17:14 Isn‘t „He asked“ Simple Imperfect Past while „He was asking“ Progressive Imperfect Past is? Wouldn‘t Perfect Past Tense be „He has asked“?
@CloudCuckooCountry
@CloudCuckooCountry 6 лет назад
Here's an explanation I got from Google just now: _"The past perfect tense relates to an action that was completed at a time relative to another timed event. For example, 'By 2000 they had married.' The imperfect tense, refers to an action that continued for some time. An example might be 'I was living there before 2005.' "_ ("Differences Between Past & Imperfect Tense", Pen & the Pad) So *perfect past tense* would be "He had asked". "He asked" would be *simple past tense.* So I did make a mistake as to the specific categorisation of the examples I used, and that appears to be quite common given how many elements there are to verb tense in English. I called "He asked" perfect because, in the context of the scene, I interpreted the action as completed even though the verb was written in simple tense. So technically the "perfect" label doesn't apply even though it's describing a completed action. The nature of the action doesn't change the tense, so that was an error on my part. However, I believe that I was correct in the rule that _perfect_ refers to *completed actions,* while _imperfect_ refers to *incompleted actions.* I believe that it's still correct to call "He was asking" imperfect tense because I had simply omitted mentioning verb aspect because that wasn't the focus of what I was talking about. Any other confusion might be the consequence of me first being exposed to tense and aspect through Latin classes and confusing a couple of rules in Latin grammar with rules in English grammar.
@Toonl97
@Toonl97 6 лет назад
I definitely agree with you on the difference of complete and incomplete actions and the corresponding tense. The part of your video was just a bit confusing for me as I‘m not a native english speaker and my grammar books explain it the way I put it above (I started thinking it had something to do with the different types of english). Thank you very much for your in-depth answer ^-^

In birds also, unlike mammals, the reproductive burden is distributed more equally between males and females
@dr.c2195
@dr.c2195 Год назад
That does not matter. Females always get preferential treatment. In species where males are stronger females are kept somewhat in check but are still treated with special regard. In species where females are stronger, like spiders and grasshoppers, females outright kill the males while the males line up for it. If men were not smarter and stronger than women than at the best men would commonly be wounded from the abuse of women and at worst women would frequently kill men. We would probably have a society where, for example, married women would common marry another man and then kill their previous man at the wedding.

Quick side note: With the sex and urge, a skilled writer can find a way to have it both ways: Have Hunter add in a line like "Wh--yeah I've fucked plenty of Owls" or "No I'm waiting for the perfect owl" blah blah blah and have Quaver clarify he means the urge It leads to a possible laugh and a quick clarification that's intentional. Alternitevly, have him say "Don't tell me you haven't had the urge yet" and we don't have this scene.

Big thanks to Shammy for lending his sensuous voice to my dumb video series. Check him out: ru-vid.com Decided to try my hand at performance laughter. I think it sounds really cringey. I didn't articulate it well in the video, but my problem with the explicit in-text mention of feminism isn't to do with a personal aversion to the ideology. It's more to do with the similar criticism I made of the inclusion of words such as "progressive", "emancipation", and "chauvinism", all of which feel out-of-place as relatively modern concepts in a setting that focuses on a pre-technology society. That's not to say that in-text examinations of gender and gender politics shouldn't be done, but that it seems a tad silly for a small community of owls to invent feminism before inventing the wheel. Same goes for "The Final Solution" come to think of it. Thanks for watching. Next video should be out in a more timely fashion. (I'm really trying to get these out fast, guys. I'm just the unluckiest RU-vidr in the world.)

3:40 This might mean: *someone familiar is unwelcome when I want to be alone.* The moon and owl are symbolically similar. The tower represents loneliness. And the "ancient solitary reign" and the ivy that grows on the tower suggest that lots of time is involved. Someone who is alone a lot can see meaning in being undisturbed when unhappy.

Animal fables are interesting to read, though this one seems a bit clunky, to say the least. A couple of similar books I've read, 'Tailchaser's Song' by Tad Williams and 'Book of the Dun Cow' by Walter Wangerin, were written better than the one you're reviewing. One reason why is that the authors paid attention to. In 'Tailchaser', Williams created a cat language (called the Higher Singing) and went out of his way to have his characters use this unique vocabulary when addressing each other. Wangerin's 'Dun Cow', which was inspired by the Chanticleer story in Canterbury Tales, is written in a medieval setting with old English often being used, which gives the text some flavor and makes the dialogue more engaging to read, like you're reading an epic poem.

3:26 Huh. I mean, there’s a point there. ‘Keep your studious, grasping hands off the beautiful things we see in the world. Leave them unstudied.’ It’s a very common theme in romantic literature. It’s an alien perspective to a world where everyone can get fat easily because science keeps unlocking new ways to feed ourselves, but back in the Early Modern period, ‘let me enjoy this for it’s own sake’ was a very powerful sentiment.

I'm extremely sensitive to writing style, I'll admit, so a poorly conceived or executed writing style can severely hurt the experience of a novel for me. Admittedly, I didn't continue reading after book 1, so I'm fully willing to accept that it might get better in the subsequent books.

The becomings- and comings-to-be-other, together, and through intermedial theater, force-multiplied by it's indeterminate structural propensities for affective emergences that exeed the artistic designs of the theatric-media processes themselves, stimulate cascades of feedback-loops givings-way to feedforward-flows going elsewhere wonderously achieving transversality over the rainbow of compossibility.

8:47 How modern is it? And why shouldn't it be there? If it's because of when it takes place, I don't think this is on a level where it bears mentioning. It's not like they said "Sup, bro?" If it's just because they're owls, then I'm confused as to why that matters.
