i've seen people argue that 'they' used for a single person will be more difficult to understand by foreigners - you know.. the same people who needed to learn that you can use 'you' for both one person and more people. they already know..

@@bathnoodles2753 English is my second language, so I can confirm it's not difficult at all. English is already probably the simplest language in the world, so foreigners find grammar rules easy to follow compared to what we're used to in our native languages. As a native Greek speaker, I can't even begin to explain how complex our verb usage is and in what ways, so a singular "they" isn't enough to confuse me. If anything, it makes it even easier in tenses like present simple because you don't even have to put an "s" at the end of the verb when you're talking in singular third person.

This is funny but, for anyone who doesn't know, Stonewall is the name of a UK LGBTQIA+ charity so when they say they "read it on Stonewall," they mean they read it on the charity's website (I highly doubt they were telling the truth though, they were probably just a TERF hating on Stonewall bc that is something TERFs like to do A LOT). 😅

The whole "I'm not transphobic I just hate trans mascs/men" while being anywhere from casually transphobic to violently transphobic is a style of argument/way I've seen people be for years and years now, and back when, if I posted about it? I'd get attacked even from within the community, telling me I had no right to complain since I had "male privilege", even though I didn't pass, wasn't affirmed by anyone, wasn't getting affirming care, had to girlmode every day of my life with at best, a moments respite when I was home to pin my hair back and wear a mens button up in secret due to how conservative the area I lived in was. Let's just say, I'm a little traumatized from that era, and cis and trans people who are violently transhobic towards trans mascs/men on the basis of "they're man-like therefor evil so it's ok", please get off the internet or educate yourself more before you get more of us k1ll3d (I'm lucky to be alive, let's just say that).

So I need to make some assumptions to make it make sense, and I don't like making assumptions about people. Talking about the they/them rant: besides the fact that the singular they/them *is* commonly used, what I don't understand about that comment was when they wrote "you use it for a singular person and for a group of people, and it's confusing". Like, we already have another pronoun *you/your* which is used both singularly and as a plural. Why are they not proposing to start using again "thee/thou" then?

There is a really really cute picture book about a crayon called RED. It's about a blue crayon in a Red wrapper. They keep trying to do red crayon things -- like draw cherries, stop signs, etc, but keep "messing up." Eventually another crayon comes along and asks for the crayon's help making a sky -- and they're really good at it. Suddenly now that everyone can see what this crayon was meant to do, they start calling it by the appropriate name (Blue) and recognizing it for what it can do -- draw oceans, skies, bluebirds, and so on. In the end, everyone is super happy to meet their new friend Blue and see all the awesome things they can do as Blue.

I have had to point out online that singular they had been a thing since Shakespear to grammar ignorant jerks, since the end of the 90s. Now the past decade they have increased and most of them are transphobic, which is so gross. Like wtf. It used to be easy to just show them dictionary sites and refer them to literal Shakespear, and they would accept that they were wrong, but now they're like "It's a conspiracy! Fake news!" and the mind boggles.

Because it's so consistent, day in and day out, if we /always/ reacted in a fuming way we'd probably not be alive lmao (we being used generally to mean myself and other trans people in this case). Think about how often most people of majority groups will act like someone in a minority is "too angry" for the bare minimum of standing up for themselves or their rights, or also, how often they react with "see! You're all irrational and violent!"/react with violence themselves, we'd lose our jobs, potentially family/friend connections outside our marginalized communities, potentially be targeted or otherwise hurt, being able to be constantly or often angry/fuming in a visible, public and outward way seems to often come from privilege of some form, and often no one is receptive to the anger in any sort of empathetic way unless they already care about the person getting angry.

English is my third language and I not only managed to learn to speak it fluently, but also understood the way 'they' works. A word that doesn't exist in my native language. The whole of Latvian language is gendered. There is no neutral 'they' for my first language. It doesn't exist. And yet I grasp this concept perfectly fine. The level of unintelligence it requires to be confused by 'they' if English is your first language, is really baffling.

Actually most gender critical people are hardcore feminists. I wouldn't say it's a phobia either, as there is no fear involved. They simply believe in biological sex and don't want men dominating their sports, exposing themselves in women's locker rooms, or calling lesbians transphobic (or terfs) for not wanting to date a trans women.

It's so weird how people who complain about singular they don't complain about singular genderless "you" and about the fact that both plural "they" and plural "you" also aren't gendered in English like in some languages, and that "I" isn't gendered in English the way it can be in Japanese. 2:43 Ah yes because everyone decides what their gender is based on the flag they find most attractive, not a deeply felt belief that they cannot really explain but just know....I am 43 and cis, but after seeing that dull gross flag, I'm thinking maybe not....come on people. When cis hetero is considered "normal" of course those considered outside the norm are going to pick an aesthetically pleasing design when they create a flag to be proud of figuring out their identity and as a way to bond and identify others. I am cis and I don't need a flag just like being straight doesn't need a parade, and if you think for one minute that someone would CHOOSE to be trans because of one you should not be writing books.

Just like if we're talking about e.g. penis infections, it's your physical body that matters in deciding if this is something that applies to you, irrelevant of whether you're a cis man or a pre-op trans woman.

Did the they/them grammar police forget their entire English education the second they discovered transgender people or something? It's such a weird thing to complain about, it's from a language perspective entirely free from friction to just naturally extend an existing gender neutral pronoun to also affirm a person's non-binary gender identity. In my native language, Swedish, the nonbinary pronoun("hen") actually IS new. Although it has a history and a bit of back and forth since the 60's(when it was proposed as a pronoun for a non-specific person instead of saying he or she), it wasn't actually officially put into dictionaries until 2015. People like whining about that word, it ranges from anywhere between transphobia and "I'm accepting but I don't like how this word feels in my mouth and it's a chicken in English" lol.
