Do YOU Really Have Anxiety?

What we desire in life could give us a window into who we are authentically. For example, we may be considered more authentic when we're with our friends than when we're at work because we're able to act how we'd truly like to act. Therefore, one might see a life of truly going after our desires as "authentic".
However, anxiety often prevents us from going after what we want. Social anxiety may prevent us from forming social relationships that we truly want to form, and general anxiety may stop us from also doing things we want to do. This leads one to wonder whether we should consider our authentic self as having anxiety or an ideal version of ourself without anxiety?
If we consider our authentic self as not having anxiety, then are we currently not living authentically if we do have anxiety? We can never fully rid ourselves of anxiety so can we never truly be authentic? Perhaps we can't obtain true authenticity, but maybe this belief can motivate us to become more authentic regardless.
If we consider our authentic self as having anxiety, I think this could lead to a more accepting mindset. You had no say over this thing and yet it is still a part of who you truly are. Maybe the restraint from going after your desires should actually be seen as authentic. #anxiety #mentalhealth #psychology

I don’t think there is such a thing as an ”authentic self”. Things just are what they are. Just atoms in motion.

Me neither, I'm just assuming one for the sake of the video

I think that nowadays anxiety for missing out on things or not being good enough is vert prevalent. Society forces it upon us. Shedding anxiety and going for a life without is a noble goal. As I am becoming a future therapist I will frequently ask my patients: You have a choice to deal with your problems, live with it and even make it a source of light in your life. Don’t you want that? About authentic self, I thought it existed but I am coming back from that now. You can only be what you are right now. Striving for an authentic self is too hard and anxiety provoking, there is no end goal. You know, when you finally have your hipster Patagonia bodywarmer, you will noticed you are just the same as all others in the climbing gym. A suggestion for a future video: Should we always strive for growth of self and belongings, or should we be satisfied with enough to live a good enough life? One which I am grappling with right now. Maybe bit Thoreaux or Neoliberal inspired

I love that you didn't respond the question but rather posed it and argued about both scenarios.

Anxiety helps me get stuff done sometimes. If I didn't have anxiety I would not be able to force myself to do stuff I hate. The thing is, anxiousness also leads to self harm for me. I used to be alot more anxious a few years ago and if I wasn't perfect in everything I would do things that I cannot say on RU-vid. In receant years I became EXTREMELY chill, you could also call it my biggest charachter flaw. I often don't do things that might help me in the future if they lower my pleasure now. But I cant go back to how I was. In conclusion, I definitily think the answer is somewhere inbetween the 2 extremes.

I do therapy that is DBT informed and we like to be “dialectical”. So anxiety can be both a part of us and our authentic experience AND something external to us if that makes sense. There’s room for both. You can be anxious for lots of situational reasons and there can be a a bio social component as well.

I have lived most of my life in a non-anxious state with occasional episodes of severe anxiety that can last up to several months. However, I see these episodes as just that - episodes - aberrations to be endured and ultimately overcome on my way back to my “authentic” non-anxious life. Knowing how that anxious state feels, however, I can empathize with those who find it to be a more chronic condition.

i like myself better being conscious of my anxieties. it’s a burden a lot of the time but i think it makes me more like able since i consider more aspects of what’s around me. like when i’m with my family and have few anxieties i am kind of annoyed by myself and i’m kind of an asshole. but when i’m considering what people think of me then i prevent myself from doing anything dumb

if there is an authentic self then it would be closer to that, but i think that people are dynamic and a healthy balance is the ideal
