In Part 2 of Walking with Confidence and Intention, I will look at how to apply intention to different movements by using the Core Techniques. Please watch Part 1, linked below, before watching Part 2. All of our movements when standing on two feet require continuous coordination of the three elements of our core, including our upper and lower abdominal muscles and the muscles that activate our hip joints. If this coordination was random, it would be difficult to move with fluidity, but it is not random. There are a finite number of specific patterns of core movement that we use to perform most all of our activities. This is one of the foundational principles in Taii Chi. There are 8 fundamental energies, and I believe these relate to patterns of core movement that we learn to use subconsciously. If we can learn to use these patterns consciously, we can improve the way we move and reduce the risk of developing incorrect patterns of movement that cause misalignments in the body and add stress to the joints. In The Walking Code, I define these 8 patterns of movement so they can become conscious. In this video, I will review 3 of the 8 patterns of movement, Push, Reach, and Retreat.

Fantastic! This is what we need. More or these pleeease! I like it because you show us what results we get once we do a certain core pattern. If you do this - you get this,; no matter if it is a correct or incorrect pattern.

Thanks again for extending your examples with Tai Chi terms and movements. Martial or not, it’s still movement on our feet and very helpful. Also, side note, thanks for redacting the audio echo in these indoor recordings.

I am glad you liked it. I don’t think you need a martial component since very few of us are training for MMA. But there are very good movement patterns within Tai Chi and kickboxing that can help people feel the core patternsI am trying to convey.

Don't know whether you've talked about the work of the back in walking. I'm only aware of it because of a minor back pain that I have (walking or not). I get some relief by applying pressure with the back of my wrist against the places that hurt (they're in an inconvenient spot) and noticed how my back is engaged on every step. That's not the part that hurts but it does make me curious.

The back helps stabilize the posture. The erector spinae muscles help keep the spine elongated. These muscles run up and down the sides of the spine. When we elongate the spine (floating up of the head exercise I mention in my Top 10 tip), this is what you are activating. I don't believe there is specific function of the back in walking unless the posture is incorrect. People with an anterior pelvic tile will have over-extension of the back muscles to compensate for the incorrect position. All of the rotation involved in walking is forward, hence coming from the front abdominal muscles and not backward coming from back extension.

@@ToddMartinMD Thank you, Dr. Martin. You are very generous with your videos and your replies. Although my back is much better now thanks to the daily stretches I've been doing I've been curious as heck about this. I would never have noticed if it hadn't been for my discomfort. Kind Regards.
