Old comment I know but he explained to balance the ratio but they are simply hindering the performance greatly. Think most of us would only agree strait stock would be the best comparison and that is only from a stock point of view because different cars will respond differently with various wheels. This however frustrated me as a experiment.

Im real confused as to why the C5Z had 245's on it, front or rear. Mine is stock sized with 265's up front, and 295's in the rear.

Tried to make the tire to weight ratio equal on both cars. The Z06 weighs a lot less so we handicapped it with smaller tires.

After selling my 09 z06 I miss driving... I was looking at boss 302, and the gt350 but then remembered there is a c5z06 at a much lower price. Plus having owned a 2002 c5 I have a bit of an idea maintenance wise. The C5 is still a beast of a car even for new sports cars.

@@russandadamsgarage105 while I've got you here, quick question as I was a bit confused during the video: You seemed to reduce the tire/wheel size on the c5 at the rear to 245's. Why did you do this? In one part of the video, you said you went back to the OEM size, that it would hold more speed but that it drove much worse. Please elaborate. How did reducing tire and wheel size effect the overal poise, communicativeness and balance of the chassis? I have a 1993 Z28, which has RS rims and 205 all around. I have been staggered by how much peformance these small tires provide and how easy they are to drive around. It seems that having less grip actually makes the car much more predictable and some less tangible sprightliness which i'm choking up to unsprung weight. Does this match your experince with c5?

this is exactly the question I have been mulling. I just bought a pair of rears for the front and was going to try to shoehorn 335's on the rears, but having gotten input from a real racer, decided to go with 315 square, R888Rs' Thank you so much for the data confirming this setup.

Appreciated the scientific approach. I could close a little bit on the GT350 on Nitto NT05's. Am now trying 295 square Michelin PS2's. It's an '01, with maybe 25-30K track miles on it. Been using cheapo tires, so now lookng forward to how it drives on the PS2's. from your data, looks like I'll be fine. thanks.

Update for the curious, let a 460RWHP Viper all day yesterday. He couldnt close the gap. Looking forward to seeing how I do out with my friends GT350R. He could barely gap me on the NT05's, and now I gots betta tyahs!

Just caught this video. Great piece. I remember when the C5 Z06 came out I was stricken. Shorter trans gearing for track work, titanium exhaust welded in an Argon atmosphere so as to not weaken the welds, screaming LS6. I was about 27. Now in my 40’s the GT350 is also an amazing machine. And I’ve owned 4 Stangs in my life. But the C5 Z06 is nicely affordable, and with the right mods can keep up with today’s latest toys. My 13 GT is just about paid off, think it’s time to find a Z to add to the stable.

In real life, both cars set up properly, that Mustang has nothing for that old Vette, nothing, other than slicks the best tire for that Vette are Good Year F1 R compound, fastest treaded tire for that car, they did everything they could to make sure and hold the Vette back and give the Mustang a chance, don't even get me going on durability issues, those Vettes are bullet proof, best track car you can buy for the money.

Tire to weight ratio?? Omg. You can't simply take the difference in weight between the cars and then multiply that ratio to the tire width. That makes ABSOLUTELY NO sense. For beginners the relationship between tire width and grip is not linear. I cringed so hard when I saw that

Like most i dont grasp thr concept of crippling the Z06s traction for the sake of the weight to contact patch ratio...the car was designed to operate on a certain size tire, its like taking a Huracan and Tracking it against a crown vic and putting a parachute on the huracan then posting numbers saying the vic was faster because they had the same aero resistance..

So as someone with Conti DW's in a C5Z, are the tires that bad? They've seemed fine so far, but that is of course just daily use and no track. I'm probably missing something, but it seems counter intuitive to put smaller tires on a car like the C5Z. Is there some benefit to this?

Smaller diameter tires improve braking and acceleration, as well as reducing unsprung mass. GT350R, ZL1 1LE, and Z28 all us the same trick. Here's a video on why smaller diameter tires win races. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HzBq_oPcEkU.html As for the DW's - The construction of the 275's(nylon) are totally different that the construction of the 295(steel) resulting in a very disconnected feeling when driven at the limit because the tires react so differently to cornering loads. That said, they look good, they're great in standing water, and they're comfortable going down the road. The on limit handling is straight up dangerous though. That is why tire rack wouldn't offer them as a matched set.

Why not do the test stock for stock with 265/295s on the Z06 and the stock width on the GT350 with the same tire? This to me is a test with too many extraneous variables.

