Both sound pretty good, The V30 has a bit more edge, but I like the fuller and more rounded tone of the Green back, after all we can also add more gain and distortion to our sounds
This comparison of the two speakers is the best I've heard. You can clearly hear that the V30 has 'more hair' around the notes and doesn't sound as 'high fidelity', to me, as the G12M. Well done~!
Thanks man, appreciate it! Yeah for sure, I think the V30 sounds more aggressive to my ear, especially with those upper mids. Both sound great though and I'm always happy using either!
The V30 would suit larger venues where it'd sit well in a big mix.. In smaller venues the V30 higher frequencies would need a good EQ pedal to tame it a bit. I personally, I prefer the Greenbacks, they have a better 'all-round' tone. An interesting idea would be either a mix-up of a 2x12 or 4x12 cab of some sort. Anyhow, they both sound good. Great job, Dom!
The Vintage can clearly be heard in places having two threads of sound woven together whereas the Greenback is less complex but I do find its resultant greater focus and directness appealing. That said, which one one prefers for what job is down to taste.
Great comparison. Well done .thinkin boutputtin two v 30s and two green backs in a x pattern in my marshall 412. Love that strat to by the way and your a solid player man sounds great
Great video on the speakers. Your a fantastic player too. Enjoyed this video thank you. I own a Marshall Artist’s 4203 I can’t play much now do to operations on both hands and several finger surgeries. I play for myself it’s been a very big part of my life music 🎶
Great Video - that took some work, I appreciate it! I find the difference mostly noticeable when the crunch starts; the cleans are that different imo. The V30 seems to have more mids is all, I bet small EQ changes could have them sounding the same. Thanks again
Nice job. The difference is very clear here. The greenbacks rule, but for metal (with palm mute), I prefer the V30. They stay more define for that playing style, whereas the greenback kinda break apart in the lows and get a bit muddy. V30 have big lows that stay tight
Thanks for that, I'm still a relative noobie looking at getting my first 2x12 cab and the choice of speakers can be a little overwhelming, although I would be amiss in stating a preference of one over the other, this did blow a few of the cobwebs away.
I prefer the sound of the G12M Greenback here, sounds fuller or something? Saying that, I have a 1x12" speaker cab that came with a G12M stock and I was so tonally unsatisfied with it that I replaced it with a Vintage 30! I don't get it.
That just means that you prefer the Vintage 30 with your amplifier, and prefer the Greenback with the amplifier used in this video. Perhaps your amplifier has less prominent mids, so the Vintage 30 helps bring out some extra clarity and definition to the tone as the Vintage 30 has an upper mid spike. The amp used in this video, the Victory Sheriff 22, is a plexi style amplifier, and so naturally already has strong mids, so it benefits more from the more rounded tone of the Greenback, as opposed to the Vintage 30 accentuating what is already quite a prominent upper mid range. :)
I have a Vintage 30 and a WGS Retro 30 in a cab... years ago I bought a G12M to try to tame the V30's highs. I put it in and immediately thought the G12M was too thin and trebly, but in this video I prefer the G12M. The only logical explanation is that the G12M sounded trebly to me either because it had not been broken in or because I don't play very loud and the speaker needed to be cranked up a bit more (or both). I have the G12M in a box so I'm going to try it again, thanks to this great video. Years ago Mike Soldano told me that the Greenback is his favorite speaker with his amps. And Silver Chair tours (toured?) with a soldano into greenbacks. On a Fender amp people usually go for American sounding speakers (Jensen/JBL etc) instead of British voiced speakers. Perhaps these British voiced speakers are not really a great match for Fenders ( I really have no idea)! The WGS Retro 30 does tame the V30's highs, but the lack of the frequencies it dials out kind of causes it to be "missing that special something"... I does sound great when you don't compare it to the V30, but maybe it would sound better louder.
Great comparison video! It's really refreshing to see a comparison video that isn't noodling through a Metal Zone followed by clean, fret buzzy first position G chords. All this to say, thank you for not sucking. 👌
By itself, I prefer the tone of the Green Back, but If you're playing in a band setting, the Vintage 30, cuts through the mix better. the Vintage has better note separation and definition, and more edge.
Depends on the amp for me. I find the mid spike from the Vintage 30 can be a bit much when paired with an amp that already has a lot of mids, ie Plexi style amps. Overall I prefer the Greenback as I tend to use more classic Plexi style amps, but for use with a higher gain amp such as a 5150 or an ENGL I'd go with the Vintage 30.
Hi, great review. I would prefer a little bit better the greenback. Actually I'm try to decide for my Marshall DSL1HR what speacker to use. In your conparison the cabinet are closed or open back? What you would pick for classic rock as kiss, AC/DC, led Zeppelin etc... ? Thanks
Hi, thanks! I prefer the greenbacks too. I'd definitely recommend the greenback for that kind of music, it's definitely a more classic rock voiced speaker. The cabinet was open back. Cheers!
The V30 definetly stands out if you want mid- to high-gain sounds to remain tight and focussed whereas the Greenback provides body and warmth to otherwise thin and spikey clean and low gain tones. Both sound great in their own way and your demo shows that. Very well done !
if i want to get more brightness from a peavey transtube ss amp should i go fot the v30 then? i have a greenback in my tube laney lt5 and i totally love it but its a different story.
I have a 100w 1973 JMP and use my v30 cab for that and more clean tone . I also have a 77 JMP 50w master volume and it sounds way better with my greenback 4-12 . Best of both worlds for what I like to do
You're a great player. But, I would have used a humbucker for the heavy chordal stuff. I like the greenback otherwise on the lead/melodic (and especially on the diminished) stuff.
Thanks!! It's just something I came up with quickly for the video. A lot of it was improvised. There aren't any tabs. But if you wanted to learn some of the licks or riffs, you can use RU-vid's playback speed feature to slow the video down while maintaining the pitch. Give it a go! Thanks for the kind comments, appreciate it!!
@@DomHawthorn thanks for the quick reply! That´s a great tip, i will try that! Keep up the fantastic music, I love the fact that this came out of your mind in an instant fashion!
They both sound great but even on a phone I still prefer the v30. I'll listen to it later on my computer with good monitors but chances are I'm gonna prefer the v30
