So... it's all about the Boogeyman? Lame! The Boogeyman better not be in this! Really though it shouldn't have been. Needed more Xena! phelous.com / phelous Originally Released: June 28, 2011
Crazy story. One of my closest childhood friends is the kid from the missing poster who turns into a jump scare. We have never spoken of this movie. Ever.
I actually like the idea of destroying a nightmare entity through destroying the objects that frightened the hero as a child! It's kind of interesting!
+Lulu Calliope Really? It seems kind of lame to me, I mean doesn't smashing your my little pony doll and lamp to get rid of a ghost kind of seem really silly when you say it out loud? (Especially considering how fucking fast he killed the dad, why not just kill this guy?)
+Lulu Calliope I really like the idea as well, but like a lot of things in the movie, I think it could have been done better, like...The fact that all of those things were intact, and in the same place, after 15 years is a little hard to believe. I think it would have made more sense if he was still a kid, or since they were playing with time nonsense anyways, he could have gone 15 years into the past to destroy the objects that created his fear of the boogie man.
+Christopher Jones perhaps if it was more metaphorical for him overcoming his phobias and recovering from the trauma of his father being killed rather than this supernatural child abductor.
here's what really pissed me off. by watching the movie, it appears that it really is the boogeyman. yet in plot synopsis and even in interviews with the filmmakers, they said that it IS in his head. that his father just took off and left and that was his way of dealing with it. the movie itself didn't make sense, and the filmmakers explanations just muddied the waters even worse
the text at the end is something i wonder at the end of nearly every horror movie with a survivor and no corpse of a human killer. How the hell are they going to explain it was actually a demon/now MIA slasher/doll/internet ghost and not them who killed everybody and strategically placed their bodies to be found later
Luckily, I worked at a movie theater when this came out, and didn't pay money. I just loved how noone really talks about the fact that the guy's Dad was 'taken' by the Boogeyman. They all just go brain-dead and go, "...he left..."
I'll give the movie this, it's the best of its own trilogy. Low bar, I know, but... it's technically not nothing? The boogeyman having a form designed to evoke childhood fears was kind of interesting, although it would have been nice had such fears actually been frightening. And it's in some ways directly responsible for creating the sequels, which is a little scary... Yeah, I'm grasping. Still it's a bit fun to see Phelous make such a good case for having the Boogeyman not be real in this one, and then see him sigh at Boogeyman 2's attempt to do just that. Longstanding principle of mine: "there's no premise so terrible it can't be salvaged, and none so good it can't be ruined."
Reminds me of i think it might have been Disney that made a movie where the boogeyman is real but instead of just being a monster it was forgotten imaginary friends that would turn into a boogeyman. Not really sure why it made me think of it lol but i believe it was called 'don't look under the bed' Oh Jude law did really well as pitch though too definitely beat out expectations.
When I was younger, I always got scared in the dark and I feel like a monster is gonna get me while asleep, but today, I’m not afraid of the dark anymore.
I love these movies that end with everything apparently being all right and the supernatural villain defeated...except that people are dead and the survivors can't prove who really killed them, so they're going to be accused of murder and go to jail.
Fun fact: Eric Kripke made this movie, you guys may know him as the creator of Supernatural I think it’s really cool he went on to a much better project.
You can really tell that they were made by the same person: 1. Loved ones are killed by a supernatural entity that preys on children. 2. Girlfriend's name is Jessica. 3. Main character tries to move on and have a normal life but unfortunate news about a parent forces them to get involved again. 4. Supernatural monster makes main character watch as it kills his girlfriend after the main character gets back in the game.
"Yup, sex - that really solves you being a bitch!" Phelous, you slay me. Also, that does seem to be a common solution to couples' fighting in horror movies...
Is it just me or I've actually never found Boogeyman scary, not even as a kid, especially with a name like that... Every time that I hear that word being used seriously, I can't help myself but laugh
I agree with you, the movie would have been better if it was all in his head. Or at least make the scares more subtle, like instead of having jumpscares everywhere and suddenly zooming in and out of things ridiculously, have a slow build-up and never actually show the Boogieman itself. The movie has some very creative ideas and nice, creepy scenes, but the sudden zooming in and out as well as the ridiculousness of the Boogeyman just ruined it.
