Imagine if the person who found the Dead Sea scrolls covered it in cloth, then only let 3-8 people “see it” with spiritual eyes as a “witness” to prove it’s real, and then later claimed that God took them back but still came out with a translation of those records… What a joke. That person would be a laughing stock.
@brannonburton5494
@brannonburton5494 9 дней назад
“Spiritual eyes?” and as many of the leaves as the said Smith has translated we did handle with our hands; and we also saw the engravings thereon, all of which has the appearance of ancient work, and of curious workmanship. And this we bear record with words of soberness, that the said Smith has shown unto us, for we have seen and hefted, and know of a surety that the said Smith has got the plates of which we have spoken.

So summarizing where we are with “the greatness of the evidence” with about 5 hours of airtime: 1. Chiasmus happens in the Book of Mormon and many other places 2. The Book of Mormon is set in the ancient Americas and ancient American civilizations existed, 3. Some people might have seen the plates at least spiritually. Greatness must not mean convincing or abundant or faith promoting.

But people still fell for it.

The officially accepted story about Martin Harris really gives the game away (even though most faithful Mormons and apologists refuse to acknowledge its significance). According to the story, Martin, David and Oliver were supposed to see an angel and the gold plates. They saw nothing while Martin was there. Martin became convinced that it was his fault due to a lack of faith or worthiness, so he left the group. As soon as Martin was gone, David and Oliver supposedly got the presentation from Moroni. Joseph then went to "help" Martin. After a lengthy coaching session from Joe, Martin finally exclaimed that he could see what he was supposed to see. (Probably just got hungry and tired and wanted it all to be over with.) NONE of this nonsense would have happened this way if we were talking about any real physical object, like a wagon wheel or a Chevy hubcap. There were no physical objects to see. Martin was a dim-wit and probably thought that he was actually supposed to see something. David and Oliver were clever and probably knew that they didn't really need to see anything. They just needed to play the game.

Nine makes a professional baseball team. I think I remember that story. Dunn was in the thick of battle at Iwo Jima and while he was swatting away hand grenades with a steel bat, he fell through a hole that turned out to be a time portal that Hagoth, the Gothic-Nephite-Shipbuilder/Time-Portal Maker/Pacific Island Populater had created centuries earlier. Falling through the portal, Dunn found himself looking straight at the gold plates in the stone box on the Hill Cumorah. A mortar shell had preceded him through the portal and had somehow blown up the stone cover of the box. Dunn got a good look at the plates and then saw a glowing angel-like man, whom he heard muttering: "Dayumm! Now I have to make a new stone cover and send this fool back through the time portal. This job is a lot more work than Jesus indicated. Hey...you! Grab onto your garments and close your eyes! You're going back to Iwo Jima."

Yes. I actually think when Burnett wrote about Harris seeing things "only in vision or imagination"...the word "imagination" is the most appropriate word. Everything we know about the mindset and proclivities of those men strongly indicates that they would have no problem picturing something in their mind when it is described for them or even just imagined by them based on something someone told them...and then simply re-labeling whatever they pictured in their mind as a "vision" or a real "spiritual experience" that is "just as real" as any physical experience. Once they've performed that simple routine of mental gymnastics...they're ready to go as "witnesses".

Why did Joseph Smith run through the woods carrying a heavy stack of gold plates that for the most part nobody would be allowed to see? Here are some answers from people who were in the area at the time. (1) Lemuel Durfee (erstwhile landlord and employer of the Smiths): "My guess is that he ran through the woods in order to...uh...get out of the woods. You know, like how it is that a chicken crosses the road to get to the other side." (2)Moroni (glow-in-the-dark resurrected man angel): "I actually don't know why he did that. I would have transported the plates for him...if he had asked politely. He offered to carry them back to his home. Didn't make no difference to me either way and I was already three bars down on my angel power pack." (3) Jacob G. Ullible (local hot rodder and friend of Oliver Cowdery): "If a guy who sez he's a prophet, see-er an' revemuhlator sez he done run through the woods a-carryin' a heavy stack of gold plates in a bag, does that mean he actually done did the very deed he sez he done did? Why would a prophet be a-sayin' nonsense if that nonsense ain't the most honestest truth? Frankly, he needed the exermuhcise on account of eatin' all of Mary Whitmer's raspberry pies."

These Syrupy Mormon films demonstrate just how differently people want to absorb information about the world. To me they appear so unrealistic as to read like a outrageous parody. But the makers of them must know their audience, and thus it says a lot about how that audience thinks and what they want to hear and be comforted by. It also is depressing because it's seems so incompatible with critical thought.

For me it would be a lot easier to believe that Joseph Smith fabricated a set of plates and showed them to the 8 in a physical way, then to somehow "hypnotize" all 8 simultaneously into having a "visionary" experience. Vogel obviously believes this "visionary" experience is fake, so how exactly did Joseph Smith induce all 8 to have a similar "visionary" experience at the same time? You know RFM (Mr evidence) and Bill Reel (Mr rationality) should perceive that it's alot easier to believe that Burnett somehow is either misinterpreting what Harris was trying to say to him, or that Burnett himself is being less than honest in his statement here. RFM of all people should know that this Burnett statement would be barred in court under the hearsay rule of evidence, and Bill Reel might consider discounting the statement because it is much less plausible than the notion that the 8 never saw the plates uncovered, and that they all experienced the same hallucination simultaneously. It's one thing to believe that a magic trick is involved, but Cmon you are way beyond that idea here. No matter how strong Vogel is in other areas of analysis, this is very weak argument in my opinion.
@marcus.H
@marcus.H 15 дней назад
That's a rational and fair point. There is one objection that could be raised by a religious person - the argument would be based on 2 Corinthians 11:14 which says "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." Joseph had a long history of scrying. This demonic practice has led some to believe many of the "angels" who were appearing to him and to others were actually demonic. If a person believes that Satan is able to mislead by causing visions or possessions (just like the demonic possession at the First Vision, just before Joseph saw the figure of light), a person could just as readily conclude that this is by far the most rational and likely way it happened

@marcus.H
@marcus.H 15 дней назад
@@reedolson9308 If they believed it was real, especially at later times, this would indicate they were probably not taking hallucinogens, since that would give them a good reason to question what had been seen. Certainly peer pressure may (in theory) have played some role, but actually, this seems less likely because it appears that some of the men (Oliver Cowdery for example) had on previous occasions said he was unable at that time to see them. So he wasn't afraid of telling Joseph to his face "I'm not seeing this". This makes peer pressure a less likely explanation, though it has to be considered as at least possible.
