Just a 50(ish) year old guy talking about life, making videos and trying to be clever.
I'm no expert. I was once a mule driver in the Alpes so I know a thing or two about mules and mountains. For everything else, I'm just making it up as I go along.
I think that oftentimes just sharing our experiences and observation can break down some of the barriers between us and reminds us how common and shared our trials and tribulations may be. And hopefully that can be both interesting and helpful.
That is the goal of this channel, to be both interesting and helpful.
Just the video I was looking for, thank you! I’m about your age and I have worn cheap watches that I haven’t given much thought to my whole life. I’ve been eyeing that Hamilton as a gift to myself. On the other hand (or wrist lol), I like watches with lots of complications so I’ve been looking at some really weird stuff on Amazon.
@@jibbymcbeethi I'm glad the video helped. The Hamilton would be a fabulous first foray in the big boy watches 😄 I don't care much for complications although I have always wanted a power reserve. I think that would be so cool! If your in to weird complications check out the Seiko Alpinist, it's got an interieur rotating bezel compass! (although technically that's not a complication)...
Great review and discussion, excellent editing and lovely personal stories for each watch - fantastic video! This is what watch collecting is all about.
In Toronto canada I buy a super super clone I bring it to a rolex expert he say it was real rolex . Unbelievable. Your super clone look just like mine. You a expert but a regular person like me will never know. Imagine on amzwatch
If nobody can tell the differance than it's basically the same thing. It's like the fake clothes I got in Bangkok. Same factory using same materials, just that after they did the official run they made a bunch more for the black market...
as a young adult the urge to couple, have children, establish who you are as an adult, your place in society, career, lifestyle is a necessary transition into adulthood. coupling, marriage, children, nesting is a huge part of it. by mid-40’s (and older) it’s another transition. more of a reflection of what the person has learned about themselves and the life they wish to live. priorities change, likes & dislike become fine tuned and a deeper acceptance of the adult you have become begins to happen. I think it’s a natural progression into finding your bliss and if being single is blissful, enjoy! ❤
Wow thank you for this thoughtful response, it's right on. I 've heard about people get more comfortable being themselves around 50 and it's so nice that we get that (along with glasses, baldness and our friends getting cancer...). Basically, being single doesn't bother me in the least, so I'm sticking with it
@@awkwardgenius thank you & so glad you’re living your happiness. I’m realizing now that love will find a way when and if I’m ready. it was a struggle at times but I’m content. the one downside, I forget that I can’t talk to myself in public or else I look like a crazy old person! 🤣😁😂 at home no problem👍😂
great video ,great choice of watches and great advice , i have a very similar collection , it led me down the path of fixing and servicing vintage watches and giving them a new life ,,, its so rewarding to give them a new life and a new story
A few people have said they've taken up repairs as a hobby and I didn't even know that was possible. It must be amazing to take some old vintage find and really get into the movement and then be able to get it going again. I am very intrigued...
@@awkwardgenius yes but i find the more i learn the more i spend on tools and equipment it becomes a very expensive hobby like an addiction be warned ,,, thanks for the reply greetings from London UK
appreciated . not really a collector but just bought a few over the years and now looking a bit again ..now older in 60s and need to realize my age. Would agree 100 percent , my favorite two brands are Seiko amd Tissot . Do have a Seiko solar diver that i really like but otherwise yes the normal classic size watches are best . Thinking og a Tissot PRX ... best
Tissot is great value for the money on the Swiss side. I had always kind of ignored Seiko but I've been learning more and more about them and I'm hooked. If I only get one more watch it will be an Alpinist. Or a Kinetic...
I do not really agree with you. I hope its sarcasm, but i just watched one video from you, so im not sure. If you want to tell a story with the focus on any gender related topics, then go for it. You will have your audience. But don't destroy a whole franchise with your bullshit. If you want to adapt that bullshit in starwars you will get massiv backlash. If you are into Star Wars then its not because its diverse. Its because you like Sci-Fi. Its because you like to watch guys fighting with lightsabers and massive space battles. If you redefine a complete franchise with bullshit, then you will maybe gaine a few new watchers, but you will loose the majority of the fans. I watched a video about George R.R. Martin about the Showrunner straying away from the sorce: In this video someone said: If you make a sandwich with only 1% shit in it. You have a shitty sandwich. Thats the Problem with the modern hollywood. Its just made out of remakes or copys of feministic bullshit. Everybody wants to publish his woke agenda and not the Story it would be about.
