem when there is bad writing. Written well politics, are either unnoticeable (without introspection) or character driven.

i wanted to find out how T'challa persuaded Thanos out of his mad quest! I was annoyed they didn't call her Captain Britain! Should have revealed Hope was killed when phil and those agents was atttacked by the ironmonger during the Iron Man movie. So Hank poisoned Tony with a time delay Ant Venom timed to coincide with Nat injecting Tony so he "stung" tony whilst he sitting atop of that restaurant. Hawkeye shot Thor instead of Phil, Hank's second attempt to kill him is thwarted by Helmdall accompanying him. That reveals who the villain is and Loki posing as Janet to bring Hank in.
