You've got this Stephan! 😁👍 Just do one section at a time. I would say wait on the inner frame braces until you've added some strength back into the sides. Glad to hear they offer all of the patch panels. Happy wrenching, well in your case, happy welding 👨🏭
This was a great video Stephan!! There is a lot of work there, but just take it one step at a time. Just think what an awesome welder you will be when this project is finished!!! Can't wait to see it in your new shop!
Basically everything on these is structural. :) The cross members will need a good patching or replacement. If you plan to do a restoration then look into a tipper. Will make working on the bottom a lot more fun. I used one on my 64 that was in similar condition to yours. It made all the difference. Have a look at the rotisserie thread in the split window section of thesamba. Check your frame rails where the outriggers joined. Often they can be thin there and require a small part to be replaced. Also check the build thread sticky in the bay window section of thesamba. You are on the right track.
Hi Stan, thank you for the feedback. Yes I figured all those components were structural, that was just me thinking out loud and a bit of wishful thinking lol. I'm a the point that I need to make a decision whether I peel the entire floor or not. Would certainly be easier to address the cross members and top hats. More labour and cost but would be a better / more thorough repair. A rotisserie would be the answer. I will look at the threads you recommended. Thank you !
@tgarage7304Hi Stephan.well first of all here you got your self a great restoration to do.The querrockers & innerrockers crosmembers & outerriggers jackpoints.wow.I would say you are on a right way but I would say for getting a correct overview removw the floor for then you have a better view of what to do,Futher on dont move to much take a part at the time.I started on my VW T3 SC with removing from the rear to the front rebuilding th new parts from the front to the rear.in min opinion and the way I did it that`s the way to do it.But make your one opnion in the way to do so.I am no expert but I ve learnt this over the last 8 years. I will recomment you to search the you tube channels there are several people there who make the VW T1 & VW T2. Hello Hubertus ! I think I agree with you. I did not want to remove the floor at first but I agree that it is the only way to get at all the sections. Especially since I need top to hats and cross members. I was really hoping to save the floor but I think it would be too difficult to do the repairs from underneath. And yes ! Before cutting out sections you can try grinding away the paint with a flap wheel to get a better idea of the condition of the metal. I would avoid cutting out the floor. You can drill out the spot weld in the floor from above if you wanna remove the crossmembers or outriggers. The more you cut the more you have to weld. Welding upside isn’t a big deal. If you really want to take it to the next level you can get a frame those goes around the bus that allows you to tip it on its side. Check out @Vagabonders channel he has some detailed videos on all the areas you need to repair. Doing great so far. I would ask him for advise too. He could give you a better idea than me since he has actually done the work. I’ve never welded in my life so you are one step ahead of me. Oh and if you practice on the out riggers first no one will ever see it 😁
Thank you my friend. Yes I agree with you, I would like to preserve the floor as much as I can. I do watch Vagabonders, that guy is a machine and he made an amazing rotisserie so he can tip the vehicle from side to side. Also his editing skills are amazing ! It's a learning process, I want to have fun with it. I'm sure I will mess up lol
@@pstreetgarage7304 the cool part about messing up on this type of project is that it would still be better than what you have. You could also do it over. You can practice on the parts in the wheel well first before you get to that long panel.
@@pstreetgarage7304 yeah no a few local Vw garages don’t refit these as for one not many got original jack and easier to jack up on beam or bottom engine these rust out as water can easy get in
@@vwcoco Thanks Andy ! This project is a learning curve for me ! I already have the jacking points. Had no idea they could be left off. The bus does have an original jack. But much easier with a floor jack on the frame
Nice Video Stephan! You are going about that 100% the correct way, just bit by bit take your time figure out your moves & it will all come together! Would it be possible (or easier) to completely remove the floor section then you would have nice access to all the frame section? Then once all done repair the Floor Section on a bench them put it back! Only asking I cant really see it as you can! I'm sure you will do a great job!!
Thank you Jason ! This is a steep learning curve. Ideally I would pull all the floor, then I could do a real thorough job of the frame. I'm going a little at a time. Problem is that the floor is 55 yrs old and pretty nice, a shame really to chop it up but I may have to, to get at those rails. Thanks again !!

You can buy complete dog legs and complete floor pans for the cargo area. The lower door track is available at Heritage Parts centre, select the US store. No places carry the door track in Canada unfortunately
Greetings Ginsu Garage... ( all that chopping) How much is a new floor vs patching. I bet that cross rail is structural in a truing and keeping everything square. When i removed the heater channel system fro. My T3 Squareback, i caused my motor to over heat enough to burn the valves, burn the pushrod and the tube rubber seals. When I bought the rebuild kit to go from 1600cc to 1675... the vdub mechanic said to put the heater all back togetter. Because its part of the cooling system. And easier than putting in an electrical heater. Just my experience...
Interesting. Well I haven't lost the tubes yet although if I keep them they will need replacing. Not sure about the floor. Would be much easier to do the whole thing but it's in good shape. It's just getting at the bottom. Way rustier than my Comet was 🤣🤣🤣