I have to say I as much as everyone is saying this is destroying the franchise i don't think that's true. I think die hard fans will always come back, they will diss on the ones they don't like because all these years of fandom have given them strong opinions. My video wasn't sarcasm but it was sarcastic, it was about not getting so worked up about a studio's attempt to raise their bottom line by expanding their most popular IP to nes audiences/generations. But I agree, there are alot of shit sandwiches coming out of studios these days... Obi Wan was OK tho.
You obviously felt comfortable enough to purchase your more expensive watches from eBay. How did you ensure that you weren’t getting ripped off with either a counterfeit or a non-functional watch being sold second hand on eBay? What steps did you take to ensure that your purchase was protected?
I bought from guys who relied on Ebay (and a good rating) for their livelihood, that means people who sell alot. The Tissot was full set with a receipt from a store nearby. The vintage Omega actually came with a broken crown, I took it straight to a watchshop, verified it was real and got a quote to fix it, then contacted the vendor who immediately refunded me the cost of the repair. If they rely on Ebay they have to have a spotless reputation, so I rely on that...
@@awkwardgenius Thanks for the response. I’ve been reluctant to make a relatively sizeable purchase of a used watch on EBay because of trepidation about counterfeit, grey market goods not intended for US markets, and/or broken timepieces and no recourse.
@@OlsenTheWonderDog if they have alot of sales and a perfect rating, chances are they take customer service and satisfaction very seriously. Find a good local watch shop and have them verify stuff you can't check yourself.
That's a first. I didn't think I was particularly elloquent but it looks like I may be guilty of inspirational quote mongering 🤣 Thanks for the comment and thanks for following!
Lol yeah I get that. It's all about the learning curve (I also live 40 minutes from Geneva). To make amends I've decided a Seiko Alpinist will be my final/grail watch...
Here's a revised version of your text: "I'm tired of hearing discussions focused solely on race, particularly about white people. It feels discriminatory to constantly talk about anyone's skin color. At the end of the day, we should be focusing on entertainment rather than demographics." (im not white by the way)
I think Disney is focusing on demographics, but not to be inclusive but because they hope it will usher a new generation of paying fans into the Star Wars IP... it's more generational than racial for me, that's why I said maybe this series wasn't made for me/my generation.
you do not get the point. The show is bad bc it is bad written. Bat plot. Bad directing. Has nothing to do with skin color or gender. And i stopped watching after Ep2.
Ok, Let me just stop you right there bubba. You just said that you hadn’t seen the show yet, how are you going to give us your opinion on how well the show is doing if you haven’t seen it? As someone who has seen it, I can promise you this is a dumpster fire please don’t try to kid yourself you’re smarter than that. Just watch it.
The idea was that NOT watching it IS an option, for me but especially for people who seem to really hate it 😁 I also wanted to explore how difficult it is to shift an IP to a new generation when the older fanbase is still so attatched to it. That's pretty much it. I'll dial up my Disney subscription one of these days to Watch Inside Out with my kids, then I too will suffer through this dredge... I heard ep. 4 was better, any truth to that?
@@Leo-Crespi I'll look into it I haven't been paying attention. For now the AI tools on Adobe don't seem that useful but I'm sure that will change fast
I assume this is satire, but it would be funny if there were actual defenses involving things that actually make it good, rather than more satiric lectures on why people shouldn't criticize it. It's too on the nose.
Oh do criticise. Poor writing, story, etc etc. I believe I made the point that a particuliar scene did not seem believable based on my previous conceptions. But I made this video because people are losing their minds over this one. The anger is palpable. Check the comments here or anywhere else, they are agressive, swearing and often attacking everybody involved... that's what people do when they feel threatened, not when they encounter lazy writing on a TV show 🙃
I really appreciate the mindset you’re taking with this, because it’s good to hear differing opinions from the opposite perspective. I don’t think the “straight white men” comment in regards to the demographic this is aimed at holds any water. People aren’t upset with it because of the lack of straight white men, they’re upset with the quality of the story and the ramifications it has. Adding gods to a video game doesn’t change the lore of mythology because it’s not editing the base mythology itself. Having a tv show that directly contradicts the source material in its own universe is much different.
