A suggestion for a new topic: Your Parker 2120 is now quite mature in terms of systems installs & mods. A 'tour' of all the electronic & electrical systems and the choices you have made in installing them would, I think, be very instructive. I haven't found such a 'tour' on your channel so far, so thought I would suggest it. Thanks for this video, too.
This is the kind of random knowledge that a casual boater would never know, awesome video! I've always wondered my GPS always seemed to fluctuate when I get close to channel markers and I had autopilot following my old tracks!
Cap I absolutely love this video. I always hated the fact I would go right by a channel marker and my gps would say is farther away then is was. I had no idea could use another antenna source this is absolutely awesome and you did inside vs outside. Way to go captain
Thank you Richard and I'm glad you like the video it really helps us to compare And I want to share with you guys so you see the difference thanks for your positive feedback captain
Believe if it was me , I would have been looking for good location outside cabin up higher. If you need to drill a hole to run the coax cable in, then you seal it up with some caulk surely no problems. Regardless of how you want it, you have improved it. Thanks Capt.!
One more video with complete information and the good reason why we must upgrading gps antenna for more accurate navigation system also safety features.thanks captain.stay safe captain
Hi Capt.... Thank you for this Super-Helpful video! Our last boat had an external GPS antennas mounted high above the flybridge, which did great. I've always wondered how good the reception is with the internal antenna on our Garmin 1040XS in our pilothouse. On occasion I've checked to see how many satellites I receive, but it never occurred to me to check the accuracy 'system/GPS' section of the plotter... I will do so today. By the way, at times, in very tight channels, the Garmin 1040XS has shown me 40+ feet off, up on land! Yes, really! Thank you once again!
Wow captain 40' is a lot especially when it's raining or is cloudy the satellite strength are not the greatWow captain 40' is a lot especially when it's raining or is cloudy the satellite strength are not that great, Garmin do this chart plautter weak because they want you to purchase an external antenna to spend more money it's very sad that we have to go this route to get good accuracy they should do it right out of the market when they make this GPS chart Ploutter. And please when you check let me know how was your accuracy without an external antenna
@@OutOnTheReef Hi Capt.... I learn something new with each of your videos! I did not know an external antenna was even an option with our Garmin 1040XS. The canal I live on is only 80' - 100' wide. The Garmin GPS will sometimes show the boat navigating through peoples back yards! I will check it this week, but I also want to check it when away from the house and out near some navigation marks... I'll let you know the results.... Thank you!
Thank you captain and the installation indoors is probably the same as outdoors just a little bit less signal I think it's worth it to keep it indoors it will last forever thanks for watching doing your breakfast and have a extra cup of coffee from me☕️☕️
Hi Capt... I'm 'reporting back' , as I promised.... Here are the results of our Garmin 1040XS. To Start With; It was a clear day. I have no external antenna. The boat was on the boat-lift; not moving/not navigating. I tested it over a 30-40 minute period. The GPS was showing seven satellites the entire time, with VERY strong reception. And, it was consistently showing 7' to 8' accuracy-range. The worst it showed was 9'... BUT, here is the interesting (or crazy? unusual? scary? ) part. Like I said, I was on our boat-lift, on the east side of our canal. The GPS was showing our boat to be in the neighbors yard, over 120' to the west of me! The GPS is 'saying' only a 7' to 8' variance, yet I was shown to be at LEAST 80' away from where it said I was.... If I had been relying on the GPS coming into this 80' - 100' wide channel/canal. I would have ended up with the boat sitting up in my neighbors yard! (They would not like that! ☺)
Wow cap. Tha scary 😨 but posible that that day the internal antenna was mot working good because those satellites are always moving Thanks for reporting and yes 7 to 8 is not bad but check some other time and you will see a huge difference cap. Have a awesome day
hey Captain. love the channel. question- do you know if I should install the Garmin 24xd external antenna and a Garmin steady cast antenna or does the 24xd do it all? I have a center console , thanks for your great videos.
Hello cap Im not sure because i only have the external antenna installed and is fast and accurate specially wen powering on the unit is fast loading, thanks for being part of my channel cap ,hope this helped
Right on Capt. Sweet sled! Thanks for doing this it was exactly the info I was looking for. I have the same MFD as you in my boat. Its installed in a custom console that is mounted overhead with a fiberglass hard top over it. When I'm offshore I keep getting intermittent "satellite signal lost " warnings and the chart plotter will completely stop tracking me. Very frustrating when you cant see land. Again, its an intermittent loss of satellites. It sometimes looses signal for several hours before it regains a connection or signal and starts working again... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and so on.. Seems like the farther offshore I go the more it looses its signal. Weird, I know. I've confirmed the chart plotter is operating on the latest version of software etc .. I've lost trust in the internal antenna so I started exploring options and stumbled across your video here. . I'm thinking I need this external GPS antenna as my display doesn't have a clear view of the sky. Looks like a plug and play installation for the most part. I already have the nmea 2000 network to plug into too. Thanks for the upload I'm going give this a try and hope this works for me!
