If we take their word at face value, the way I see it is he went on even after 3 years of having been broken up to talk about his failed relationship of 8 years with a tone and expression that doesn't hint at any level of closure (and even considered getting back together as a possibility). The way he described it was that they were best friends before they even began dating, in all likelihood they knew each other for much longer than 8 years.
