I wound't be surprised to find that some of those who found his actions "unforgivable" were looking at it through the lens of how things work in their current lives... instead of considering how things might have to be handled differently because it's an apocalypse. I think it's logic versus emotion.... or maybe logic versus self-image... or perhaps a simple lack of imagination... For example... in the walking dead, the leader of the current town claimed she exiled some people in the past (pre appearance on the show)... I commented, "That's great if you're a california commune in 2003... but in a zombie apocalypse? Probably would have been smarter to just kill them..." To which a friend replied, "That's mean! Why would you kill them just because they don't fit in to the community?" My answer, "Because, zombie apocalypse? What if they survive and decide to return for revenge? They probably already know how to sabotage the defenses..." Maybe i've just seen too many movies where the whole exile approach backfires...

Actually, just recently I found out they both did. It's just hidden. They don't tell you outright "you're a douche" but it's very subtle.

By following rational logic you can extrapolate a lot of things. By the way I'm not saying all this without knowledge, I studied sects, cults religions and magical beliefs at a university level because beliefs interested me in a theoretical sense. From what I see from your comment you only regurgitate what your local priest and indoctrinated family told you about other beliefs. I strongly encourage you to look past it and learn a bit more. Yes some cults are wacky, no doubt about it but the vast majority would be considered really normal.
