Halloween is not a cult classic. It is very much a mainsteam classic and is well known even outside the genre.

One of the more complex things about Michael Myers, ironically, was his lack of complexity. There was no reason behind his killings, he was a seemingly normal kid with a healthy home-life and loving parents, and he just decided to kill for reasons we'll never understand. And the mystery of Michael and why he kills, and how he chooses his victims adds to the fear factor. The idea that you or someone you love could be randomly targeted without even realizing it, and then be relentlessly stalked and killed in the safety of your own home was even scarier in 1978 than it is now. Michael had no Bates Motel or Sawyer House, where if you stayed away you'd be safe, he came to you, and not even your own home would be a sanctuary from his violence. Carpenter based his idea for Michael off of a real child he saw inside a sanitarium while on a field trip with his college psychology class. He couldn't recall the kids name in the interview where he mentioned this story. However, he remembered the kid's face, how he wore no expression or emotion, he didn't speak or move, he simply sat still and stared at a wall. This behavior made even more disturbing by the fact that the kid was there in the first place because he had murdered several members of his family in their sleep. He was only about 8 years old, and did it for seemingly no reason. The later movies go balls deep into explaining as many details about Michael and why he kills, and while they can be entertaining films, I'm glad new timeline created with the 2018 movie cut the sequels out. And if you choose to watch them, be prepared for a wacky ride. Edit: Also to clarify something, in the first film Michael had no clear motive beyond being "purely and simply evil." It wouldn't be until the first sequel that he would get a motive.

My all time favorite horror movie! My preferred timeline is Halloween '78, Halloween II and Halloween H20 but all are fun in their own ways!

So in Halloween II (1981) there is a twist that explains Michael's connection to Laurie, which I won't spoil. It would basically be the backbone to the franchise until the new trilogy which ignores all the movies except the first film. So with the new continuity Michael was only after Laurie after she dropped the key off. After that Michael just chose Laurie as a target. Edit: I'm a 16 year old Halloween movie buff and am a huge fan of the franchise so I know a good bit of info.

The mask was actually a William Shatner Star Trek mask that they sprayed painted white cut the eye holes wider and messed the hair up. It was literally like a 2 dollar mask.

the reason Michael is interested in Laurie is actually quite thematic when you really read into this film, on a basic level, she just is. they do give an explanation in Halloween 2 but john carpenter only wrote it in because he was up late drinking a 6 pack of beer to finish the script and thought he might just throw it in as a plot twist, he says he still has mixed feelings as to whether it was a good decision.

I saw this film with my sister a week before my 10th birthday in October 2000. My family and I left on a Friday and came back on Sunday. We were in Flagstaff for my sister's ROTC training. We watched this in our hotel room and it scared the hell out of me! I still love it till this day.

Phone booths in the middle of nowhere was actually pretty common back then. People would break down on the side of the road, nobody had cell phones until 1983, so phone booths were the option for that situation.

This is one of the greatest movies ever made. It's in the American congressional film registry. 801 films on that list out of millions made, and it's to preserve the original print of the film as it is deemed culturally, aesthetically important to American pop culture. Part 2 continues on the same night, so you might as well see that one. I love the ending as Carpenter had no plans for a sequel. The bad guy wins when they show loomis looking down and his body is gone. Then they show all the places he's been to with his breathing getting heavier, implying he could be anywhere, everywhere, or nowhere, as carpenter said he wrote him to be the actual boogeyman that you can't kill. He said he is a human, but he has a slight supernatural edge. There maybe no other movie where the soundtrack adds so much. They showed this to studio execs without the soundtrack, and supposedly it was so boring, that the execs were pissed how shitty it was. Then carpenter showed them the movie with the soundtrack, and they loved it.

Just chilling at 11:02 P.M. listening to the wind knock and throw everything on my front and back porch around. Fitting for the Halloween movie and its spooky ambience. 😳

The sound in the car scene with Donald Pleasance and the nurse was bad because of the sound of the rain drops from the rain machine on the body of the car which was stationary in a garage or the like. For parts of the scene with no dialogue, the background noise was replaced by sound effects. For the parts with dialogue they used that track instead of ADRing as it would have been obvious ADR given the size of the shots. Each time someone speaks then, the background noise dips up then down when they're finished talking. Audio-wise it is a big flaw but their budget likely didn't give them any better alternatives.

I love these movies. Michael Meyers is my favorite horror movie killer. But I highly recommend the rob zombie remakes also. They’re so good too.

The crane shot at the beginning, when 6-year-old Michael is unmasked by his father, was supposed to be a freeze-frame before the crane pulls back. So we were NOT supposed to see the mother nonchalantly put her hands in her pockets. It is next to impossible to get any information on this scene, so it's my guess that Carpenter preferred the ambivalence of the 'casual mother' over the 'frozen-in -shock-then-pulled-back' version instead. I personally like the shot that they went with; it really makes you wonder about this seemingly normal middle-class household...

If you watch the 1981 Halloween 2 which is set as a continuation of this same night you'll learn the reason of Micheal's obession with Laurie

But how does he manage to appear, and then suddenly disappear? And then just take 6 shots to the chest and still be able to walk away? How? That’s the mystic about the character that makes him unique. Which is why the rob zombie remake disappointed a lot of people, because they really tried giving Michael a backstory, which humanizes him a lot. The way I would explain it is, Michael is best when He’s presented human but he also has that slight supernatural edge to him at the same time.

The main reason Halloween is so big in America is because we mostly spend all day looking at some pretty bad events happening on the news and when we try to escape it, it finds its way to our phones, so it's just nice to have one day out of the year where we can at least PRETEND to be somewhere else and someone different. A good example of the "somewhere else" is spooky haunted house attractions that pop up that time of year, and the "someone else" obviously means costumes.

I have the same kind of mask. He's breathing like that because he's breathing into a big latex mask. It's basically like cutting a hole into a basketball and putting THAT on his head. I could breathe ever so slightly with mine on and it would just sound worse. New masks are different. Usually these days they're vinyl instead of latex.