Thanks, I appreciate your comment and I definately get how frustrating it is that they appear to be playing fast and loose with cannon here. Super valid comment. I included the demographic thing because alot of reviews are leaning hard into those aspects in their criticisms...
I see your point but I can't agree with it. It's fine being a niche. In fact it's better. If they wanted to open up to new audiences they should have made something new for that audience. But they can't because they don't have the skill required to do that. The same thing happened with the witcher for example.
Yeah I didn't say they succeeded and I don't mind people saying it's boring and poorly written and generally terrible, it probably is ! I was just intetested in exploring how hard it is (for the studio and the audiences) for an IP to move between generations... how angry everybody is getting is just kind of the ajacent spectacle of hard core fandom.
Wierd youtube algorithm, If you don't like it, it's not for you so "don't" provide opinion. Acolyte is simply an awful story. They should maybe stop trying to do "new" things and go back to the basic: Story
Opinions, yes. It just seems odd that so many 'opinions' include such anger, swearing and attacks on everyone involved. It's a movie, not a sacred text. In my video I concede that this series seems very thin in the story and writing department. My clnclusion? Oh well, better luck next time 😁
What do you mean by "this show isn't for me"? It's star wars, people's favourite classic. They murdered the fundamental ideas of it, which made it so great in 3 episodes. Broke the lore and spit in the fans faces. If this show "isn't for me", then take away star wars logo from it and continue to film this woke bullshit under another brand
I mean if you don't like this one, just take a pass. They'll make more stuff and you'll probably like some of it. I didn't like Solo but I liked Obi Wan. I think that duel with Darth was the light saber battle I've been waiting for since I was a kid...!
Did you fret woke when Carrier Fisher, Billy Dee Williams and Samuel Jackson were cast in Star Wars? Mace Windu was the second most powerful Jedi! Lando was made General and lead the attack on the second Death Star! OMG! How woke was that!
I can't speak to the writing but Star Wars has seen abysmal writing before, and we've suffered through... I heard episode 4 was better, like actually good. What did you think?
@@awkwardgenius I mean rather than just saying that go find some evidence that these target audiences actually like it. There's plenty of proof lots of people don't like it because of the terrible writing.
@@lkn3526 Oh I'm not sayong they liked it, I'm saying that I would assume that there is a target audience out there. Disney most likely did this on purpose to try to grow the audience of their IP to other segments. It is highly likeley that the lackluster writing has turned off many of them as well, but I can't speak to that.
Disney is a mega company that isn't doing this for social good but because it wants to make the IP popular with the newer generations to make it profitable, because the existing fanbase is aging out of (commercial) relevance. It may not work, or maybe their catfishing you. What better way to make an old IP popular with the youngsters than to generate enormous buzz about how old people hate it 😄
What agenda? Did you cry when they made Carrier Fisher in a strong female role? Did you complain when Billy Dee Williams was given the role of a strong black man? Were you mad bruh when he was promoted to General and lead the attack on the second Death Star? Did you b*tch when Sam Jackson was made the second most powerful Jedi? No? Then sit down please.
There is no "this is a bad story, but kids will like it because we do diversity". JarJar Binks at least tried to be "funny", the Acolythe is just bad. How bad? We actually have data on who likes the story about a coven of lesbian witches, having babies, breaking canon, flammable rocks, walking and exposition dumping a lot, change how the force works and use pronouns: 14%. 14% of people like it. The rest of the universe hates it. How-the-fuck is that bringing in a new audience? Leslye Headland is doing to Star Wars what her Ex-boss did to actresses.
14% is the rotten tomatoes score methinks, but online "fan" metrics like these are famously unreliable when a VERY passionate fanbase gets angry and active which is definately happening here. I just try not to get too worked up about this stuff and like I said, if that 14% are young people that were never interested in Star Wars before, great!
