My name is Aaron Short and I am a professional singer/guitarist. Originally from Suffolk, England I studied and gigged in London for 9 years and moved to NYC in 2010.
I love music, songwriting and the guitars and gear that I use to create it. My channel consists of performances, tutorials, demos and reviews. If you would like me to review your product please get in touch.
New videos are posted at least once per week and my original music is available on Apple Music and Spotify etc.
What brand, type & size of strings do you prefer to use on this special Strings choice. I recently purchased a New (NOS) Fender VG- 5, American/ USA version. I really like the quality of the guitar, fabulous body & neck, etc. Thanks for a great video!!!
Awesome video! I liked how with your EQ it got closer. I think it's just missing the percussion of the instrument that a mic is capable of capturing. The pickup sound is super different to be in front of the guitar, so it's crazy how similar it gets. Very well done, thank you for doing this.
For the same reason I can't own a Taylor I like A. B is scooped so there's too much clang on the high strings with no covering that sound up with the mids. I hate that rattle sound on acoustics.
Thanks for sharing the unveiling Aaron. I have the old VL3e which has had a new motherboard fitted a couple of years ago but has been as good as ever since. Is the unit and the new software any different to the old unit and software and is it available to download anywhere?
I might get curious enough to try one of these. Your tutorial and tips are a huge help. Will see how it goes. I have my workflow with my pedal board and it's pretty sweet. But this is smaller and more compact. I would also add that three button switch for the looper as you suggested in your live stream.
I don’t think it will add anything that your pedalboard gives you (I have seen your board!). It would let you travel super light but I don’t think you are worried about that are you? Being able to easily record the gigs direct is a huge plus to me in order to listen back and self evaluate. Of course you could just add a small portable recorder to your board for that.
Just got mine today. It is better than my FG5. The setup was perfect. The best setup I've ever seen on an acoustic guitar. The strings were low. No fret buzz. Just perfection. The Chinese are knocking it out of the park with their guitars.
@@aaronshortmusic it was set up like a guitar. Or should I say an electric guitar. When I first took it out of the box? And out of the case I was like wow. There's going to be a lot of front buzz on this. No dead frets whatsoever. It doesn't have a bone nut or saddle, but it's actually louder with the Urea nut and saddle. I own a lot of guitars. The quality on this one is the best. Well my fg9 is the best. But my fg9 needed some TLC in reference to the setup. Between Yamaha and Eastman, these Chinese people are making exceptional guitars.
@@dr.stevenpennym.d.3241 Every guitar is different and that goes for tone and setup wherever it’s made. A good guitar is a good guitar and when we find a good one we should hang on to it!
Aaron, you mentioned in this live stream (using OnSong) flicking the screen up to see the last lines of some lyrics. I suggest you use autoscrolling or set duration. This way during the songs performance you will not have to do so. I would bet you are a pro at flicking it! You stated you like to tap dance with your pedals. One less thing to have to move for while playing! Cheers and thanks for the streams!!!
Thank you but it’s hard to get the timing right. I saw someone using tracks lately and the lyrics were synced to the track. That’s very cool. I try to make the lyrics all fit on the screen and if they don’t then I should really use my AirTurn pedal but I just use my finger lol.
Awesome Aaron, Yes show us some VL3X titbits like setting the click in headphones and the harmony set to increase harmony accuracy etc.. I reckon it will whet the appetite for future playing musicans/users when they see the functional ability of this remarkable unit. The new stock of VL3X is good news. Rock on bro.
There is still nothing like this pedal out there and I’ve REALLY looked for alternatives. In the end I bought a back up. I’ve happily used one for nearly 10 years now and upwards of 1500 shows. Great view Aaron, subscribed.
I'd like to see it compared to the Nux Optima Air which is IMHO the best value for money so far concerning IR. I have to redo all my IRs by the way, because my actuals one were passing through a Behringer UMC404HD, and now I have a Clarett+, it's night and day. Also I tried to find an anechoic chamber in my area to go to make the WAV to generate IR, without success atm. I think the anechoic room is a must to make perfect IRs, otherwise the mic also picks up the room response.
People say that the room isn’t really included in an acoustic IR since the IR’s are so short. I have never tried an anechoic room though. I still like the NUX but the TD2 does a lot more.
If you go Bose. The 16 will be better than the 8. I have the 32 plus Sub 2. Way overkill but I’ve done a 4 piece band with the T4S. But with whichever you choose. Get the T4S
Good show Aaron. I have a VL3 and haven’t used it live yet. Any video tutorials would be super helpful. I use a Digitech Voice 2. Two buttons and fool proof. But want to set up songs on VL3 for vocals primarily with my 90s band. Would be super effective
Thanks! It would be great for that. You could have vocal delays and vocal distortion etc. It really adds a lot to the performance. You can also use it as an IEM rig as you can feed the band mix into the pedal and mix that with your vocals and guitar. Cool stuff!
