Well, Conservative Evangelicals appear to be fighting amongst themselves once again. So in this episode of Theology Applied, AD Robles and Pastor Joel Webbon present everything you need to know regarding two particularly interesting feuds. One of these disagreements is between Jared Moore and Douglas Wilson on the subject of homosexuality and the doctrine of Concupiscence. The other is between William Wolfe and James Lindsay over the ever-controversial topic of Christian Nationalism. Although James Lindsay is not a Christian, there appears to be a surprising number of Conservative Evangelicals taking his side on this issue. Buckle up. This episode gets spicy.

AD's idea for atheist church brought back memories for me. My father began taking his family to the Ethical Society a few years before he passed away in the late 60's. This was truly an atheist church (that still exists). I was taught evolution in Sunday school (I didn't buy it.) And I saw Gloria Stienem speak there. Praise God that he had other plans for me after a winding road through the New Age movement, I met Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

This was a great discussion, and I’m glad I finally got around to watching it. I have a few thoughts; I think they are in reverse of chronological order, so I hope that’s not confusing. -Least important first, Joel, a misnomer is something that has been miss-named. Its that simple. It does not mean a fluke or anomaly. -To the point you were making about why it isn’t inconsistent to condemn “street epidemiologists” and praise street preachers-I think I see the logical point you were making, but the simpler answer is that it isn’t inconsistent to see them differently because God sees them differently. -Last question comes back to the concupiscence debate. Since you say you line up with Moore, I wonder if you believe that it is possible for a Christian who has repented of homosexual desires to meet that temptation and have victory over it - or is the fact that it is still a temptation, in and of itself, a sin? This is where Moore’s position seems weak to me.

I am still chewing on this. I think this debate hits on a lot of deep theological questions that go beyond the sin of sodomy. Is there a difference between being tempted and sinning? What then does it mean when the Bible says that Jesus was tempted in every way as us but without sin? I'm not poking the bear, I am legitimately chewing on these questions. Thank you for the content you provide. It is a blessing.

Great question, made me look into this because I didn’t know. James 1:14 does use both words tempted and desire. Obviously they are two greek words. What I found was Tempted was meaning test on the outside and desire, of course, dealing inwardly. So on a very basic level for my thinking, temptation is evil happening around us, then how we carrying out from there becomes the sin. If on the internet, a bad image pops up, does someone scroll by it and truly doesn’t think on it or notices and then prays for strength. But someone who purposely looks for things, is already in sin because the unnatural desire was there prior. Hope that helps or makes sense.

Heb. 4:15 means that Jesus was truly tempted yet without sin. He is our sinless truly human High Priest. It does not mean Jesus was tempted with every sin we are tempted with. Also, Jesus was tempted from outside. The Devil used inherently good things to tempt Jesus-food, to be the King of kings, and Angel protection. All of these things were going to be given to Jesus during His ministry or after the cross, given to Him by God the Father. Jesus desired these things from His Father not the Devil. Thus, if you are being tempted with good things offered through evil means, and you 100% reject the evil means, you’ve been tempted like Jesus. But if you are tempted from within, you tempting yourself, as James 1 describes, you’re being tempted like David or Peter, not like Jesus. You’re desiring evil through your flesh, which is inner temptation, the beginning of the lust of the flesh, which is sin. If you repent of the fleshly desire, you have done well, not sinning outwardly, but you’ve still sinned through your flesh and should confess it, and enjoy God’s forgiveness in Christ. We need Jesus and praise God He has been provided.

Hey Joel @Right_Response_Ministries, I appreciate the commentary. Just got done with the Moore/Wilson video. I disagree that Wilson was saying quite what you said of this sort of whittling down from 15 seconds to just 1 second of lust. His point repeated was a scenario where a believer is repeatedly/continuously denying the temptation until removed from the situation. Wilson's point, that I agree with while affirming all the other Reformed doctrines, is that such a believer obeyed Christ and denied the original sin of their flesh, only by the sanctification of the Holy Spirit. I have to affirm the effective grace of the Holy Spirit who allows the born again to not commit sin in any given decision, in spite of our original sin.

Peterson couldn’t hold out in the face of the evidence of EVIL and how it is a perfect mirror of Christianity et al. If Evil doesn’t destroy us - it does - in fact draw us back to God. That is why God allows it. I find that comforting and as it fills me with sorrow and fear in one sense - the new extravagance and seeming power of evil at present proves our faith.

It certainly is strange how two people can view the same events and come out with completely different opinions on the matter. I watched practically everthing there was on this debate between Wilson and Moore, as Wilson is one of my favorite Pastors of all time and Moore's accusations against him seemed pretty serious. I thought that everything Moore brought to the table was either a half-baked concept or flat-out slanderous. I do not think Moore thought through this issue for an extended length of time, and it is very obvious (to me at least) that Wilson has dedicated many hours to this subject and has come to a very deep and concrete understanding to this issue of concupiscence. I do not think that Moore has even wrestled with this idea which Wilson proposes, but has come to the table with a very elementary understanding of homosexuality being sinful, yet fails at getting to the root of this issue which (I believe) was only considered at a surface level understanding. All this is to say that whether you agree with Wilson or Moore on this issue, the way Moore went about in making this debate happen in the first place I believe was incredibly sinful and slanderous. Especially when taking into consideration that he had to dig up an old clip of Wilson during a debate on a secular campus in making the case against him in the first place. I would encourage anyone who hasn't already to watch Wilson's response to these accusations on his channel for understanding exactly what Moore did here. See, he ignored all that WIlson had stated in opposition to homosexual identity (which there is a plethora of content from him on the subject available to the public) and pulled some clips and text out of context to slander his name. I understand Joel, that you are a Wilson fan as well, and yet find yourself siding with Moore on this issue. That is all fine and well, but the very fact that Moore wasn't called out for the way he went about doing this in bearing false witness against a Christian brother shows a serious lack of discernment on your part, I am afraid. Of course, I will continue supporting you however, as this small issue is not something I would consider a terrible grievance, but I would at least encourage you to look further into this whole situation, as I am fully convinced that Moore is in grave, unrepentant sin of this. He could have contacted Wilson to set up a debate with him or a myriad of other possibilities, but instead he sought a chance for a moment of brief fame by slandering this Christian brother's name. And I think it is absolutely embarrassing that solid teachers are considering this a 'good and honest discussion'. Because it was anything but that. Moore needs to repent for the sinful way he went about this whole thing and dragging Wilson's name through the mud like this.

It's like a salad bar apparently, you just pick & choose which laws still apply. My reading & interpretation of scripture leads me to believe that those in Christ are dead to the Law: Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Galatians 2:16-21 Also the entire 15th chapter of the book of Acts.
