You need to go into the OS system settings and adjust the PATH environment variable to include the folder where the ESP-r executables are located. Normally when using the installer this step is not normally required. The entry would likely be C:\ESRU\esp-r\bin -Jon

I’ve been looking at this idea “old balsa/ monokote” gas rc guy. Looking at building again. All the foam stuff is insanely heavy with really poor flight characteristics. But if you mix 3d printed ribs, with old school building techniques it would be easy to get really strong and very light wing structures. I haven’t seen anyone try that yet. They all want the 3d printer to do the whole job. Which I don’t think is realistic. The new electric power systems definitely are good sadly the air frames today are just heavy junk because everyone wants zero build/assembly effort.
@jon.in.glasgow1989
@jon.in.glasgow1989 7 месяцев назад
One of my older videos uses 3D printed ribs with a foam skin that also has a packing tape coating - a hybrid ARMIN approach. What I have not yet done is use the LW-PLA ribs with the foam skin. Should work a treat as long as there is a CF spar (or two) to tie the LW-PLA ribs together. Let us know if you try something like it!

It is saying this because it is expecting to find a folder named 'tmp' where the results file should have been placed. It didn't and thus this rather unhelpful error message. Check where the results file actually is and make sure you provide a path to that. Note the newer version of the tools that I am working on correct some of this.

A few questions came up about the video: "How long did it take to get to Spitsbergen" - we left Rosyth late afternoon on the 19th of July, journeyed along the coast of norway arriving at the North Cape on the 25th and set out late afternoon heading north. We caught sight of Spitsbergen probably around 6am on the 27th. Sailed up to the glaciers of Pyramadin and then back to arrive in Longyearbyen at 15h00. We stayed overnight and departed 17h00 on the 28th. Sailed south and arrived in Sortland 13h00 on the 30th. About accessing rocks. The place abounds with quad bikes and snowmobiles for hire, each of which has a rifle mount. Getting up to the terminal moraine just a hefty walk and since it is outside the town limits it was necessary to have a guide. I have seen ads for cycle touring with guide. They really really do not want to shoot the bears and there is a strict procedure for how to escalate deterrence actions. Interesting story - several places had places to leave your shoes/boots as well as firearms on entry. No loaded guns in town. Our guides had a regime of attaching magazine when we crossed the line but the rifle was bolt action so that it would be unlikely to go off with out a deliberate arming. My recollection is that the last shooting was 18 months ago. What I don't know is how ice locked the place is in the winter. In Greenland most of the villages we visited were frozen in for lots of months and only air travel worked so 'the first boat of the year' was a really big thing.

Hi, your 240deg print is still foaming as it is less than half the weight of regular pla. The hotter you print lw pla, the weaker it is so a happy middle ground needs to be found. At higher temps with higher foaming I have found the parts to become ever more flexible and weaker
@jon.in.glasgow1989
@jon.in.glasgow1989 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the comment. On my Prusa `mini I also have to print PLA at a higher than normal temperature (~+10C) so I think the temperature sensor is slightly inaccurate. That suggests that the 240C for LW-PLA might actually be 230C. I have an IR camera - perhaps worth checking.
@jon.in.glasgow1989
@jon.in.glasgow1989 11 месяцев назад
I did some further testing and found that if I increase the flow rate a bit (from 0.42 to 0.52) and slow the print speed to 30mm/s I get a slightly thicker perimeter with 5 degrees cooler temperature - first layer still 240C, other layers 235C. Next step is to do some test cubes at 235 and 230C to check thickness and stiffness.

Thank you for the great video! How does the process of warranted abstraction in creating a digital twin balance the need for accuracy with the practicality of model complexity? Specifically, how do you decide what aspects of the physical copy machine are essential to include in the digital twin, and what can be left out without significantly impacting the model's performance?
@jon.in.glasgow1989
@jon.in.glasgow1989 Год назад
Thanks for the question. At its current level of complexity and with only a few of these in an office building would have a minimal impact on run time. If the building hosted scores of these for production work then scaling would be an issue - one would likely need to setup lots of different work loads and the host room would certainly grow in complexity (with the shared surfaces) and that could test a solver. The shorter tilmestep is the elephant in the room. It will create larger performance results files as well as longer to run-times. It would be worth testing to see if a 2 or 3 minute tilmestep degrades the deliverables. I would make a differently complex model if it were being made for use by the mfg of the kit who wanted to study heat transfer within the machine. That would be multi-zone and might require an order of magnitude more surfaces as well as that destructive tear-apart and lots more monitoring. And if one were serious about run-time creating an even more abstract variant would be worth trying. If a detailed comfort study was not called for a more abstract DT might be good enough.

That the complexity of the facades needed to be abstracted into 'an average facade build-up' that really was uncomfortable. Initially I created this video to illustrate a number of points during PH workshops. The PH exam included a design task and lots of folk found it really difficult to pull together the information from the workshops and their new skills into a series of sketches that could allow the PHI to judge how well they integrated their new skills into practice. Although the PHI is changing how they are doing the 'design task' in the exam I still think that reviewing a past project and doing a though experiment to see what would be needed to make it into something like a PH is time well spent. Do you agree? Have you done it recently? Were you able to evolve past designs to get better performance - even if you might not choose to label it PH?

I created this video to give other hints as to the challenges of retrofitting older masonry buildings which have faults in their floor structures e.g. sags over the span and noise transmission. Your floor might differ in details and it would be good to hear of others undertaking similar work.

I did some of the work along with a couple of local joiners. Their details might be somewhere in my filing cabinet. Not rocket-science, just lots of attention to detail needed as well as some heavy lifting.

This project has been gestating for several months. Initially it was as background for an IBPSA paper for a conference in Rome in 2018. The limitations of a conference paper combined with the advent of better thermographic cameras got to me to take a new set of measurements. What that showed was a wider range of temperatures in the machine case and thoughts about how one might design the digital twin to deliver that broader range. So the next video is going to spend more time with the methods needed to evolve the model that was created several years ago. It could make a good case study for the design of models which to deliver specific behaviours.

One reason to make the video is that these heritage lines are really suffering from the difficulty in accessing coal. What used to cost £100/ton is now 600. They really need to be running with the carriages closer to full. If seeing this gets you to consider booking then that would be good to know. If you know of other lines that folk should consider that would also be good to share.....

So very sad to hear about this. Had no idea that coal rose by 600% ! That's just crazy. It makes me very afraid for all this kind of heritage...

@@janvanhalteren8120 Some lines have been raising prices quite a bit - especially those in the North of Wales. Others have cut their schedules. Thus the hope that the carriages are fuller so a reasonable balance can be found.

Yes, I chose not to go on those North-of-Wales lines because they were just over the top. It took the fun out of it to have to shell out nearly 130 quid for a pair of tickets.

Wow more than 600 views in a day. It seems to have been found....and yet not a single comment. Is there something different I should be doing to encourage folk to type in a few words?

Really great video Jon. Fascinating stuff. Great to see the evolution of the predefined entities into these 'digital twin' devices. Looking forward to the next video.

I learned a bit while making the video - I am going to evolve that photocopy entity to be even better. And I have some ideas about adding more attributes to the predefined entities to assist with air flow attributes.

Hi John and Brenda! Thoroughly enjoyed going on this walk with you at Mary and Tony's. Amazing how green it was! Is the one before the rain and then after? Thank you!

Yes, the first part of the video was prior to the rain. The 2nd part of the video was several hours after the rain. Glad you like it.