I threw you a subscribe...I like the vid! I relocated from Pa 2 yrs ago and live about 35min south of Road Atlanta. I built one off forced induction systems for 15 yrs in Pa, but upon relocating here, decided to return my C5Z to it's roots a bit. I have currently adapted the C7Z front aero and am fabricating a slightly widened custom rear over-fender and will run a square 18x11 with 295 MPSS's. My goal was to be able to rotate the tires for wear, and also get rid of a bit of the inherent push. I have Oconnell adjustable bars on it also, so I can dial in a little push for safety if need be. This video was pretty spot on and a great comparison that you don't see too often...which is, the new weapons, versus some old seasoned good cars, if even slightly modified. Would really like to see the comparison on the typical road racer setup of C5Z rear rims on four corners with some MPSS's versus the GT350.

Thanks, glad you liked it. Sounds like a sweet project. We contemplated the 285/35-18 MPSS on all 4 corners, but I'm not a fan of the 18x10.5's up front. I don't like the steering feel, and I thought it'd be too fast. The 18x9.5 C6 Z06 wheels have great steering feel, and as a bonus they provide better brake cooling. I think a 265/35-18 MPSS would be the perfect match against the gt350. They have very narrow rain grooves like the gt350's tires.

I've always loved the C5's and for the cost of one now, it would be hard to beat as a track car. I was really close to getting a GT350 but could justify the $70k. This pretty much validates what I thought, it comes down to the driver.

Us too, but the MPSS isn't available in the Z06 stock sizes, in fact the only tire available is the OEM Goodyear Eagle F1 supercar. -Russ

and parenthetically, the NT05's are at least 3-4 secs faster than stock sizes in cheapo 340 treadwear tires. I had to learn how to drive with better grip and braking. Still a tail happy mo'fo' leaving turns 8 and 3B at Pacific, however.

The c5 z06 is better. C5 z will walk it in the straights, out brake and has better mid corner grip. The grand sport ls3 will pull it out of the hole from a dig or 20 roll but the horribly soft front sway bar makes it suffer so much on corner entry the c5 z will outlap the gs also

You can’t compare 2 different tires. Putting on a Hoosier A7 on either car will destroy the other. Doesn’t prove anything.

The weight difference is too great but I’d still get the gt350 because of its uniqueness and it would be faster than most aftermarket cars if supercharged or turbocharged

I drove the GT350. Its a dog down low and needs to be spun very high in the rpm band.I would stick with the GT500 anyday. Very loud and attracts a lot of attention from cops in order to stay in the heart of the power band. For 5k you can get a used supercharger kit and bigger injectors and run 7-8 lbs on the stock motor for that c5 and rock that stangs world. Swap over to c6zo6 sway bars and shocks or Bilsteins . Without tubbing the rear 305's are best you are going to fit on a C5. Use Michelin sport cup 2 or Nitto - NT01 if you want to rock the track.

315/30R19 fit on the front of the GT350. Some of the R's got shipped out with a rear tire on a front rim. Also the R front springs are $40 MSRP each if you want a stiffer, slightly shorter front spring. Might be worth it if you are already in there to do camber plates like the school cars.

the 18x10.5 square setup works really well for a budget setup. Here is a video of my old C5 at NCM on 18x10.5 rears square setup with 295 MPSS's. This car does have a front splitter and rear wing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rZKKkYyrWEg.html It would demolish the GT350.

Just the sound of the 5.2l dual overhead cam flat plain crank v8 is worth it over the vette. trully a unique engine compared to a traditional pushrod, cross plane v8.

Theres no more annoying sound than a mustang engine. They have the most treble high screechy tone of any modern motor. The LS6 sounds so much better. Plus mustangs are sports cars for women.

Because a 17 year old corvette with proper tires can still match it on the road coarse. Now a lightly used c6 zo6 is also cheaper than a gt350 even a used gt350! That car would leave the gt350 in the dust. Weight is the main problem for the new generation mustangs. GT350’s are way overrated due their unique engines but nothing more!

The only reason why the vette is cheaper is because they devaluate 😂 not the gt350 tho they stay close to what they where sold brand new🤷🏻‍♂️ corvettes are more expensive when brand new

Even with smaller tires and unsafe at that, the Shelby is still a loser so what's your point here? Put the OEM tires on the ~18 year old Z06 and even GT350R would lose. And for less money. Just because you frod fans pay more for these cars than they are worth does not take away from the fact that C5 Z06 is a superior car in every way.

I have a C6 Z06 and a GT350R, I am pretty sure my C6 Z06 will thrash the GT350R on a track day, however I really like driving the GT350R more, maybe because it’s new and the Z06 is 11 years old now.

