2009 Chevy Cobalt lower control arm rear bolt stuck

Method of freeing rear control arm bolt when it s stuck in the bushing sleeve. Does not involve cutting the bolt or the control arm. One thing to note is that the nut for this bolt is captured in the frame so that it can move up and down, but won't spin with the bolt. Freeing the bushing from the bolt will allow the bolt to be removed and replaced using the same nut.

Wow, you have the patience of Job. I've cut away a few times with a Dremel and pounded with a chisel on similar parts so I can appreciate your resolve. Thanks for the best video/ process I've found for the same problem with my 2008 Saturn ION.

I had this same issue today. I simply heated it up with a torch then used the air hammer on it. I did this three times and it came right out. I didn't have time to soak it overnight or anything . But I didn't end up having to use any cutting wheel. I would suggest the heatting and air hammer on the head of bolt and seized sleeve a few times before cutting at it. glad you got it out though!

I retrived one from the salvage yard today. The bolt goes into a square nut on the top which is embedded in the frame. Unfortunately the nut was moving around at the top, so I had to reach it from the engine compartment with a 22 mm wrench. Luckily, my son was with me helping, so he was turning it from the bottom of the car and I was holding over the top. After three hours we were able to get the bolt out.

2008 Saturn Ion, the entire bushing was turning because it had come out of the control arm. My bolt came down about 3/4 inch below the control arm but was fused to the inner spacer. I was able to cut the outer metal rim of the bushing off with a dremel and that gave me access to the top of the rubber bushing that I cut away with a knife until I had about a 1/2 inch of the spacer exposed. I was able to get a pair of locking pliers (vise grip) on this spacer and then the bolt broke free and I was able to get it out.
@jimjones4189
@jimjones4189 Год назад
There's a nut on top that's spinning knucklehead. You got to cut that thin metal cage away that's blocking you from getting to. Once you do you take a pair of vice grips and lock it on there, easy peasy.

@diywithdave3186
@diywithdave3186 4 года назад
I don't think so, the bolt goes inside the control arm bushing. The bushing fits snugly in the frame pocket. The bolt won't come out of the bushing. So the bolt head is the only thing that you can grab on to. If you cut the head off the rest of the bolt is still stuck to the bushing and the bushing is held by the frame pocket. So that would leave you no way to unscrew the bolt from the captured nut inside the frame. What might be quicker is to cut the control arm (if you can get your saw or cut-off wheel in there) to expose the bushing then you might be able to heat is or grab it with vice-grips to try to free it from the bolt. If nothing else it would be a whole lot easier to grind the bushing off it the control arm wasn't in the way. I hope that makes sense.

Is there a nut on the top of that? Or does it just go into the frame? Cause it seems blocked. Bolt is loose but just keeps spinning. I think what is happening in this vid.
@diywithdave3186
@diywithdave3186 3 года назад
There is a "captured" nut that sits in a pocket in the frame. It can move up and down in the pocket but the nut should not spin unless there is damage to the pocket. I didn't have that issue, but others have commented on it.

What did you use to cut the bushing? I remember seeing a dremel tool but, Did u use a cutting disc or a carving type of dremel drill bit? My control arms should be here today or tomorrow! At about 3min & 54 sec, Right after you show your rotory tool, LOOK AT YOUR FUEL & BRAKE LINE'S, There is some debris on them... That can store moisture & cause rust!!! Best to clean that debris out of there & spray them with oil to preserve them! The best way is to mix together a 50/50 mixture of bar & chain oil mixed with diesel fuel & spray the entire underside of your vehicle's & then find a dusty road to encapsulate the oil!

@diywithdave3186 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment. I couldn't get a cutting wheel in there. If I remember it was a Dremel cutting tool with a round end on it. If you look at about the 5 min mark in the video that shows the size of the groove that it cuts. Thanks for the tip about about the rust preventing spray.

@diywithdave3186
@diywithdave3186 3 года назад
If it is spinning and not coming out, something is probably broken. I have not had that issue myself but some other have commented on this video that have had the square nut that is supposed to be captured in a pocket in the car body start spinning. It is also possible that the bolt itself is broken. You might reach out to some of the people who have commented on this channel and see if they have any advice.

I purchased a 9/16ths bolt from lowe's to use & the nut will not tighten up so, I removed the bolt again, added a flat washer to the head of the bolt, pushed the bolt threw the bushing, added a lock washer, then the nut, tried tightening it but, it kept spinning, so, I added a second nut, to double nut it & ensure that the nut does not come off! The original nut would nut tighten up & it worries me! A bit of the worry is mitigated by the second nut but, Its not right & that has me worried!!!! What to do? When i can, I will go to a G.M. Garage & get an original bolt & hardware because, it needs to be torqued down properly!!! I had purchased a dremel 200 & the dremel flex shaft & had planned on using it to cut the bushing but, the shiny metal adaptor would not fit to allow me to join the flex shaft to the dremel to allow me to get in there & cut the bushing plus my grinder did not have enough reach to cut threw the bushing & ended up using a saw zaw to cut the bolt & bushing!

Most automotive bolts are metric now. I got the new bolt from a dealer. That would be your best bet. As long as you can get the old bolt and bushiing out of there and keep the nut that is captured in the body of the car intact, it doesn't matter what method you use to get the bolt/bushing out of there.

So if you cut the top bushing then the bolt will fall out I have the same problem my bolt is spinning
@diywithdave3186
@diywithdave3186 4 года назад
If the bushing is rusted to the bolt and you cut the bushing off it will allow the bolt to come out when you unscrew it. If you try to unscrew the bolt with the bushing stuck to it the bushing pushes the frame pocket down. the problem is that you need to free up the bushing so that the bolt can turn inside it. Does that help?