Batter Sempai If they wanted to go the route of the Boogeyman being real, they should’ve written it like IT with the main characters being children who have to face the monster.
I remember seeing this a while back with my cousins. It wasn't too bad in my opinion. Though it definitely has some eye rolling bits its nowhere near as bad as some other stuff Phelous has had to sit through.
The movie actualy looks pretty interesting. I can see someone who went true that kind of experiance anding up like this. And it feels like it is a combination of the supernatural bogyman(?) and his paranoia that he is battleing. What phelouspropossed would be better but this still looks good.
You know for being flashy annoying flashbacks unnecessary in movies for people with actual memory, I have to admit that those are really needed sometimes, in my experience I observed that stupid people with who I watched some good movies (that obviously don't use this unnecessary flashy flashbacks) can't follow some plot, and get lost in the understanding of what is going on, incredible but it really happens!
12:04 for some reason ''black pete'' is written on the wall, that's a dutch thing. it's a story told to children. similar to elves with santa they deliver presents. what the hell that has to do with anything s beyond me
I guess he was the first person to utilize an open concept bathroom. Also, the opening part with the chair in the middle of the room with a human like shape on it, the little boy, and the closet seems familiar somehow...I feel like I saw something like it in another movie.
That yelling at people only works if: A: it’s the middle of the day and you know they’re home. B: You already rung them up and are arriving. C: You’re in the house yelling across it while they’re there. Or D: A stupid movie cliche where people do actually hide. Again, if they handled it differently, smashing objects would have worked as how like IT, it’s destruction of the trauma and not actually just toys
Nice to see the Boogeyman trilogy of reviews uploaded! After the Pulse reviews I love these! I cannot bileave I used to be scared of this movie but to be fair the website was VERY convincing but nowadays it's just hilarious.
Something something Matt Camden. Scariest thing about this film is the browser game. Seriously, that game used to terrify the shit out of me and my friends. It was listed under the "NB! Adult content" section of our go-to gaming site, 1001spill (1001games), so of course we had to check it out. It was actually this kinda shitty point-and-click game where you had to choose between two doors. Pick the right door and you'll go free, pick the wrong door and there he'll be. I think there was more to it, but we never got past the door section (there were more than one). I dunno, it had creepy music, an eerie atmosphere and we were young and inexperienced.
+KingNazaru well then they shouldn't have hinted that the killer was the main character by having him have those moments of seeming insanity. I'm not saying you're wrong and that the killer SHOULDN'T have been supernatural, I'm saying they should have gone all the way with one idea or the other.
So, about normal room objects that look scary in the dark: i have this tower fan, and i put some stuff on it while i was sorting out my room. I had a plague doctor's mask and a witches hat on there, and since there are 2 lights on the fan when it's on, it looked like some horror creature with glowing eyes when I woke up at night after not thinking about taking the stuff off the fan. Terrifying but hilarious. If only i had put more halloween props next to it, like the scythe...
He was scared of closets before, so now will he be scared of bedsheets? He's going to be sleeping on a mattress with no sheets on the floor in a house with no doors or walls if this keeps up.
I couldn't muster up any fear for this movie when I watched it as a child, so I thought that maybe the themes were just too complex for me to hand at the time. I guess not.
Eh...the "it's all in your head" angle has been done enough that I don't think it would have helped this movie all that much....I still think that if they ditched the HORRIBLE CG effects, and maybe got a better handle on how the teleporting closets work...it would have gone a long way in making this movie better....
I always conflated this with the Michael Keaton horror movie "White Noise" and the tooth fairy spooktacular "Darkness Falls." I've seen all 3 and can't really remember the details of any of them. Also the boogeyman looks like the vampire monsters from the awful "I Am Legend" movie...this thing's even worse than I remember.