245's are the wrong size obviously, also the 315's on the Z06 wouldn't Destroy the 350, closer but put a real driver in both cars and the 350 will edge it out.

I think there's some time to be made up if the GT350 owner wasn't (even if just a little) worried about wrecking it. There's a big difference in driving a $60,000 new car vs a $20,000 old car. Unless you have throw away money, but then these wouldn't be the cars you'd be driving.

The tire rationale is baloney. Let the Z06 run as it was meant to same as the Ford. The C5 is a far better track weapon than that fat-ass Mustang.

That is the exact opposite of my experience. I had a C5 Z06 on a 300TW OEM sized tires and was never passed by a gt350/r. Except for in the pits when on two occasions the flatbed trucks carting them off to for a new engine passed me. But to be fair my car wasn't running either so doesn't count.

Laguna Seca official track times to use as a barometer- C5 ZO6 Steve Millen: 1:57.73 in the wet. How wet, who knows. 20 seconds slower wet? I doubt it. BOSS 302 Laguna Seca Randy Pobst: 1:43.00 C6 ZO6 Driver Unknown: 1:40.09 Nissan GT-R Driver Unknown: 1:40.45 BOSS 302 Laguna Seca Driver Unknown: 1:39.50 Camaro ZL1 Randy Pobst: 1:39.98 Corvette ZR1 Driver Unknown: 1:38.70 GT350R Randy Pobst: 1:36.11 Other cars running faster in the 1:38's are- ZR1, CTS-V (GenIII), Stingray, F12 Berlinetta. That's some stout company...for a 'Mustang.' The production car track record is 1:28.65 set by Randy Pobst (Viper ACR of course). On track days I've been involved in (either as a spectator or driver) the GT350(R or non-R) is a tough pass. It really makes me question the zest and or competence of the driver in the GT350. I mean, it's laid official track times faster than the 458 Italia. Now, you're basically telling me that a C5 ZO6 will run with a 458?? The results of this testing appears to be skewed.

Cherry pick data much? All of the lap times you quote are for crap tires on fast cars. Except the GT350R Convenient that you left out the C6 Z06 1:34 lap and the C6 ZR1 1:33 lap... on cups1's. A slower tire than the Cup2 that comes on the GT350R On the right tires a C5 Z06 will EASILY beat a 458. I've tracked a 458 on bridgestones, it was disappointingly slow. A C5 Z06 on Cup2's or trofeo R's would destroy it. -Russ

Oh, so you're telling me that a C5 ZO6 is running lap times with a C6 ZR1...??? Maybe there's a reason why I left those times out. 1) they are faster than the GT350 and 2) they are not pertinent to the times that a C5 ZO6 would do.

seriously the quantity of the gt 350 is 3x better.... and so is the motor. the technology is what you're paying for along with the quality. not a great comparison

Jerry Nosowsky I think he's more showing if you want a track car is better to start with something thsts cheaper. track days are seriously hard on cars. that being said, it's pretty impressive that a 15 year old car with. 120 less hp keeps up just fine.

The vette is just so much car for the money. The gt350 is far over rated by todays standards. The z06 is hands down a much better deal. It also looks 10 times better. Mustangs are for teenage girls.

When you are on track with these guys, the comparison seems very fair. Ihave to thrash my 01 (on Nitto NT05 cheapos) to keep up with the GT 350's and then one of those guys goes andbuys the 500! Anxious to see what my old car can do with some decent grip. Fun conversation.

The 87 through 93 5 liter Mustang came with drum brakes on the back speaks volumes of its track potential those cars you would have to spend thousands to get that car to handle on the level of a C5 ZO6 you are insane

Mustangs are girls cars......with that said, considering the z06 was built SEVENTEEN years ago, the gt350 is embarrassing. Theres a reason they didn't compare with a c7 z06, cause the gt350 is an over rated car for modern day performance.

NK 60 and only took how big of an engine to put out LESS hp than that 5.2. The Shelby will hold its value and likely be a collector car...the vette is just another vette. Nice car and plenty fast, but the definition of a midlife crisis car or as we call them around here the old man driving to the country club car....lol

NK 60 funny too the 03-04 cobra that was literally half the price would outrun the base c5 vette and stay with the z06. I had one for 4 years and my brother had a z06, and it took everything his car had to barely edge me out in a drag. Funny thing was for a grand with a pulley swap and tune, my cobra was showing his double the price vette it's tailights when I finally sold it.
