Would Haymitch have volunteered for Peeta in Catching Fire?

Hi friends! Today we dive into Catching Fire, and look at Haymitch's agreements to Katniss and Peeta.
Haymitch promises both Katniss and Peeta that he will do everything in his power to protect the other. Additionally, he promises Katniss to volunteer for Peeta if he is reaped. We never find out if Haymitch would have kept his word, as he ended up being the mentor after Peeta volunteered in his place. Obviously this is great for the rebels and their plan, which begs the question, was this the plan all along?

Hi friends! A quick reminder not to post spoilers for "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". The book isn't out in many countries yet, and won't be for another few weeks, so it's incredibly inconsiderate. Also, many of you have been asking when I'll make videos about it. I won't be making videos about it until the movie adaptation is released, as this firstly gives everyone time to buy and read the book, and secondly will allow us to use the secondary canon that is a movie to base ideas off of. Fun fact: Haymitch is the only tribute in the history of the hunger games to be reaped for two Quarter Quells. The odds were never in his favor

I believe Heavensbee set it up for Haymitch to be reaped, knowing peta would volunteer, therefore keeping Haymitch as mentor to help coordinate. Like I've said before I don't believe the reaping is ever truly random.

Poor little Haymitch! Had to be reaped for 2 Quarter Quells, lost his ally in his first Games, AND almost had to volunteer! I feel bad that some people think he's weird, but I think he'd be a cool Mentor!

Great analysis! It's definitely possible that some reapings were rigged by the rebels in Catching Fire, hard to say how many though

I think all of them were rigged because how did brother and sisters get together, The two hiders got choose together, Beete and wiress, and Annie and finnick. And they never said anything about volunteering for anyone but Annie and haymitch.

@@doldfamily9983they didn’t volunteer, at least there is no such information. but they tried to stop the games, so they prolly were not happy about the third quarter quell either. Moreover, it is possible that the Capitol rigged theirs cause they were quite popular

Effie has a slight hesitation before she reads it, and we know Effie -even if she doesn’t know it- kind of wants to protect Haymitch. So what if she read his name, knowing Peeta would volunteer, so Haymitch would be “safe” in the Capitol.

I don’t really know how many victors there were from district 6 but it could be that the morphlings reaping was rigged since they both happen to be similar to each other. Same could go for cashmere and gloss but they probably volunteered since they are career tributes.

I never thought about Haymich having to volunteer but you did a great job at explaining what would happen. Also, maybe in the future can you do a character spotlight on Finnick?

I think that the 74th was rigged, because it litteraly says, (I didn't read it in English, since I am only 50% English and 50% Dutch, and my Dutch cousin lent it to me, so I don't EXACTLY know what it says) 'Your name is only in there once, you won't get reaped.', and then to have a twelve year old girl, who is quite weak and wouldnt be able to defend herself be picked, is quite 'suspicious'!

I mean, that is how random chance works. Her name was only in there once, so the chance was very low. But not zero

I think a fair majority were rigged in the 75th Games, and wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the other games were tweaked to be more interesting. Gale's name is in 42 times but Prim's is only in once? Cashmere and Gloss were reaped together? Finnick and Annie were reaped together? A LOT a lot of the tributes were a part of the rebel forces. What actually ARE the odds? And the rebels absolutely would not have left Haymitch and Peeta's reaping up to chance. I *almost* feel a little pity for Brutus, volunteering to be in what he had no idea was never a real Games to begin with.

I think Effie knew the Rebel plan and she had to say "Haymitch Abernathy" knowing that Peeta would volunteer as tribute so that Haymitch can work with Plutarch and the Rebels. That's just my thought...

the choice could be rigged. it may be possible that Haymitch's name was on both labels because they knew that Peeta would volunteer to be in the arena with Katniss

It being rigged wouldn't be a huge surprise but if it wasn't I feel like Haymitch would have volunteered. He could be closer to Katniss and the other tributes so he could have a better chance of protecting her. Also if he kept his promise then Katniss may trust him more which may help her be more open to allies. I feel like they had 2 plans depending on weather Haymitch or Peta was in the games. If Haymitch was in the games he would protect Katniss and some of the other people would tell Peta the plan asap.