Have you seen the new Cole Clark studio (SAN1EC) line of guitars? Very affordable and says it uses the PG3 pickup system with strip piezo. I wonder if it sounds close the the full PG3 system? You should review one.
I don't know; you're giving it great reviews for being what it says it is (but with some incredibly useful added features) but dissing it for not being what it doesn't claim to be. I think the Tone master Pro device meets your wants, but the amps are meant to be stand-alone products, ya know?
I’m just trying to see both sides. Funnily enough the TMP board and FR came out shortly after I made this video and they are more what I wanted. I do think the standalone amps were a genius idea though.
Sounds ok! But a Fishman Prefix Pro, Plus, Blender, includes ALL of the needed controls. Phase, notch, contour, frequency, eq, etc. It's well worth the investment.
@@joelkevinstewart5594 I like the Fishman matrix and mic systems but a Soundhole pickup is for people that don’t like an undersaddle pickup in their guitar. It’s just a different approach. I personally prefer a system installed permanently in a guitar that I use regularly.
@@Olleetheowl Have you taken this to one of those events and had it happen? If not then I don’t think it’s fair on companies to make such wild claims on the Internet.
@@aaronshortmusic the mics that are used, are usually more robust than the basic recorders. But can’t tolerate the same full load as a 32bit float. The first time that I tried out my X8 was at a preserved steam rally, I had set my levels for the trains passing me and they were fine. But those that blew their whistles close to me, clipped the mics. The tracks were not recoverable,. I got around it by editing out the blown bits. And went back the following week , armed with better knowledge. Another time at a wedding, I was recording the first dance from the D.J. He was a bit of a dick. He wouldn’t let me plug into his desk. And so I set two off my mics up near the speakers. Abut a dozen bars in he rammed the volume up for about ten seconds , and gave me the “V-sign”. The track was unusable. So I had to download it off the internet. And spend nearly an hour blending it in to the edit. So. Yes, I act do know what I’m talking about. …. … do you?
Matons are super tinny sounding. They dont sound good. I honestly think alot of marketing and promotion has brainwashed people to think they sound good, when they dont! Alot of them are all tin. Sound horrible while singing.
First of all you can’t say that all of one brands guitars sound good or bad. Every brand makes different models and there will always be some that people prefer over others. I did a blind test with the Maton, a Martin and a Rainsong and the Maton came out on top. I also think the last few that I have played sound excellent acoustically and hold their own.
I have and have had many Martins (d28, hd28, d45, D1, D18, M36, J-40), Gibsons (dove, hummingbird, j45, lady, j200) a few Taylors, a couple blueridge guitars and a few other brands. If I was forced to pick one guitar and could never own another it would be my J-40. I can take this guitar and sit in with anyone with any genre. This guitar took some learning on how to approach. But you can really dig in or just relax and let it ring. Can't say enough good things about this guitar.
Good review of a very deep pedal. I do have reservations about TC products in general. I have seen many comments on various TC products being unreliable, they get glitchy or just stop working. More than a few.
Hi Aaron, Great video, thanks! I was looking at both the the Two Notes Cab m+ and waza air headphone for my amp. I have not demo'd yet either products but have been looking on RU-vid so far. But just to give some context. I have a pair of sony MDR-7506 headphones which I could use with the TN cab m+. I mostly play sitting down in a static position and from the demos I have heard of the Waza Airs I would either use surround or stage and not bother with the static mode with the gyro. Is there a point of considering the Waza's if I don't use the gyro or are the price of them worth getting for the sound experience and the amp in the room feel? From my understanding the waza's give you a stereo spatial effect even with the surround and the cab m+ headphone out is only mono. Or would the best of both worlds be use the cab m+ for the different power amp and cabinet choices combined with the waza headphones? Thanks in advanced.
Have you found a way to use cc messages? On VL2 I could control the harmony level with my midi expression pedal. VL3e I have to use another non-midi expression pedal. The midi assignment chart is way more limited. I have to say, I feel like that’s a step in the wrong direction.
@@aaronshortmusic I really like the sound just so disappointed that I need to take an extra pedal. VL3X, A/B, FCB1010, RC600 plus now I need to take my Leleh Duo. I have a GR55 as well. That’s 3 midi expression pedals and unless I’m missing something, none of them will control the VL3e. Not the end of the world but they have much more extensive midi control in the VL2. I don’t understand why they didn’t build upon what they already had in terms of midi control. Oh well…. People have mentioned doing it myself through sysex but I know almost nothing about that and I have more than enough things to learn already. It gets overwhelming. Thanks anyway.
I understand why TCE released this looper in the tiny form factor and it’s probably fine for most people. However, I hate double tapping so if TCE released a two button model of this pedal or added a port to add a footswitch to press STOP I would buy it tomorrow. I know that there are other models and brands with two or more buttons they are overkill for my needs.