Awesome cap. And yes try it you won't regret it, i love how mine performs, before it too about 2 minutes To find the satellite at startup But after I install the external antenna right away it works it's incredible you'll love a captain and remember if you want to Help me make more this video if you use the link of my Amazon on the discussion below it will get me a commission and I'll be able to make more videos and if you do let me know so I can thank you , Thank you for watching my channel captain if I can help in any other way please let me know navigate safe👍⚓️🛥
Hey mate just curious couldnt you use the garmin auto pilot sensor to interface with mfd? I bought a raymine150 n retured it got rec 40 with 2l pump..since i have 8412xsv. Great content ,super love ut and appreciate what you do.
Afternoon Cap, does the internal antenna support GLONAS? I noticed in the video it was off but the external antenna had it on. Curious if the additional satellites would make the difference in the dilution of precision (variance)? Great informative video regardless.
New Subscriber to your channel. Just wanted to say thanks for all your videos. Garmin should give you a referral bonus because I bought a Garmin Chartplotter and an AutoPilot set-up because of your recommendation. I'm also gonna pull the trigger on an external antenna. I'm near Davie, maybe sometime we can get together and talk boating and installation. I'm going to do the install myself. Appreciate any advise.
That is awesome captain and hopefully one day they'll see my videos it was and remember that using my links to purchase your items and Amazon helps me to make more videos Amazon will give me a commission and helps me make more of these types of videos captain really appreciate your help
Hi Capt... another update; I'm sure I would benefit with an external antenna, like you suggested.... Today I was out on the boat for about 6 hours. The Garmin 1040XS was receiving 12-13 satellites most of the day, and with strong signals. The GPS was showing only 21-22' accuracy. Since that could be in all directions around the boat, it means I could be 42-44' off course of where it was showing me to be. That would be no big deal today as I was mostly in the wide-open waters of the Pungo River and Pamlico Sounds, but coming back into our canal, it would not be reliable at night..... Interestingly, the GPS was showing only 21-22' accuracy, but when doing so, it WAS showing me in the center of the canal as I was coming in....
Hello cap. And that is weird that it was off 22 feet but it was right at center, that is hard to understand, thanks for the update, and as i use my internal antenna i will keep you posted an how accurate it is and if is worth getting 1 for your boat ,have a awesome night cap. From OOTR🛥👋
Hi Captain, I just purchased the Garmin Steadycast heading sensor that I will hook up to the NMEA 2000 for my Garmin 1223XSV. I would like to hook up an external antenna as well. Is there an antenna without the heading sensor combined with it? Hope all is well.
Hello John I am not sure captain if there's one without it but but if you have this 1 install would it wouldn't mess up your heading you think you think with all the other equipment?
Unrelated to this vid, but we’re curious what insurance co you use for your Parker? We have a 22’ c-dory we’d like to take to the Bahamas but some companies won’t offer Bahamas coverage for this size boat.
Hello my insurance does not cover me neither but that does not stop me from going to bahamas, hardly no company will cover you because of size and not having more then 1 engine, and if you want you insurance to make them cover you, you ha e to make a flotilla witch is a group of boat going together and they will cover you , most insurance do, hope thos helps cap.
@@OutOnTheReef bro i have important question to you about battery can power electric trolling motor or other boat components or monitor, is portable power station or solar generator they called like bluetti, jackery or ecoflow do think will work in minkotta trolling motor better?
@@OutOnTheReefsolar generator like ecoflow mostly use by campervan that have portable freezer or refrigerator, it can power also all regular number of appliances in house in 12 hours, and most importantly in can fully charge within more than 3 to 4hours via foldable 400watts solar panel.
That is true captain I agree with you a 100% that's why this company's do these things poorly that way later you have to spend more money to make it function better it's all about making more money for this company very sad I agree with you
Dude. Why the face cover ? Especially if you’re explaining electrical info. Sometimes it is hard to understand you… Are you running from the police ? Just wondering…
Ur silly… I’m in process of figuring out our wiring and jesus is killing me with this lil girl. She’s a cute sweet boy glides comfortably on the water but whomever had her before the previous owners Wow…🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