I feel like maybe Haymitch told Effie enough about the plan so she wold agree to say his name regardless as to what name was drawn, especially with the way she says Haymitch in the film where she hesitates with the h as if she’s either considering wether or not she should lie about the name

it's entirely possible that plutarch rigged haymitch's name into the bowl twice because the rebels were aware peeta would want to volunteer to personally protect katniss. After all, he did set many other things up for the sake of the rebel plan. But considering the way Haymitch reacted to Peeta volunteering, maybe even Haymitch wasn't aware of this. Either that or the odds really were in their favor.

Ugh! Peeta is such a burden why did he volounteer. Why does he think he can protect katniss, more like she protects him. The amount of times katniss has had to save him in the arena, its ridiculous.

I think Finnick, Annie, Beetee, Wiress, and Haymitchs readings were all rigged. The Capitol wanting Finnick to go back in but for him to be at a disadvantage. Reaping Annie makes Mags go in, putting Finnick at a physical disadvantage. Beetee and Wiress were smart and would help execute the plan. Haymitch needed to guide Katniss and they needed Peeta to make Katniss look better. The baby bomb could have been Haymitchs idea so that they get more sponsors and Katniss is seen as an unfortunate soul in the districts and reminds people of the pain the Capitol puts mothers and their children through

But what happens if more than one person volunteer? Like if someone volunteer for the name that is pulled, but a third person got involved. What happens then? Do they pick the last person? Is there a vote? Flip a coin?

Tbh I don't think Peeta would've agreed to play part in the war. Coin *sent* him the capitol. He didn't volunteer like most of them. Also if Peeta was reaped and Haymitch did volunteer, let's be honest he would've gone *insane*

I was thinking about the reaping for the male tribute for the 75th games, would the 2 slips of paper have haymitchs name on them so that peeta would volunteer for him so haymitch would be mentor and help with the rebel plan, if that makes sense.

I think that cashmeres reaping was rigged, in the book haymitch says “I was the sample the one to hold up to the your finnicks and johnnas and cashmeres” maybe this has to do with her being slightly rebellious? So maybe instead of being put in by the rebake she was put in by snow

All Cashmere could have become a problem and her and Gloss’s death would silence her and their family. Enobaria would provide great entertainment while killing someone who was rebellious Almost everyone else were rebels Peeta helps promote the star crossed lovers Katniss and Johanna had to The Capitol wanted Brutus to win

Maybe if Haymitch was chosen, it wouldn’t matter too much since I feel like this plan has been made before the 75th hunger games. The plan might have started after Katniss won, or they already learn what snow wanted to do for the third quarter quell, since he wasn’t happy with her and Peeta winning. (Idk this is just my theory)

The 75th games were def rigged like considering 1 and 4 have larger victor pools the probability that cashmere and gloss then finnick and annie are slim. Then the fact that a lot of tributes were personally punished by the capital and were rebellious.

For the revolution to begin ,it was imperative for Haymitch to recruit the previous victors behind the scenes to help Katniss in the arena. Haymitch couldn't accomplish that if he was reaped...so it was all planned out by Plutarch and Haymitch for Haymitch to be on the sidelines helping..so the reaping was most likely rigged for Haymitch to be picked, knowing that Peeta would surely volunteer to be with Katniss. Haynitch knew all along he wouldn't have to volunteer since the reaping was rigged for Peeta to volunteer.

i’m certain that the 74 reaping were rigged (and many games prior to it) however i genuinely don’t think/know if the 75 reaping was rigged; seeing as it was literally a 50/50 shot either way haha. either it was a “real/genuine” reaping, or haymith & effie (possibly even plutarch) colluding in order to ensure that haymitch did NOT get reaped (seeing as both haymitch and peeta would’ve volunteered for the other). ig we’ll never know hahaha

I saw this thing on Pinterest where the final, symbolic Hunger Games were going to happen, and Katniss was supposed to tell Snow's granddaughter she would be in it. Snow's granddaughter is surprised and happy about this, which Katniss finds strange. The granddaughter tells Katniss that the people are chosen before the reaping, basically saying that the Hunger Games are rigged. Its probably not canon, just something interesting I thought i'd share.
