------
"Killing Me Softly with His Song" is a song composed by Charles Fox with lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972, but it did not chart. In 1973 it became a number-one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada for Roberta Flack, also reaching number six in the UK Singles Chart. In 1996, Fugees recorded the song with Lauryn Hill on lead vocals, their version became a number-one hit in twenty countries. The version by Flack won the 1974 Grammy for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and the version by Fugees won the 1997 Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The song has been covered by many other artists.
After decades of confirming Lieberman's contribution, Fox and Gimbel changed their story about the song's origins to downplay her role. Gimbel threatened McLean with a lawsuit in 2008, demanding he remove from his website an assertion that McLean was the inspiration for "Killing Me Softly," but McLean responded by showing Gimbel his own words confirming the inspiration, published in 1973. - Wikipedia

Both versions are dope but it depends on what frame of mind I'm in. When I listen to the F's version it brings me back to my teenage yrs n R's version reminds me of the ol heads in my family. My aunt used to play RF's music all the time especially her 'First Take' album. Good times!

Roberta Flack’s song reaches deep within her soul as if she’s singing to a special someone. Lauren Hill’s song is upbeat as though she’s singing to a crowd using most of the same words. My mood or environment would determine which is better.

I'm a 90's baby, 94 to be exact. The Fugees feel so nostalgic when I hear them because of that. That funky rhythm set a certain tone for my era, so it'll forever be iconic to alot of us 90's babies. I can't pick a favorite tho, they are like apples and oranges as other have said.

Not even gonna waste time explaining it: ROBERTA ALL DAY. I mean, I don’t hate the Fugees’ cover…of a COVER…but the latter is missing a verse and feels like the soul was stripped away despite Lauryn’s delivery of the vocals. Heck, I liked Al B. Sure!’s too but it ain’t ROBERTA.
@xp8969
@xp8969 2 года назад
Roberta's version is pretty but it lacks the soul that the Fugees version has, Lauren's voice is soooooo much more powerful and the beat in the Fugees version gives it the soulful vibe that Roberta's pop song version just doesn't have

Can't compare the two the original is haunting and just classic and sustainable in it's time to current....the fugees version is dope and was for the culture educated a lot of us youngins who weren't aware of the original and it is still a vibe 25 years later. I loved when they performed together it was epic. And I loved Al B Sure' s version when I was younger the writing and melody of this song is just everything how can you jack up a remake of it

Lauryn did the only thing you can do with a cover like this, updated and modernized the production. The song was written to be a soft, mellow, quiet with a voice and a piano, and very light production underneath. Lauren remade it to be the opposite. She modernized it, put in all the modern production tricks, echoed and overdubbed the hell out of her backing vocals, and added a heavy percussion. I loved what Lauren did with it for her time. But stripped of production and studio tricks, this is Roberta's song. In other words, put a mic and piano in front of Roberta in 1973 and put a mic and a piano in front of Lauren in 199-whatever, the better voice is Roberta. That's how I measure "who did it better."
@SenatiaA