@@awkwardgenius I agree with you: the numbers are soft: some are hate watching, some are Disney-fans. Now, if you want to trade less than 14% of Disney+ viewers for all the Star Wars fans the franchise once had, that's cool. Here is where you lose me: "The kids like it" Says who? All I see is some people in the media like it, and those people are pushing an agenda. But way more important: tell me this series made Star Wars better. Rogue one did, Andor did, first 2 seasons of the Mandalorian did, doesnt have to be for everybody. It CANT be about: how can we force people to believe what we want them to believe,.... With all due respect: you went to the dark side on this one. I will not join you, while of course you have the dark Empire of Disney on your side, my rebellion is based on hope. And do me a favor: don't ever insinuate that having fans that care is a bad thing. If someone ripped the Mona Lisa off the wall and took a dump on it: not good thing because she is screaming "girl-power, woke-woke, reeeee" while she is doing it. And no, the kids dont like that either...well 14% might.
Nice, I just had to say something about all the people freaking out about this show on RU-vid! I re-up Disney+ from time to time just for a month so I can binge any Star Wars I missed or want to watch again. Now I know to stick with this one for a few episodes to see where it goes... Thanks for the tip
Man! When Star Wars first came out, I couldn't get enough. Recently my daughter and I watched the Mandalorian. It was ok for awhile, but then got so boring that we couldn't bare it any longer and how weird that you had to go over to the Boba Fet series to figure out what the heck was happening. Kinda felt like a bad mushroom trip. I still love the originals. They never get old. I even like how weird the original Luke Skywalker was and those side buns that Princess Leia sported, oh yeah baby!!
People get very passionnate about Star Wars and I get it, that was years of our childhood. I just tend to focus on the good stuff and try not get too worked up about the stuff I don't like!
@@awkwardgenius exactly. I was more hooked after watching Empire Strikes Back, saw it on a huge movie screen. i was only 3 when the first one came out but i knew the story and how big of a deal it was!
That’s okay. I’ll take his subscription from him. You don’t need him anyways. You earned my subscription and I’m excited to check out all your other videos!
I'm a huge Star Wars fan too but I just don't get too worked up about it, I'll take the stuff I like and leave the rest. Now that there's a new show every 3 months that's easy to do. Some of it is terrible, some of it is great. That Kenobi/Darth saber duel from Obi Wan was i think my favorite of all time !
@@terarjanek Obi Wan was pretty good. I felt like the best part was that duel with Darth. Man that was the fight we were waiting for since episode 4 and what we definately did'nt get in that lava hopping disaster in 3!
@@awkwardgenius I actually like the fight in 3. People say that it is too well choreographed and isn't realistic but in my opinion it just shows how well they know each other
Nice collection and case! I like smal watches and the vintage Omega for $300 soo classy! Big watches isn't good looking. I probably have normal wrist or a bit bigger and the Omega is great, like 100 times better then a fashion watch. Can you wash your hands with it or is it supdrsensetiv. That trainstation watch should be solar radiocontrolled, i know they dont make them like that but they should. If I was a biginner I would try to find a cheep: CASIO Lineage Radio Solar LCW-M600D-1BJF Silver I like multible alarms, solar, radio, timer and saphireglass. Don't have one myself but it a good do it all watch. I like my Applewatch when it works, but a solar digital never runs out of juice!
@@awkwardgenius Eventually it breaks but the benefit is if you leav it in a drawer for a year, you charge it up, you set the timezon and it put the clock on its correct time. Digital watches are very accurate, but over a month it could drift some, and a bit of a hazzle to find a correct watch (mobile) and set it. Insted your solar radiowatch is spott on. They could have analog markers as way. I don't use it that much but it is very nice to have on a digital watch. Harder to charge during night offcourse. But your Omega is very nice, some watches overlap some, but maybe not in function. You have a nice chanel thanks good videos!
Loved that u said the Divers Watch would be suited to a sailor or a fisherman due to the waterproofing. I can tell you as someone who works on a ship and does recreational fishing we would rather not end up needing a waterproof watch. Great for divers though.
Thanks for the comment Duck! Yeah I'm just making this stuff up. I wore my 10 ATM field watch swimming yesterday because I wore it to the pool by mistake. So I guess a dive watch could be useful for forgetful dad's too...
