Homophobia is Misogyny, Actually: How Femmephobia Contributes to Conservative LGBTQIA+ Moral Panic

Homophobia and transphobia are on the rise, and behind them is an insidious misogyny that doesn’t like it when women and femme-presenting people step out of line. This video essay examines the ways in which femme-phobia (a fear and hatred of all things feminine) is behind the TERFs, the groomer panic, the homophobia, the transphobia, the backlash against queer art forms like drag, and the moral outrage over LGBTQIA+ visibility and representation.

I had a thought, they see it as a bigger threat that someone in their eyes breaks protocol and in their eyes moves down a step and therefor in their eyes questions the hierarchy itself which in turn puts their position in question, rather than someone who simply moves up. I don't know I am so tired of all the hierarchy games. I have my doubts that no hierarchy is possible or would function, but the one we got is deffo dysfunctional. I personally am in the weird position to be in a upper position, but deeply struggling with hierarchy in general. one of my findings is that people have much less of an issue if you are up or low, but breaking protocol or sending mixed messages or not adhering to hierarchy is viewed as problem much more and the more up someone is perceived who switches the bigger threat is perceived. in the end is ridiculous, still acting like we never left apedom. as nd aro ace I fear that bigger visibility will also lead to bigger conflict, but still I want bigger visibility for people who are aro ace and don't know it to find peace and community.

100%, and I struggle with the same thing sometimes, in terms of visibility vs. safety. But then I think, the more visible and vocal we are, the more normalized it becomes, and the more other people will also feel safe to be seen. Absolutely agree, society never likes it when someone breaks ranks.

@@aroneurodiver for sure. Sometimes marginalized groups will hate and oppress other marginalized groups because by aligning with the dominant group, they can stay closer to power and therefore "safer". Even though this strategy doesn't foster ACTUAL safety in the long run, it just perpetuates oppression. But we see it a lot in immigrant communities who hate other immigrant communities, or the classic trope of women tearing each other down to gain male approval.

Fantastic video! I'd understood queerphobia as a reaction to protect the gender hierarchy, but I hadn't thought of it as the subjugation of women being applied to everyone who doesn't perform the role of a man (including being cis and straight) It sort of crystallizes why most heteronormative societies never bothered to criminalize lesbians. I wonder though if contempt or disgust could be more precise descriptions of the motivation behind femme-phobia than hatred or fear? It seems like most of the conservative types I've interacted with want the best for women and queer folks in the abstract, but get uncomfortable when we express ourselves in ways outside their view of normal. It seems like it's coming from a place of arrogance more than malice, where they think they know what's best for us and honestly believe that women and queer people would be worse of if we had the freedoms we're fighting for. There are certainly people who just hate women, but I think they're in the minority and there's nothing to be gained from engaging with them anyway.

100000%, I definitely think it's the paternalistic attitudes of a lot of conservative men towards women that underlie a lot of queer and femme-phobia. It's the whole "we support you and your lifestyle, just don't shove it in our faces" mentality. It's not malicious or hateful, it's fearful and arrogant.

Actually, homophobia and transphobia are linked with the desire to use men as cannon fodder in the imperialistic wars and women as incubators of cannon fodder and other incubators.
@meghansandor
@meghansandor Месяц назад
Absolutely, have you read "The Patriarchs: The Origins of Inequality" by Angela Saini? She talks about how one of the origins of patriarchy is the need to subjugate young men for the purpose of going to war, and women for the purpose of giving birth to more warriors. The need to control women's bodies through strict gender roles in order to prop up existing socio-economic structures engenders fear and anger when femininity is construed to be "misplaced" or when sexuality is used for non-procreative purposes.
@user-zz8fv8rb3h
@user-zz8fv8rb3h Месяц назад
@@meghansandor the problem is, there is no evidence that gender-balanced or matriarchal government wouldn't do the same. It is not male gender identity what motivates to oppress femininity.
@nuxxy_

got all the buzzwords. sucks that people dont breakdown ideas anymore. at this point on the normal internet i would've expected an achetypal breakdown of concepts like transphobia and a full philosophy but instead we've gone on this covid/trump era fork, where we just use phobia to mean phobia as a circular deffinition when things like resentment and social mirroring are more pertinent.
@user-zz8fv8rb3h

We should not be gender essentialists. Women ≠ Femininity, consequently, Misogyny ≠ Femmephobia.
@Reed5016
@Reed5016 Месяц назад
While that’s true, conservatives and homophobic people don’t usually see it that way. Because femininity is often linked to women in their head. Since femininity is linked to women in their head, when a non-woman (usually an AMAB person) takes on femininity, they treat them negatively. They often s*xualize femininity, and assume it’s a f*tish because women are made to be s*xual objects by patriarchal society.
@nuxxy_

these ideas are not wholesale. you can move one and not effect the others. your reading into the words too much. if this was really the case the republicans in america wouldnt be anti-ivf.
@meghansandor
@meghansandor Месяц назад
Republicans are anti-IVF because they're pro nuclear family. If IVF is on the table, it means that single women and queer women and trans folk can have children, and conservatives only want heterosexual couples to be having children, because that's what aligns with their largely Judeo-Christian worldview.
